The Operational Upgrade Thread

Had a curious DJ upgrade experience MEL - BNE the other day, evening flight. I was the only occupant of J; behind the violet screen appeared to be about 70% full. I was on a Saver fare. Noice!

I had the same PER-MEL on the red eye (but I used points not op-up).

Loving Qantas today... So my first flight as a newly minted WP and got upgraded from discount Y to J for my Syd-Bkk. Only problem is how am I going to cope with flying home in Y after being so spoilt?

At bag check today I inquired about an earlier flight (it was T-6 when bag acceptance opens at MEL), sorry sir, I have done an override and flights must be full as the first spare seat is two hours after your flight!

Needless to say I did not change, Y0 was expertflyers response, and now I have gone from 4f to 1D, love school holidays!

Op-up on Thusrsday BNE-SYD. Went from 23D to 3E! Flight must have been very full.

P.S Managed 3 Crown Lagers this time! ;)

Was op-up'd SIN-SYD on QF a couple of months ago from PE to J. Was excited about my first trip in PE on the A380 so couldn't hide my grin when he said i'd been bumped.

PE was full, but the back cabin of J each of us had a spare seat beside. Amazing! They've done well now though, I've been hooked into trying to find ways to fly J for future international travel.

Got 2 op-ups recently, both from Y to Y+. Thanks, Qantas. I might have burnt all my op-ups for the medium future. :)

SYD-LAX (beeped at the gate)
JNB-SYD (seat already changed when I checked in)

Not so much as a beep-at-gate but a scribble to my BP at gate with a new seat.

BA SYD-LHR, in SIN I went to board, they looked at my BP, crossed out 13G and replaced it with 60B. I queried politely (before getting angry) if that was a whY seat and then was told "no sir you've been moved to a nicer seat on the upper deck". I forgot that BA had upper deck J starting at 60 ;)

A much more comfortable long flight ensued!

Is it fair to be a little miffed if you pay with points for an upgrade and then a colleague gets an opup on the same flight?
i used 35k points to upgrade to f, my traveling companion was fine to stay in J. He was upgraded at the boarding gate. We are both wp1.
i am very happy for him and we had a whale of a time enjoying QF at its best, but I still feel that I should have gambled the opup.

The only way to ensure you have a good chance of sitting in a comfy seat is to request the upgrade.

I'm not sure what the WP1 hit rate for upgrades is though, it may be higher to CL in which case, it could have been a good chance.

Also, if you had gambled and he'd been upgraded and you hadn't, the whale of a time would not have been had ;)

Felt the QF love today....first time for a long time. Received a "complimentary" upgrade to F for the MEL-SIN leg of my journey to LHR. Expertflyer showed availability in all classes. (The quotation marks around complimentary are there because that was how it was described to me.)

As usual the QF MEL F check in was excellent. I really have had nothing but good experiences there. It is the only part of QF that I have experienced consistency. (I know others have different stories to tell.)

The opup gods smiled upon me today when I went to check in today for my flight tomorrow on Qantas to Manila. I had a hint something was up because even before check in expert flyer was showing my previously selected seat as being available for selection, although Qantas was still showing me as in it. I checked in about 23 hours before departure and received a boarding pass for 1E, not a window seat, but I'll tolerate it ;). The opup seems to have been processed quite far out from departure.

Op-up on DJ today NTL-MEL :D
Long sob story (babysitter) but I had to book a last minute flexi this morning. Shrek was on the same flight in J ( different PNR) Very busy flight.
I had an exit row and was asked prior to doors closing if I'd like to join my partner in 1F

old news but in aug 10, I was flying MEL-LAX economy ticket (RTW Fare ), had 14000 ff to my name so couldnt upgrade the leg, went to checkin SG status and the lovely lady ugraded me to business. Went from 14 hr nightmare to half pleasurable trip :)

QF in my good books. Opup to J on Newman/Perth. A short flight, but a good perk vs economy on the 737. I think the flight was sold out.

Op-up syd Mel yesterday afternoon :) short flight but unexpected on a Friday afternoon. Second op-up since making P1 at the start of the month. Very pleased

I really wonder how the whole opup thing works. Have been WP now for more than a year and yet to receive a single opup. Rather disappointing.

I think you misunderstand how QF handle op-ups... unless you are CL (or possibly WP1), QF will only op-up if they have a genuine operational need to do so (oversold cabin, etc), not just to be nice to their premium pax. Being WP makes it more likely that you'll receive an op-up if QF need to perform one, but it'll still only happen if there's a genuine need.

I've also been WP for almost a year and have only received one op-up in that time, and that was during the month where QF were giving out op-ups like candy, as part "compensating" premium pax for the grounding.
