The DJ Op UP Thread.

Slummed it out in 3C this morning. OOL-MEL. Checked in before I hit Plat so my boarding pass still said Gold. At 6am this morning I couldn't be bothered finding the service desk and asking for a reprint.

Will see how my flight home goes this afternoon.

Have flown Adl/Syd/Adl now 2 times. Bought exit row seats on all 4 flights. No opups as VA SG. Maybe better luck as a VA WP?

Buying an exit row would proabley be the reason why. They wouldn't want to move you since you paid for that product.

I wouldn't even suggest purchasing an exit row. Everytime I've checked in at a desk, they have offered to move me to the exit row.

I don't anyway, Row 3 has just as much legroom and it's quicker getting on and off the aircraft.

Thank. OK will try that as I learn the VA system.

The op-up Gods were smiling on me today.

Went from 3C on a cancelled 737 flight to 2D on what appears to be one of the new 737s with the mini glass/plastic partition (?) between premium economy and economy.

Was given a digiplayer and also a snack and drink. No pies (meat or vegetarian) so chose the Thai salad, which wasn't anything special, and only beer available as well which thankfully was Pure Blonde.

And by the way row 3 looks to have loads of leg room.

P.S Any chance of making this thread a sticky?

3F became 1D tonight as well - 2 from 2 this trip with full PE service, no pies packed though .

Changed to earlier flight Mel - Syd this afternoon and upgraded to 1F from 3A on original flight.

Appears an unwritten benefit is being experienced fairly regularly. I've been upgraded both on-board and at the gate and Markis10 has been upgraded in the lounge...anyone been upgraded at check-in?

I've received both upgrades at OOL and I note Mogul received his at MEL. I've also been on flights where an uprgrade would have been possible, but hasn't happened so at this stage, very much at the discretion of the gate/lounge/FA staff it would seem and perhaps some ports are more likely to offer upgrades over others.

To add my recent experience, had my first ever op-up SYD-HVB on Monday. A lowly Silver (sitting on about 450SC and will be Gold in two weeks) on a Saver fare and was moved to 1A with "Premium Economy" printed on my BP. Got the full PE treatment. I put it down to Economy having been oversold due to school hols.

Return flight yesterday, was in 1C. Didn't get the PE treatment though.

Cheers

The picture is developing.

OpUPs available for silver, gold and platinum,

At the liberty of check-in, lounge, gate and flight staff,

Most definitely a service that may be offered, rather than expected,

May include complementary F&B or may not,

Can happen from any class to any class (ie saver to PE or J).

Op-uped yesterday after requesting to fly ahead on an earlier flight from MEL to SYD. Saver fare to PE. Somewhat confusingly I was handed a flexi meal (cheese and biscuits and a glass of red. Cheddar was surprisingly good and the salsa is great. Crackers a bit grim though) - no idea what's going on there. I am a goldie, and earned it the hard way, for whatever that's worth. Somewhat surprised there was even a seat available for fly ahead, given the disruption yesterday.

That's the key here. People should not expect a free op-upgrade or free meals to be provided on board, else we are probably going to see a lot of people complaining and whinging here.

I received an opup today flying BNE-MEL DJ328.

Before the flight they made announcement they were oversold. They wanted one volunteer to move to a later flight and who would get a refund credit. I was tempted to go for it, but before I even thought about it another guy sprinted up to the counter to claim it.

My fare was a very expensive flexi fare almost as much as a premium economy and I got a status match to platinum. So I thought i might have a fair chance of an upop. A few people had been paged to the gate counter. So I figured there might be a few people being moved about. But no page for me.

Then they made the boarding call. I was second in line for premium boarding. When they went to scan my BP it beeped. The woman said we have moved you forward a row and had a new boarding pass sitting there for me.

I have done probably 80 domestic flights with Qantas this year and not one opup. This is only my second flight with Virgin this year (my third ever) and I got one :)

I know I should keep my expectations low with opups. But it certainly is encouraging me to fly with Virgin a bit more.

On check in, was informed I had been given a shadow: sure enough, had seat 4A with 4B empty, and scored a sandwich.

I saw this post on another thread and thought I might bring the applicable part into this thread as a record. (To read vlados full post, click on the "view post" icon beside his/her name in the quote box.)

Seems if opUPs are not available, a shadow, being the next best thing, is also being offered. Once more, a nice touch rather than a benefit to be demanded. There's been a number of times I thought I may have had an intentional shadow, but it has never been mentioned to me like it was for the OP.

1 for 1 for this newly minted DJ WP.

30/9 OOL-SYD - checked in at the desk and allocated 3A, the agent said the flight was pretty full and she would put my name down for an upgrade. I didn't object.

Called over the PA about 10 mins before boarding, reprinted 2C, sweet.

Will I change my regular travel habits? No. However I'll certainly be flying DJ from now on where I used to fly JQ.

After LTG, that's a whole different story.

Flew MEL>PER Monday morning with a colleague, both Golds on Flexis and he was op-up'd to 2F. Of course it was a refitted aircraft so this was Business with full catering, comfort pack etc. I was very jealous.

It seems to be based purely on luck. I noticed a couple of Platinum bag tags around me in row 5; I would have thought these guys would be first in line. As a Gold I'm happy for that to not be the case however...

I think your right on that note. I have never had an OpUp on any airline anywhere in the world (travel primarily domestic though).

Flew Sydney - Ballina the other week with partner. Seat selection was 3A & 3B. Paged in the lounge and upgraded to 2A & 2C (old configuration) and received full PE service.

Return trip we checked in at Ballina and had again pre-selected same seats as way up. Check in agent informs me that we will be seated in 1A & 1C. New configuration this time with full PE service.

Was pretty happy with getting upgraded twice in a row.

Flights were packed both ways so I put it down to that.

11/09 - I was upgraded at the gate from 5C to 1C with full PE service. Great crew as well!
