The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Apparently they have been trying for several weeks at least.

Reading the Daily Mail article it seems that if Republicans were still in the White House the request probably would have already been granted.
Thanks I don’t subscribe to the Australian, so just had the headline. Doesn’t sound like we are having much success. Why hang onto a stockpile that is about to expire?

Interesting development, I suspect in time for Olymoians returning from Quarantine in NSW. But a good sign of the future.

"Vaccinated South Australians stranded in NSW will be allowed to quarantine at home rather than in medi-hotels to slash a backlog of contentious Covid-19 travel exemptions. In what is believed to be an Australian first, SA Health will now consider the coronavirus vaccination status of NSW travellers during compassionate or medical permit risk checks.

The overhaul emerged as Australia’s Covid vaccine rollout chief said incentives were “something we will consider” later this year as a tool to convince more hesitant people to receive jabs."

Probably about to give it to someone much more in need or perhaps about to start their own boosting because the Pfizer effectiveness is so short…

Regardless we have tonnes and tonnes of vaccines and local production facilities to churn out even more of a safe effective vaccine.

If I was the US I wouldn’t give us a single vial. There are countries in far higher need than Australia.

The "magic" future dose allocation method continues. Really if does are just being delivered early from overseas, they just need to be delivered as quickly as possible.

Victoria to receive early Pfizer doses

An additional 149,760 Pfizer doses will be brought forward for Victoria in August – this doses are above what is already allocated to the state in August.
The extra doses will be on their way from August 13.
This is not an increase in overall allocation over the life of the roll out program, however doses will be brought forward from a planned increase in September.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says: “Within a week, tens of thousands of additional Pfizer doses will start rolling into Victoria with more than 149,000 doses to be delivered.

PR waffle.

Some good news though - our Melbourne clinics we supply with are fully booked this weekend with people for both AZ and Pfizer.

It seems the hesitancy is gradually falling away for AZ which is great because even one jab can significantly reduce people’s risk of serious illness and hospitalisation.

Apparently Morrison is trying to talk the US into giving us some of their stockpile of unused vaccines that are about to expire. (Source The Australian - breaking news).
A lot of this story which is the main story on today’s Front Page of the Weekend Australian is now on news.com.au:

A key thing is that a lot of the doses are set to expire and be wasted. It would be much better to let Australia use them rather than have them go to waste.

I agree US should just send instead of waste - a la Israel - but maybe Australia just offer to give a 2 for 1 return or something.

The US has been sending soon to exoire doses to Mexico free. And selling to Canada, we clearly didnt ask early enough. We can afford to pay for them, as cost is less than costs of lockdowns.

It would be much better for some of the US’s closer third world countries to use them rather than Australia who can manufacture our own vaccine. I think it would be a farce if we got any.

Great news out of Victoria today.

Looks like Victoria are going to ignore ATAGI advice and make AZ available for all 18+ via their mass hubs. They already floated this in the SA/VIC outbreak earlier this year.

Announcement is coming in next few days. Good on Sutton (and Chant) for upping the pressure on them. I suspect Sutton is basically saying we are going to do it anyway and I’m giving you a few days to get ahead of it so you don’t look like idiots (in much nicer language).

Wonder when QLD will wake up and smell that Delta is not going away and follow NSW and VIC….

I mentioned last week that they were discussing doing this. Good to see sanity prevail

I pondered if this was happening in the background last week or the week before. The problem really is how close to expiry the vaccines are and how quickly the developing countries could get doses in arms.

I'm not saying we should get them at all - as per the whole year, I think even if we'd got 30 million direct from Pfizer it would've been entirely unethical considering what's going on elsewhere in the world. But if the choice could literally be a trade for later deliveries for Australia and these doses expiring and going in the bin, the best course is obvious.

With a caveat, if the third world countries who need them do not have the infrastructure to get the shots into arms before expiration date, it would be a waste to send them there. It is very complicated I imagine.

I know South Africa could use them. They pinned their hopes on AZ , but then it wasn’t effective against their variant so had to join the queue for Pfizer. Initially their vaccination delivery was a shambles, but I understand it is working better now and a shortage of vaccine is the main problem. Their death rates are quite high, so it would mean more to them than to us.

There been much written/spoken in the media about who is resisting getting vaccinated.

The paragon of vaccination & freedoms, California, is a good example for Australia's vaccine rollout I fear. This is after over USD 100m of prize draws and USD 50 gift cards were given out from late May.

Despite starting close to 3 months ahead of the Australian rollout, & having multiples (on a per capita basis) of vaccines available - they're just above 50% fully vaccinated as of Thursday (US time), low 60s with the 1st dose. Somewhat complicated as some Johnson & Johnson has been used.

California has had multiple media blitzs for 'illegal immigrants' to get vaccinated. In some areas offering

2 Feb 2021 — San Diego County residents can access the COVID-19 vaccine for free regardless of their immigration status, public officials have repeatedly...

If what is oft-hailed as the most 'with it' or progressive US State is having problems getting people to step up for a shot - get the $300 ready!

27 May 2021 — The state will give out $100 million in the form of $50 gift cards to the next 2 million newly-vaccinated Californians, and hold drawings ...

California State data Vaccination progress data

Claiming 63.3% fully vaccinated and 9.7% partially vaccinated.

I guess California has to deal with a segment of undocumented immigrants.

If Australia vaccinates about 65% of the Australian (edit: adult) population, this is about 50% of the whole population (not sure about the 16+ figures).

Our Pm chose the wrong words in saying that it wasn’t a race was making sure that the correct groups got priority first instead of the media going off about lack of supply.

our country also backed the wrong vaccines like betting on the wrong horse.

The media has a lot to answer for by head lining each COVID death and death of someone who died as a result of the AstraZeneca vaccine, that is starting to change, we need smarter media.
