The Operational Upgrade Thread

Received another upgrade at the gate from economy to business class BNE-SYD on Friday 25 November. It was a lunch time flight so it was a good flight to be upgraded as I generally do not travel before 4:00pm. Flight looked to be extremely full with 1 vacant seat at the most in economy.

Much better experience from the crew than the previous op-up a month ago....

A few days ago we flew QF320 (operated by BA15) SIN-SYD and we were op-upped from Y to Y+

This result was not as good as our same flight a year ago where we were op-upped Y to J, but I'll take the Y+ for the team ;)

I thought it was odd when I've got the op-up from the codeshare, but it seems that they may actually be targeted? Almost like... they want us to use the BA code next time...

Last year my BA flight had an op-up at check-in: Y to Y+, which I was more than happy with. At the gate, was opped up again to J. My eyes just about fell out of my head!

I'm happy to fly BA - pity their aircraft are looking so tired, and their baggage policy - 1 bag only - can be a real pain. . . .

I was booked as QF320. Lucky I booked that as I get the 2x ffp 91st b'day promo :)

Not everything is old. Flew New First on BA16 (SYD-SIN) about a week ago. Cabin is quite nice and new :) Though I don't think the seats are anything fantastic

I can only dream of flying F. . . . . will be happy when they upgrade Y - tired of the seat arms (wherever they might be located) being busted and gaffer tape holding it together. (Last time it was Fragile Tape - hilarious, but annoying nonetheless.)

I'm looking to try the BA's New F 'one day'. It will probably be called Old F by then!!!

This thread is for everyone's op-up experiences on any airline whether domestic or international as all of it is relevant to those on AFF.

Here's one for those who went for the Flying Blue status match earlier in the year .. as a Flying Blue Gold got my first op-up on KLM, DPS-SIN the other day. :D Only my second KL flight too, my first was SIN-DPS a few days earlier.

Was able to select my usual Y seat on QF 127 (40G, baulkhead aisle in the 'mini cabin' next to the crew rest area).

Was almost disappointed this morning when I checked in to find I had been upgraded to 35G in Y+ :D.

Although currently sitting in the QF Flounge and the flight is still delayed..... :(

I received an opup (although at F check in the agent said 'regraded' which sounded more sophisticated) last Friday flying QF MEL-AKL. Y looked totally full with what looked like a Chinese tour party taking up over half of Y. I think there were another two passengers who also received opups.

First ever domestic upgrade last Thursday, Mel/Syd on the 645 am flight. After 126 domestic qf flights I finally landed one!

Red e-deal too!

I lose wp status at the end of the month, so glad I at least got one domestic upgrade :)

I wondered when this thread was going to spring to life again. I imagine there might be a few more posts in the near future particularly for WP & SG's.

They can have them.

I'm not flying again until mid Jan, and am not bothered at all :D

Perhaps you are right - scored my first ever op-up on QF456 MEL-SYD today :D

Bit of a weird one too, as the flight was nowhere near full - 737 with 5 spare seats in J and plenty of spare seats in Y (20% of cabin?). Right before takeoff ExpertFlyer was showing:

Code:
J5 C5 D5 I4 U0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0 G0 X0 E8

So, not sure why I scored the op-up... something was definitely screwy with the booking right from the start though, which I'll explain as I'm curious if anyone can shed some light on what might've happened:

Initial booking was a Y Classic Award made a couple of weeks ago. Immediately after booking I tried to select a seat online, but was only shown the back half of the plane as being available - what'd you see with no status. Called up the helpdesk, who told me the "note on my booking" to signify I was WP was missing, which he fixed. Also put me in 13A (exit row) at the same time. After that point "Manage Booking" on the QF website showed me as being in 13A, but I couldn't change the seat - clicking "Select Seat" gave an error about not being able to select a seat online, and just offered a window/aisle preference (which I cancelled out of, leaving myself in 13A).

Then this morning rolled around and I thought I'd check the seat map on EF. It looked like 4K was available so I rang the helpdesk again to ask them to move me there, to be told they couldn't do it because it was less than T-24 and was also given the suggestion of trying to check-in online and change my seat at the same time. So, I dutifully tried checking in online and this time I could select a seat - except the "current seat" was listed as 3D despite the fact it was showing me the seatmap for the Y cabin.

Went back to double-check - "Manage Booking" still showed Economy & 13A, Online Checkin seat selection page showed current seat as 3D but displayed the Y seatmap. Cancelled out again and called the helpdesk again to try and clarify what was going on (I'm a curious sort). The CSR told me the segment looked like it was in Y to him but "maybe they had made a change at the airport" (bear in mind it was still about 8 hours before the flight). Gave up trying to figure it out at this point - just went to the airport and checked in at the service desk, where they handed me a J BP seated in 3D. No mention of being given an op-up at any point - not on the phone, and not by the person who checked me in.

Weird, huh? Any ideas on what happened (so I can try to make it happen again ;-))?

If the upgrade is done in Altea (checkin) then QF reservations won't be able to see you're in J as the flight would still show you booked in the original class/fare bucket eg V class so not really much point in calling res.

This latest promo is damage control, I mean a marketing initiative, so no requirement for a flight to be overbooked to justify the upgrade.

Ahhh, that explains it. Thanks serfy - too many threads on here to keep up-to-date with all of them :-)

Wonder if I'll get the same treatment coming back on Saturday? Decent chance if it's determined by loading in J - plane is already pretty full in Y but empty in J.

I must say, a very good "thank-you" from QF - now I just wish I had been flying MEL-PER or somesuch instead of MEL-SYD. Or is that greedy? :-) It also seems a little strange that they don't tell you what's happening though - I can understand why they don't want to "broadcast" the special op-ups, but they should tell those selected at some point otherwise they won't get many brownie points out of it! I certainly wouldn't have known the reason without this forum, and the fact I bothered to post about it.

EDIT: Reading further through the linked thread I see that the "thank-you" op-ups are only within limited hours on M-F between SYD and MEL, so no return op-up for me. Oh well :-)

SQ227 SIN - ADL

Received a half upgrade (no complaints though) ???

J seat with Y meals for our group of 3. Also quite a few others in this same situation too.

QF785 SYD-ADL

My extended family was flying as a group of 9.

3 of us got upgraded Y - J due to a problem with our seats.

Thanks QF for the Xmas present ;)
