The 2015 Prime Minister shuffle

You're missing the point, how does that study change Duttons comment?

You mean Dutton's comment about the 'Pacific time' nature of events and meetings otherwise said to be so important?

OTOH: The science is in! Pacific islands emerging and growing, not sinking! All sceptical thought and opinion must be suppressed! The ABC has spoken! Deniers must be hounded down and, if necessary, democracy should be suspended until the deniers are fully put down. Flannery says so!

If he had of left the joke at being about island time, it may have been slightly humorous. But he didn't.

I think you are missing my point as I was replying to this statement by you-
I agree with you on the pursuit of scientific endeavour, pity Dutton didn't by conclusively saying that sea levels are effecting Pacific islands.
To me you are implying that the Pacific Island nations are threatened by inundation in the near future when they are not.Wasn't it forecast by the UN that by 2010 there would be 50000 climate change refugees from the Pacific.Another hypothesis that was wrong.

I'm not implying anything, it was TA's buddy who did.

OK, I'll fold; up goes the white flag from me. Complete capitulation.

Peter Dutton tells a lousy joke.

On such things Prime Ministerial careers turn.

Still no bites from anyone as to the reason for the last 2 actual climate changes (well, 4 actually; cool down then warm up ice age; warm up then cool down Medieval warm period)? I would have thought everybody would be leaping in with ideas, seeing as we've pinned the 'current' one down so exactly  . I think this is relevant to topic as someone up-thread brought up the late PM's comment about Climate Change being 'cough' and he was apparently a laughing stock etc etc .

Those who think we are currently in a climate change crisis, or even reasonably threatened, should be very interested in the reasons put forward by scientists for actual climate change events.

Anyone?

Can we get back to the topic at hand please folks. This is not the climate change thread - although you are welcome to start one.

Turnbull has been sworn in as PM. There was a rumour that Scott Morrison would take the role of treasurer today, but I guess we will have to wait for the end of the week to hear who will make up the cabinet.

Agree that climate change is a repeated pattern; I've looked at the cycles and the effect of sea level changes on barnacles around Australia. But my understanding is that this one is exacerbated by humans (though by what I am unsure, I'm a geneticist after all...). I do know that there are significant shifts in climate happening such that marine species in Australia are being found further south than they've ever been before (ie in Tasmania when Victoria has been the lower limit of their distribution).

So you don't find it odd that a Liberal minister makes a joke where he acknowledges Pacific islands are under sea level rising threat? And that he said it to the PM, who doesn't accept the theory?

10:25pm local. Time to turn in. Will review any proffered ideas for past actual climate change, in the morning (mods permitting :) ; as I mentioned, I think it is relevant to the past PM due to his lovely description of it and the consequent political mouth-foaming but will of course comply if mods disagree!)

Oh, I see that Tony Abbott has done a presser. Gone with good grace, but I expect he'll be subject to the usual personal abuse and denigration from anonymous internet posters. Ho hum.

I thought that had I heard MT say that ministers remain unchanged until the end of the week.

Maybe a "mini-budget" before year's end? One that has some sort of support in order to get passed.

Sorry BC20, I hope we are at least drinking pals :)), but can't let "that marine species in Australia are being found further south than they've ever been before (ie in Tasmania when Victoria has been the lower limit of their distribution" stand without challenge. What time frame are you talking about with "ever"? Climate change is real, its being happening, at various speeds, for billions of years. Human observation is the tiniest, smallest, miniscule fraction of a percentage of the period its been happening and habitats and the rest have been shifting. Just because something is happening in front of your eyes doesn't mean its unprecedented or indeed, unusual. I can point to many rapid/catastrophic events (extinctions) and sudden explosions inn life diversity for marine and terrestrial life in the fossil record (and only one or two were due to meteorites).

And in any case, I love King George Whiting now being able to be caught off the Tassie coast. Like the increased productivity of food crops, there are definite advantages to 'global warming' (except when we have record cold winter this year). Damn.

I really will shut up now.

I had a small nap after lunch and had a weird dream. I had RN on the radio and awoke to hear some policy discussions and fantasied that after 24 hrs of mutual self indulgence and journalistic masturbation that the media were actually talking about policy! Lo and behold it was an interview with Barry Jones on

The Year That Made Me: Barry Jones, 1975 - Sunday Extra - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

I should have realised I was dreaming.

I did later hear Abbotts' farewell speech with the cynical and hypocritical comments about the media floating rumours to destabilise PMs. Sigh...

It seems I have to repeat myself from post #107 ...

It takes days to sort out not only the new Cabinet but also the Outer Ministry, Parliamentary Secretaries, Whips and even Committee Chairs.
This all has to be done without upsetting the balance of numbers from each State and (not that the Libs admit to having them) factions.
Probably Friday before anything comes out.

The vilification and betrayal of Tony Abbott is a national disgrace which shows how diseased and amoral the political process has become. A learned Rhodes Scholar tirelessly committee to his community and who unfailingly showed loyalty, compassion and respect to his colleagues has been treated in the most despicable way.

Thank God I cease being an Australian taxpayer this year.
