Yep, have done that a couple of timesBaysider if you want an -up, use your points.
Opups are rare and unexpected.
I think you misunderstand how QF handle op-ups... unless you are CL (or possibly WP1), QF will only op-up if they have a genuine operational need to do so (oversold cabin, etc), not just to be nice to their premium pax. Being WP makes it more likely that you'll receive an op-up if QF need to perform one, but it'll still only happen if there's a genuine need.
I've also been WP for almost a year and have only received one op-up in that time, and that was during the month where QF were giving out op-ups like candy, as part "compensating" premium pax for the grounding.
then how do you explain getting upgraded from Y to premium Y on flights that have 50 plus seats in economy free?

In my experience, they are like UK buses. Nothing for ages and then a whole load come along in a row.
nice one so dom upgrades are there to be hadGot my first op-up today, only a month after achieving platinum, on QF971 TSV-BNE. First day of school holidays and children galore incl. 15 unaccompanied minors.
It was a 734, but not complaining at all, and the service was excellent.
Great way to bring me home![]()
J to F last week on QF127.
No obvious reason as there was plenty of room in J.
