The Operational Upgrade Thread

Deep Discount. O.

For an SG (unless your status level has changed since putting it on your profile), that's awesome. Which seat/s did you have allocated? The odds of a fewer number of higher status pax in higher level Y fare buckets than the number of oversold Y tickets sounds uncommon, unless there was another reason for it..

Not just me. I had an NB friend with me both legs.

Leg 1: 40B&C --> 36F&G
Leg 2: 40A&B --> 37F&G

Discount Economy to Business

Ok, so it's a short flight (3 hours) but I was still super stoked to get upgraded for the first time at the gate - especially since I'm only Qantas Silver and it was a ridiculously early flight. I'm not entirely sure why I was op-ed up because economy was not chockers (although it was quite full). Neither was business because I had two seats to myself.

I may have to think about flying LAN more often when hopping the ditch :)

Has anyone been successful with an Upgrade, whilst having a pre-selected (purchased) seat or does a pre-purchased seat rule you out of an upgrade? (I am QP-NB, used to be QP-PS).

Before anyone asks yes I have had an upgrade as a QP-NB before and QP-PS before but before purchased seats came into effect.

Well, if you need to purchase a seat (other than an exit row) then you'd have no status.

I posted I have been upgrade from pre-selected seats and even OLCI selected seats.

Yes I have been successful in being upgraded from Y to J even though I paid for exit row seats (on the 380). One of the upgrade conditions states that if you have paid for seats, and you are then upgraded, you do not get a refund for the original seat selection payment.

But was that a points upgrade or an Opup??

I've had both points upgrades to J and OpUps to PE from exit row seats.

I was happy to have the better seat with the OpUp so never enquired about refunds for the exit row seating.

11FEB AUH-CMN EY613 J > F

Originally booked this leg as one ticket KTM-AUH-CMN with a stopover, was only $400 more than Y so a great deal. Specifically booked the AUH-CMN flight which was unusually operated by a A346 as I like these AC for overnight flights and seeing as the flight was deceptively long (9hrs would you believe).

OLCI earlier that day while at the hotel, arrived fresh off the chauffeur to be advised that I had been upgraded to F at check-in, Platinum Velocity FF was in the booking, not sure if that made any difference.

Was able to use the F lounge which was absolutely empty so made use of the restaurant and spa prior to the flight, which was delayed an hour so by 3am the F suite was perfect for 7 hours of sleep and a few hours to enjoy the product!

Had OPUP on DXB-DEL a few weeks prior on EK from deep discount Y to J as well (no status with Skywards either), seems as they were racially profiling however as I would have guessed half of the cabin was upgrades and all westerners, again OLCI as normal but upgraded when printing BP from BP kiosk at DXB. Didn't allow lounge however which was fine as due to remote stand boarding was quite early.

Lastly, was upgraded on RJ at the lounge in AMM on a TLV-AMM-DXB ticket for the relatively short AMM-DXB, again OW Sapphire, was due to cancelled AMM-DXB earlier in the day. Was quite comfortable regional J seat, RJ are oddly quite a good carrier, we just don't see much of them in the APAC region, their lounge in AMM is large and modern and crew very receptive.

Often travel Y when J is priced ridiculous as often travel is last minute one way jaunts, but it has been a nice few months with the arab carriers.

It was a points upgrade.

In reference to other exit row op-ups .... three flights on BA where I was in exit row seats and two of them were op-upp'ed to J and Y+. Currently in the SIN F Lounge where it apears that an op-up will be unlikley tonight where loads are like F0's J1's and Y2's.

I have had this happen a few times with EK as well, I was Gold though. Especially around the time of the Haj (I think that is right) when there is the mass migration of everyone in the white robes (sorry my religious knowledge is terrible) it seemed a lot of the 'western' passengers were upgraded.

Airline: QF
Status: I'm WP, other three were NB
Flight: QF924, SYD-CNS
Booked: Sale Fares (E class), all pre-assigned to Exit Rows.
Upgraded: On check-in, handed 4 J class boarding passes (2A, B, E, F)

I got major brownie points for this from my fellow travellers! They had to serve me my economy special meal, though, because they didn't have enough J class meals. But I wasn't worried - the service was lovely!

That's a great op-up. I assume Y was completely full?

Often they won't upgrade people with special meals because there won't be the J equivalent in J & some think it looks bad if they serve a pax a whY meal in J.

That was the thing - Economy was not full. Only about 80% full.

I wouldn't mind betting that there were some tall people that were in need of legroom that were maybe NB or no status. Sometimes it pays to have a coveted seat in whY like 80A, 71D etc as it's like having an ace up your sleeve.

Last night QF2 (history: last Q jumbo to leave LHR), upgraded at the gate to PE. Very happy as I was feeling unlucky as the couple infront at checkin were upgraded to J - assume they were already booked
PE tho. I'm only a lowly silver+QP too. Flight was chockers. Very impressed with the PE product, but this is coming from someone who hasn't flown long haul J ;)

Nice one, what booking class were you originally in?
