i believe on the economy only routes where j class is not offered, they have started re seating golds/plats in the 1st two rows.
i guess for a little bit more comfort etc

Nice surprise.

Isn't VBU the oldest of the 700s? If so, I'm a bit surprised it's been refitted.

Not sure. It's possible I got the rego wrong (but I'm pretty sure it was VBU). I was using my eyes/memory rather than something like expertflyer.
It had the old DJ livery on the outside with a refit interior. As a Silver pleb it was a nice surprise!

Update was dissapointing
tried on checkin syd lax in prem econ
plenty empty seats in business once on the plane which was stupid
As a platinum i expect better,It would have been better for me to fly qtass, and use points to upgrade.
That said prem econ luckly wasnt full, and the service was excellent.
Head waiter came and apologised which was very professional as well.

Why would you expect a j seat just because they are empty? If I expected a j seat, I would pay for it ;)

Looks like it. I did online check in last night for ABX-SYD and was surprised to be given 1A. I took a look at what the situation was to book a seat on that flight now and it said there was only 2 seats available last night, when I looked then it said only 1 seat (this is the virgin website, not expertflyer).

After seeing your comment, I thought I'd punch in ABX-BNE and see what it said (it doesn't list Business as an option if you put in straight ABX-SYD but will with additional legs that do have Business). Still only one seat left, but a message said the ABX-SYD leg would be in economy (this is selecting business as the ticket type), so I tried a few other flights that weren't going to be full and it came up with the same thing, so I guess they just aren't selling Business ABX-SYD anymore. Which is nice for the higher levels, but it did mean Virgin had a product nobody else did (Rexx, Qantas and Brindabella fly from Albury but without any kind of premium seating). That said, I guess they did their sums and found the rare points upgraded person or business paying customer (or as I found a few months ago, person who just sat there and convinced the FA to let them stay) was outweighed by the fact the seats were almost always empty.

Thus I suppose I didn't get an Op Up but instead just a perk of Business class not being sold on the route. Quite a nice perk if it hangs round, might make keeping Gold worth using one of the retain status offers if they have them next year (currently planning on parachuting from Plat to Gold this year, I hope it works that way).

When AA put some F on their little planes (I flew on one or two a year or two as part of my SC chasing and going via Chicago) I did wonder if QF would look at 2-1 seating for a row or two on their Q400s, but I guess the Virgin experiment shows there just isn't any demand on the very short flights and it wastes seats.

There is your problem ... such op-up generally only happen when either the class you are booked in or a lower class is oversold. With empty seats this obviously was not the case.

Why an apology? For no being able to give a 'free' upgrade?

This ↑↑↑↑↑ +1

6 August ADL-SYD Upgraded at lounge to J - reason given cancellation of ADL-BNE flight and moving people. Catering not assured but was provided. J was full.

On Monday I was upgraded to Premium Econcomy on DJ8002 Syd-Akl which was a NZ metal flight in a 777. Funnily enough my colleague who checked in with me has no status and he was upgraded too.

Maybe the CSM didn't appreciate being called 'head waiter'

When you say the virgin J seats, are you referring to domestic J or international J like SYD-LAX?

I also got upgraded at the gate from AUH to Dusseldorf... one happy camper. OT but I prefer the Etihad J seats to the Virgin J seats.

What were you in Dusseldorf for? I was nearly on those flights to head to Caravan Salon...

Last night SYD-MEL. DJ874 (B738) was cancelled and they moved me to DJ880 (E190). Still kept seat 3D, but then a beep at the gate and I thought "oh no". But looked down and saw a BP on the desk that said 2F. She said catering not assured, but I did receive full J service on board. Nice after a long week - but they definitely need the refit in the E190s to happen soon.

Not really a DJ flight, but it is a DJ code share, AKL-SYD on DJ8019/NZ119. Checked in at the Premium Air NZ area. Used the machine (fantastic - can't wait to see more airlines use this technology) but it showed me seated in 37K. Saw that 18A (exit row) was free so I tried to move to that seat but every time I hit ok, it would just move me back to 37K. Feeling a little frustrated, I conceded to the fact that I will be in the 2nd last row of the 767, finished the check in process and out pops a bp with 1E on it :). First time on Air NZ too.

You like a machine that says one thing and does another???????
