I noticed a much greater police presence around today, usually around here you hardly see the Old Bill unless they're passing through to the next town over.

Day nine: 50th birthday came and went. And it was a lovely day. A couple of unexpected gifts arrived and our friends dropped around with a cake and present for me because they'd guessed I wouldn't have one. I was actually gearing up to ring a colleague at work to ask her to pick one up for me and drop it around because she loves close by when this lovely surprise happened. We chatted briefly through the front fly screen, observing social distancing and then I had a little cry at the kindness of people. At dinner time we opened a bottle of Perrier Jouet I'd bought (thank you Uncle Dan!) for the occasion and Skyped with a few people. A good day.

Since then, I have emptied the spare fridge and been basically using it to manage the (slight) overabundance of food that MrSuze panic bought online when we got home and that arrived on Monday. I have made soups, and a casserole is in the offing today. Also, I made two loaves of sourdough white bread to supplement the brown bread we have and learnt how to make sourdough hot cross buns (this was a surprisingly easy thing to do and I will do it again soon!). Leftover sourdough starter will be used today to make crackers for cheese (you have to feed it up to use it and this creates a lot of waste, which people have learnt not to waste!). Weeding has been done, but the darn green bin is chokkers and I need it emptied before I continue with that endeavour. I have had two phone consults with medical professionals and one with work as I am technically still on annual leave.

Basically, as I am well, I'm getting a pooload of stuff done. Hubby and I have been talking about maybe tackling the cracking of the walls of the house (it's plaster and lathe, and basically every wall in the house moves when the weather changes - we HOPE the house isn't actually falling down very slowly, but it is 93 years old). The only downer is the inability to leave to go to Bunnings, pick up our post and get a walk in. Otherwise, I've started to enjoy it. :)

Glad your birthday wasn't too bad. My brother dropped off some sourdough starter yesterday so interested in your recipe for cheese crackers

Is that to go with the one for Irish Brown Bread? :D

He gave me a kg of white flour but still no brown flour. He does a lot of bread baking so he's ordered me 5kg of brown flour but not sure when that will arrive. I think I'd like to make hot cross buns. I had some over ripe bananas so made 3 dozen biscuits yesterday - luckily I live behind a business so I kept a few and gave the rest to the staff - I think houses for sale are going to be as rare as hen's teeth so guess I'll be renting here for a while so like to keep them on side.

The thing is, I am pretty much in self isolation now and I have no reason to be other than avoiding contact. I am ordering everything online. This is the new order once you lot are out on parole!
I've 'been out' since Tuesday.

A few radom thoughts ...

I did need to go into work to pick up/drop off a few essential things, forward my 'phone etc. So on Tuesday I used public transport for the commute without touching a single door or handrail on the trains in both direction. It was like my Thailand/Singapore travels earlier this month (without Flounges).

Work was like a ghost town with less than a dozen occupying an area of 200 desks.

It'll be my last time there for what may be months as we are under direction to work from home until other advice is received.

Had a meeting using video conferencing this morning - Glad I got the NBN in 6 months ago; others were struggling.

Now I have more freedom, I have been undertaking a 2km walk to and along the beach just to keep the cobwebs at bay.

Finally found some no sugar tonic water at the local Aldi - 6¢ per bottle cheaper then Woolies.

Its a truly weird feeling. Our EA is now set up in her home office, works for her as she has a four year old that was always getting sick at child care. As she left she closed the door and said - See you in 6 months time! Truly unimaginable. Husband will likely close his door Friday. He has been busy transferring our method of work to full on workshops to all online offerings. Huge business change for us. No more travel involved for him.

Like Pushka, we are self isolating for defensive rather than "official" reasons. Took MrsOatek to her school to pick up material so she can work from home over the next few weeks up to the school holidays. A High School with over 500 students had just 5 there today.

The scarcity of hand washing liquid has been the greatest challenge, as we had let supplies of so much run down ahead of our (now aborted) departure to UK. The only thing I could get after trying 4 supermarkets locally in the last week was a large pump bottle of body wash, which the experts seem to suggest is fine.

Trying to make sure from here on we don't go out more than once a week, and less if we can get some home deliveries happening.

Today was a new low - for my temperature.

I've been measuring it daily, to get a 'baseline' in case it starts rising. Under-the-tongue, it has varied between 36.4 and 36.8. Just now (before lunch), 35.9, with a repeat of 36.0 and 15 mins later, 35.8!

I know it varies though the day, but that surprises me. Its a wonderful warm sunny day, too!

Day 7. Procrastination has taken over. Still trying to decide how to fill my time, and that's taking up all my time.

Decided to while away a few hours stewing over how long it's taking QF to process the refund/voucher from my interrupted DONE4/ Can't do anything on the insurance front until I know.

Getting plenty of emails from companies explaining how they are dealing with the crisis. No emails from anyone who owes me money.

...People will still fly and travel again eventually.

It'll be interesting to see if some - not all - businessmen switch to video conferencing and travel on fewer flights.

Its rise has been spruiked before, but hasn't really occurred to the extent hoped for.

My guess is it may grow, but the 'personal touch' will still be important (once we're allowed to again shake hands.)

My accountant rang today and thanked me for paying his bill as it helped pay for the staff! :(

I think its the manual scrubbing of hands which helps too when desperate.

I can remember an awful lot of budget crackdowns at my former employer where they were moving, amid fanfare, to a videoconferencing model. It never persisted...

cheers skip

Is there a recipe section on AFF ?

sharing is caring.. That Irish Soda bread sounds interesting.

Day 11. Predicting a general lock down starting immediately after day 14, because that would be just my luck.

Old Mr Pineapple is tinkering with his skype; received a connection request from yet another new account, but no skype call yet.

Did anyone else hear the ABC's Dr Norman Swan's 'Corona Cast', where he dealt with exercise? Stated a couple of times that if you are in self isolation, you can't leave the house/apartment - ie not outside.
I have a brochure (souvenir of SYD AQIS) that says backyard OK too. I am mowing parts of the yard that haven't seen a mower in years. Mrs Pineapple happy.

I think the other issue is that in future countries will be much more trigger happy on closing airports or implementing travel bans.

Which probably increases risk to insurers and airlines, which will have an impact on the prices we need to pay in the future

We haven't seen our grandbaby in five weeks 😔
Husband saw son at safe distance to swop over cars . Husband said he wiped down so much of the car before he got in
I am finding some days are fine just puddling along. Other days are a real struggle to deal with
I am a really good contender for wining slothing of the year but ....this is much harder than I anticipated I have to say
I have streaming, loads of books , the net , friends online (friends who are planning holidays lol )
However some days are really rugged
