The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Interesting seeing the female bias for dose 2 (working age) - more aged care & health care workers?
Also showing the younger age group (under 50) bias for dose 2 - presumably because of Pfizer only needing 3 weeks to complete the program as opposed to the 12 week on AZ.

You must be looking at different data to me, doesn't appear to be speeding up significantly to me. A bump for the Victoria lockdown and has now settled at a lower rate. If the current circumstances cant get the rate up significantly I don't know what will.
Is that right? Over 70 is at 70%. 50 to 70 is a range from in the 30s to high 50s at best.
You must remember, that it is only the six weeks since mid-May that generally 50-70yo have been able to get their first vaccinations.

We are only three weeks into the period from when 1b were offered AZ to their second shot. Let’s give it another few weeks before reviewing the second jab for AZ.

I must be going bonkers - I am sure your comment said something different! Anyway yes I agree I think the vaccination rates are fine for that cohort and will speed up now under 60s can get Pfizer - I know a number of early 50s who just didn’t want AZ.

one slight clarification. 50 to 69 were able to get vaccinated at Respiratory Centres and State hubs from 3 May, although not all state hubs did it. Mr FM and I managed to get vaccinated on 29 April, a few days early by phoning a state clinic which had plenty of free appointments and didn’t see the point in making us wait a week.

Yes my thoughts too. That plus some that there are male dominated industries that have not been in the priority allocations. So these two factors combine.

The female bias also sharply changes at about the age that many stop working.

So overall my guess would be that there would be more women than men in the eligible working age priority groups.

It was 3rd May as announced, but in Melbourne the earliest I could call and get in April was 10th.

It did not really ramp up until 17th and after.

Not surprising that there is a majority of women in the younger ages that have been vaccinated.hospitals have a large majority of women.Nurses, physios, social work,OTs and now with the junior doctors 50% are women.
Also a majority of women in aged care and disability work.
So that makes up the majority of 1a and a lot of 1b in the younger age groups.

There is now a need to take your Medicare card when having the flu vaccination because it is now the best way to have a record of your vaccinations.

Pharmacies being added to NSW Vaccination rollout.

22 pharmacies across regional and rural NSW will begin administering the AstraZeneca vaccines as part of a pilot program from July 19.
Ms Berejiklian said, “We are having conversations about how we can scale up [the pharmac_ rollout] as soon as possible, but obviously we’ve got to discuss issues with consent, and other things [but] we’re really keen to get them on board.”

The more channels and greater geographic spread, the better.

That was announced yesterday

The NSW Pharmacist Vaccination Standards now states: "An authorised pharmacist in NSW may administer the following vaccines to the specified age ranges: [...] COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca (ChAdOx1-S) vaccine: Individuals aged 60 years and over".

A graph of people vaccinated by age group and for both 1st dose only, and for fully vaccinated.

What that graph clearly shows is that about 30% of people still especially vulnerable to Covid 19 have not yet been vaccinated.

However If you look at the graph below (till 1 July 2021) you can see that from those that actually contract Covid 19 that most are from age groups with the lowest vaccination rates to date.

This is why when looking at risk that one needs to not just consider it just on an individual basis, but also very much on risk to whole of community basis.

ie With a younger adults the risk is not just their risk from Covid and the vaccine, it is also the risk of others in the community and especially as they are more likely to feature in transmission chains. So it is not just their risk of hospitalisation and death, it is the risk to everyone. Their parents, grandparents included.

So for example if you can reduce transmission within the younger adult cohort you will reduce hospitalisation and mortalities in all cohorts.

Vaccination programs are a community program.

So in spite of Qld claiming (and using the BBC as proof :) ), that the UK don’t allow AZ for young people, they have the same policy as us.

Professor Anthony Harden deputy Chair of their vaccine Advisory body, said while alternate vaccines were offered for under 40s, they hadn’t prohibited AZ and if someone had a preference for it or there were supply issues, then under 40s could have AZ no problems…..

Wasn’t quite sure where to put this but more information on the concept of vaccine levels and lockdowns/travel restrictions

Well considering the jab is targeted at the alpha variant a lower number of vaccinations would be needed to get herd immunity against that than against the variants.

Edit: oops

So Andrew Barr just tweeted that they had a very peaceful and harmonious cabinet meeting. Let’s hope they can get the rollout on tracks after the hysteria over the last few days :)
