The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Small story on Front Page of Tomorrow's SMH - "One in five health staff unjabbed" - That is a disgrace. Health staff were in the priority groups to be vaccinated at the start of the rollout.
How much of this is by choice?

Healthcare workers have a bit of vaccine hesitancy too.

Pretty low hesitancy in my medical and nursing colleagues. There was a bit in the pregnant/trying group but this seems to have disappeared . Student nurses were struggling to get appointments a couple of months back I know

For my local hospital at St Vincent’s Sydney they have had an onsite healthcare only clinic for several months.

Obviously regional and rural is difficult. But if it comes to a matter of employment I would think most employers would facilitate it.

Just natural steps of progress/progression.

In NSW, it will become mandatory for all healthcare in public and private hospitals by end September (first jab) and end November (second jab/appointment).

It’s got AHPPC attention so in due course it’s probably all around the country.

For once I agree with the AMA who are calling on the Fed Gov to mandate compulsory vaccination for all hospitals, clinics, GP's and all non-medical admin staff, contractors etc etc that support them in every medical facility in the country.

I just cannot believe this hasn't been done yet. Talk about moving in slomo....

Every time I go into my local chemist, the pharmacist asks if I have been vaccinated. It’s good to see him being proactive. (Of course he is disappointed they haven’t been vaccinating since February as they were prepared for.)

Our chemist doesn't because last time I asked them (few weeks ago), they hadn't been done! Older neighbour next door has had Pfizer due to having APS (ATAGI relevant blood clotting condition same as mine) but his wife who was likewise hanging out for Pfizer has given up and will get AZ. Eventually. Suggested that when she decides it will be because Delta is here and there will be a queue.

Of the deaths today, none were vaccinated.

Dan Andrews says there is a target for VIC to reach 70% with a first dose by 23rd September and we may reach that earlier if more people take up AstraZeneca. He is foreshadowing that there will be some further easing of restrictions when that target is reached.

Easing of construction limits when the 70% first dose target is reached is linked to first dose take-up by the workers on the sites as well.

Offering incentives to vaccinate seems to have worked well for NSW so go for it Dan!

Dan Andrews has again recommended people take AZ: "2.6 million doses of AstraZeneca have been administered in our state over the last few months. This is a choice that literally millions of Victorians are making. It is a safe vaccine. It is an effective vaccine. It is the vaccine that is available now, and that means for the vast majority of people it is the best vaccine right now."

Yep will Vic follow NSW in making vaccines look mandatory to get 70% 80% freedoms???? And for how long after that.....

I'm certainly no fan of Dan Andrews (I think he should have been removed long ago), but his messaging to encourage people to take AZ is good. Got to give some credit where credit is due. Trying to look on the positives.

Is this issue solely in the Feds domain? I think it would need states and feds to make it work. Its not like aged care where feds are in control - states run the health system.

Even with the feds in control of aged care - states had to make the rules for the aged care workers - feds just messing it all over the place.

The feds regulate the medical body though.

States will all be on board with anything that means they have to spend less money, of which vaccinated healthcare workers is clearly one such (super easy & obvious) step.

Yes the use of AZ has been quite strong in Vic.

Of the the 4.9 million doses in total, more than half and at least 2.6 million have been AZ.

In Vic of the double dosed, it is half of the 1.87 million that have had AZ. And that is with 12 weeks versus 3 weeks for most for the second dose and with Pfizer having started to be used earlier. So number the AZ double dosed is still going to continue just from those already single dosed with it over the last 3 months.

We have very proudly across our state, we have championed the AstraZeneca vaccine and anyone who suggests otherwise is simply wrong.
The prime minister has on numerous occasions publicly and privately indicated to me that the number of AZ shots we have been able to get in arms is remarkable.
It is amazing. And it sets us in a stronger position.
Across our state, 2.6 million doses of AstraZeneca have been administered.
This is as of yesterday so that number will have grown slightly over the course of 24 hours. As of yesterday 940,000 double dose Victorians with AstraZeneca.
It is safe and it is effective. You need to talk to a health professional before you make the choice that it is the vaccine for you. The best vaccine as a chief health officer tells us is the one you can get today. Go online right now, there are literally thousands of AstraZeneca appointments available for you.

At the Vic Presser today they stated that the Feds have now approved an additional 800 GPs to vaccinate with Pfizer.

The Commonwealth managed GP channel has been very constrained in Victoria to date, so with the expected increase in Pfizer availability from September on that is welcome news.

The State Hubs Have been reported to have more capacity to vaccinate, but that not be enough in themselves for the increases in planned vaccine numbers coming. Plus you want more approved GP and Pharmacies to provide better access for all, and especially some ethnic groups.

Yes, I'm due for my second AZ not long after the Premier expects us to reach 70% with a first dose.
