You get points and SCs for the fare booked, not the seat flown, in theory ;).

Please feel free to share alternate theories :) while I'm still absolutely stoked about the upgrade alone, if it had even further perks I would be a very happy camper who would be seriously considering a run at platinum.

Was op'upd on Monday MEL-BNE. An earlier flight was cancelled a couple of days before, end of public holiday weekend etc meant the flight was chockers and oversold.

Entire J cabin was full. No idea what the service was like - I fell asleep soon after boarding and apart from opening my eyes a couple of times slept all the way to BNE.

Was just paged in lounge and they swapped my nice boarding pass from 4C to 2D!

Catering not assured but I think I can have a drink or two! :p

Flew PER-SYD on April 5th and when I checked in online I got an op-up to Business class. Yay! Then had it taken back off me when I got to the Lounge. Boo! :(
Oh well, easy come, easy go I suppose. The flight was very full. One of the AFL teams was on board.

Has anyone aver had an Op Up on a V-Australia to LAX? I'm thinking of booking a VA PE flight for the family. I had an op up on QF93 with the whole family. Curious if it could happen with Virgin.

They use to be quiet common, haven't heard anything in the past year.

Had a near op-up, ended with an op-down yesterday.

Flying BNE-ADL yesterday, original equipment 737-700, chose 2C a week or so ago.

Went to check in on Sunday - equipment swap, 737-800, now in business class!

Go to board, sorry sir, here is your new seat - 9D (with the great unwashed - literally - someone nearby hadn't bathed for a while) - the plane had been swapped to an E190.

Standing in the taxi queue I chatted to the guy next to me - he had flown jetstar at roughly the same time, and the person sitting next to him had been moved by Virgin onto the JQ flight, so it could have been worse.

Given that there was no business class on the original flight, I wonder how they decided who to leave in the 4 E190 business class seats - just the window seats I guess. Might have to change my seating preferences.

Ha! The same thing is happening to me at the moment, selected 1C on a 700 and two days ago it became an 800 so I'm still sitting in 1C.... Wonder if I should move to row 3 or take the risk?

I'd aim for a window seat that will definitely exist across all layouts - safest being 2A then 2F, as sometimes row 1 goes MIA - though I guess with an op-up you might not be able to change within the business cabin. I was unlucky with the downgrade to the Embraer, as the last thing DJ would want to do is to put pax on Jetstar. So I guess the fuller the plane, the less the chance of a change.

I'd take the risk. But I have now changed my seating preference to window...

With the half price points upgrade to Business from Flexi I can't seem to change the pre-selected seats in J, is this the case as per an op-up?

I scored one last Friday MEL-BNE! This has happened several times now and its always a great surprise.

I had the same problem danoleary55 - but called Virgin and they moved me no problem.

It has worked for me before using half-points upgrade, but this time it didn't, not sure the reasons...

Thanks WPHT, I figured I could that, I am thinking they probably offer paid J priority over upgraded.

That really pisses me off. I got a coughpy op-down. Loyalty pfft. Haha

Its been one of those days... I'll whine if I want to!!!

I flew VA BNE-LAX-BNE in October on a discounted Y fare and was upgraded on both flights.

BNE-LAX the check-in lady gave me an exit row for free, then upon taking my seat, before take-off the flight manager approached me and asked if i'd like to sit in PE because i'm a platinum member. And I was swiftly moved before take off which was a pleasant surprise and I had the row to myself.

PE was only 30% full, didn't see what the J load was. But i'm sure this was just a nice gesture rather than an op-up.

LAX-BNE it was obvious the flight was oversold at check-in as they had a sign up offering accomodation etc to anyone willing to take a future flight.

Again flying on a discounted Y fare, but this time I was gate upgraded to J.

Every other seat in J and W were taken so it was definately an op-up.

I was travelling by myself though so I don't know how good your chances would be as a family travelling together.

But as always, fingers crossed!

Since then i've flown a number of times domestically and to NAN with no op-ups at all.

Hope this helps.

Interesting onezero.

Would be good to hear any other VAus experiences, whether a Gold, Silver or Plat...
Mine can be found at post #100 in this thread. Only one in about 12 flights over the last year between Mel and lax. Although i have been looked after with a blocked seat next to me, free exit row seats and offers for direct Mel-lax when I have booked via SYD.
