Would be good to hear any other VAus experiences, whether a Gold, Silver or Plat...

No op up, but my OH (VA Gold) got a blocked out row of 3 each way MEL-LAX-MEL travelling in Y. Not a bad fallback.

Mine can be found at post #100 in this thread. Only one in about 12 flights over the last year between Mel and lax. Although i have been looked after with a blocked seat next to me, free exit row seats and offers for direct Mel-lax when I have booked via SYD.

Eek...only one of twelve. I'm taking the family to LA next March on PE, and secretly wish for an upgrade. Missus will be Platinum by then as well, but not I know there's not much space up the front of a 777ER

To clarify, six return flights. First 4.5 as silver and most recent 1.5 (including the upgrade) as gold. I hope you have more 'luck' as platinums.
I should add that I have seen a clear trend of the higher my status the more unwritten benefits I have received.

Our family of four got upped from Y to PE on QF93 last year, but I think it was because of a change of aircraft. Only I was Gold QFF.

I bared witness to two people travelling with me receive an upgrade at the gate from Y to J AUH to CDG.

I was travelling with two relos and I got us into the priority boarding lane in AUH with the J and F pax, the bloke queried me trying to board with a Y ticket and I showed him my Plat card and asked if I was doing the right thing (a pleasant way of reminding a staff member of your entitlements) and he hesitated for a moment then agreed. He was distracted by the situation as he tore my ticket as I told him ‘these two people are travelling with me’ to make sure he knew and he promptly scanned their boarding passes, entered something in on the computer, and hand wrote their new seat allocations in J class.

The deep irony is that although it was probably the priority boarding that created the situation, but I, the only one in the group of three with status, missed out on the upgrade. But of course, and I realised this straight away, two free upgrades is a hell of a lot better than none and I wouldn’t dare look this very rare gift horse in the mouth.

Another flight without an op up. But they put me next to a nice young lass (although we're probably the same age). Thanks DJ

None for me with a fair bit of flying but I don't care and I don't think DJ should be doing them as it will further
undermine their problems with J class.

Not an op up but I was able to select my seat for travel BNK -> SYD for a flight in two week's time and I was able to select the front row (for both myself and the other pax on my itinerary who has no status, a nice bonus). The seating config for the first two rows was represented as being three seats either side, exactly the same as the rest of the cabin. This seems to represent the pre PE configuration of aircraft, one I've not seen for years.

I have flown to and from BNK twice before on DJ metal that featured the BSI. This was shortly after J was offically launched and assume it had to do with craft being subbed around as they do not offer any premium cabin tickets at all on the routes flown ex BNK. Will report back if we get lucky and end up again with a craft with the BSI fitted. This would be as unlikely as it is unnecessary on such a short flight.

BNK-SYD seems to be timetabled as a 737-700, which don't have a J interior fitted. If you have a look at the seat map, a 737-700 has ~24 rows, whilst the 737-800 has ~30. Also, the -700 only has one exit row, the -800 has two.

Could also be an ejet that gets subbed closer to the date, however a 737700 is most likely.

I'm quietly hoping this will happen to us when we fly PER-MEL on June 4th, or even when we fly MEL-PER on June 14th. I'm gold, hubby is silver. Sadly I will lose my gold status in December as I don't fly often enough. I must admit, it feels really good to look at the loooong queue and being able to skip through the other lane lol. Our MEL-PER flight is at 1pm so we'll get there early and take advantage of the Lounge pass while we can :)

Funny story a few days ago. I booked a last minute return BNE-SYD economy and was allocated 2C and 5C. When I looked at seat map for outbound flight there was no row 1ABC. Is this an all economy aircraft?

Anyway got to airport Monday night and checked-in for flight with a bag to check-in as well. Was given boarding pass for 2C. Proceeded to the lounge where on looking at my boarding pass the guy said the last flight of the night is pushing to make curfew so I will move you to earlier flight and handed me a boarding pass for 2C on earlier. Moved my luggage across to earlier flight as well which is something Qantas is reluctant to do.

Thought nothing of it as I cannot tell the difference between business class boarding pass and economy boarding pass.

Ended up sitting in business class in one of the new(ish) 737s. Unfortunately though food offering is still ordinary with cheese and crackers or sandwich or wrap from menu. No complaining though as it looked to be a full flight....

Should have booked the 5:30 flight to Perth on the 4th - new A330 per the seating plan.

Do people actually fly QF business? Qantas offering first, Virgin Australia second - even the biscuits are the same...

Mate, I can tell you the craft down BNK->SYD was an all economy old school bird, 3 aside (didn't take notice of what kind of craft it was, my bad) and the one back SYD->BNK was a 737 something that had the business class seats fitted. Sorry, I took notice of what type of 737 it was, but have forgotten :( I was originally allocated 1C but pushed to 3A when we checked in because I was travelling with a zero status co pax and they wanted to seat us together but wouldn't bump the both of us (I guess). No complaints, row 3 is spectacular, but they flew business empty on a flight where you cant even purchase a business fare.

Protecting the product I guess.

At times if op-up'ed into J class or moved from one J flight to the next, you may not be assured of a full catering product (FCNA) as I think catering loadings are organized around 5 hours prior to departure time.
If thats the case then the standard menu items are offered.

All 8 people in business were offered the same choice. And no pie(s) either on the SYD-BNE sectors. :(
