The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Well, there has to be a reason why this school was prioritised and not others

Unfortunately none other than networking/influence/old boy connection I suspect.

This recent article gives some insight to the private school network, funnily enough only mentions one Joey's old boy (ex politician Craig Laundy) and he is a strange choice given it his father Arthur (who went to St Pats at Strathfield) who is actually the mogul, both sons just run a handful of the 25+ pubs that Arthur owns (including the recently covid-famous Crossways).

Based on their own number of 4% indigenous enrolments, only 8/200 Year 12 students should have been currently eligible (as all indigenous Australians over 16 are currently eligible).

Well, there has to be a reason why this school was prioritised and not others. Its a State decision. It does mention indigenous students which flags a risk if they return to remote communities for breaks.

People 16 years and over living in country SA (which is very close to the CBD - 60 kms out?) can get Pfizer and have had access for a few weeks now. Is it possible it was only boarders who got this?

It said 160 students - all of year 12 - definitely more than the boarders. I get vaccinating the indigenous students. I get vaccinating teachers (and no teachers were vaccinated). But the entire class? I understand it is a State decision but it looks pretty bad as currently framed.

I do wonder if permission was given for the indigenous students, but not documented specifically enough so that they sent all students exploiting a loophole? No excuse of course (all except the 8 eligible need to go to back of the queue for their second shot sometime in December).

Some of the teachers would be eligible for a vaccine, as doubtful they are all under 40. When I was at school we had a lot of interaction with Joey's (debates, school dances, drama productions etc) and plenty of the teachers were older than 40, I cant imagine that they are now exclusively recruiting younger teachers. Odd that none of those teachers booked vaccines off their own bat, would appear to be a gap in the reporting.

This infographic shows how we will be transitioning what vaccines may be injected each week for the remainder of 2021.

Notes:
  • Each week is not exact as both supply and demand may not be exact and indeed supply will most likely not be completely even which is what the Federal programs shows bands per each week and not a single number. So the final "as injected" graph will be more up and down.
  • Novavax should also come on stream later this year. It should be ideal for remote locations and can easily be used in all channels including pharamacies. This will make it very suitable for revisiting rural and remote locations where not everyone has yet been vaccinated.
  • The infographic is availability, and not what has been injected. So for example there is a lot of availability for AZ that is not being used.
  • We are only at about 900,000 doses per week injected now. By Oct we need to get this to 2 million doses per week.
  • So not only do we need to swap vaccinators over from AZ to Pfizer/Moderna, but we also need to still boost vaccinations per week by say 250% over what we have achieved over the last few weeks.
    • So adding in extra GP Practices, increasing doses to GPs and adding in Pharmacies and expanding State Hubs are all part of the delivery mix to get us where we need to be.

The infographic I think makes it very clear why GP Practices and GP RC's are starting to be transitioned over to Pfizer, and also why that process has needed to have already begun.

Minister Hunt has also stated “It’s most likely that the pharmacies will do Moderna…. Simply- that’s the initial planning at this stage, but it has exactly the same impact,” Though that planning may well change as to how Moderna is utilised in Australia in 2021. In 202 with Moderna being designated as a booster it will presumably be distributed through all channels.

Take a breather. It got NSW Health’s tick of approval. Not a good look but there are all sorts of queue jumpers in different scenarios. Over 70s getting Pfizer, under 40 getting Pfizer, Olympics participants, vaccine privilege seekers.....all sound remarkably similar lol

Can’t wait for the day that it’s free choice and open to all. Hopefully less than 3 months!

Apparently it was 'an error' that all of year 12 was vaccinated.

Guardian Australia understands a private girls school, with a large number of boarders, has also been given access by NSW Health to the Pfizer vaccine, while most under-40s in Australia are ineligible.

So as I predicted above "The Sydney Local Health District, which is part of NSW Health, said an error had led to the entire year 12 cohort at St Joseph’s being vaccinated, instead of just the Aboriginal students."

What kind of error? They “accidentally” took too many vaccines to the school or something else?

They didnt take anything to the school, the boys were vaccinated at RPA hospital.

The approval given by NSW Health was meant to be for the indigenous students only, but it obviously wasnt specific enough so the school then leveraged the vagueness and sent as many of the Yr12s as they could round up exploiting an unintended loophole.

NSW health need to ensure that they provide more specific approvals, Id suggest for named individuals not cohorts', so this nonsense doesnt continue to happen.

I don't need to be told to "take a breather". I fully understand NSW approved it - but, as you point out, it is not a good look. The justification for queue jumping for a class of 160 - where the teachers did not receive it - does not seem to be there. And they seem to know it - given the "passing the buck" speak when queried about it.

Kind of disgusting on the school's part.

Agreed and unfortunately not unique. Many ineligible have exploited loopholes or lax procedures all over the country.

With no consequences such as being put the the back of the queue for second doses it will continue to happen.

Someone posted that it could have been an error upthread - sorry can’t be bothered retracking but kudos to them.
That was me!

That would just slow the rollout further

Only for the queue jumpers.

Instead of giving those 152 boys who shouldnt have had a first shot a second shot next week, they can give 152 eligible people a first shot earlier - those people could be essential workers (which will protect more people) or 50-59s at much higher risk of adverse covid outcomes.

3/4 of year 12 are boarders at Joey’s and many of those who board are from the Sydney basin.

I guess they have a very proactive team there who asked nicely and were rewarded.

Lol...just saw a tweet where they were referred to as NSW Wealth! 😄

I have been involved in vaccine logistics for years and I don’t know a single GP that doesn’t have a freezer capable of that range.

Plus the requirement for the refrigerated part of the cold chain at present is:

Once thawed, the Comirnaty concentrate vaccine vial must not be re-frozen. A thawed concentrate vial can be stored at 2 to 8°C for up to 1 month (31 days).

See

Management of COVID-19 Pfizer (COMIRNATY™) vaccine from refrigerator to administration

Information current as of: 25 May 2021

So the Cold Chain is not a barrier for Pfizer in GP Practices, GP RCC's or even Pharmacies. (And note Cold Chain refers to the whole process from manufacture to storage, transport , storage, preparation to be dosed and made ready for injections , and not just when the vaccine is at -70degrees).

And GPs just have to update what they have already been doing for a long time for other vaccines. That plus being vaccine ready is an ongoing process. In addition a practice may be increasing their intended vaccinations from previous rates and so they may need to train more staff, and install more purpose-built vaccine refrigerators (PBVRs)
