The Planespotting/General AV Geek Thread

Nostalgia is good. Look at the clothes people wore back then. Their Sunday best as opposed to thongs, footy shorts and the Bintang singlets of today. Actually these days it's generally people from the poorest countries that dress the best.

Spoken like a true Darwin visitor!

I think you'll find most Darwin locals would choose their good thongs if they're going into the QP. Single pluggas just isn't the done thing. ;)

At least you were going north - we were all going south and they were only letting south departures depart once every 6 minutes due to the TS. We sat there for 18 minutes.

We did pay for it in the form of moderate chop at cruise until Coffs

....And back in 1980 here's a Braniff 747 in Texan camouflage colours readying for it's LGW-DFW flight. Is that a Laker F28 in the forground?

Did Laker ever have F28's ? I think he was one of the first users of the A300 which he flew long haul. The aircraft in the near foreground I think is a DC10 but what airline?
It is a DC10 operated by Wardair Canada or Wardair International as they came to be. Were taken over by Canadian Airlines in the late 1980's.

Not sure if this counts. Myanma Airways (no 'r' at the end of Myanmar) Fokker in a park in Yangon.

I know an expression involving the word 'Fokker' - and that pretty well describes this bird.

An old Fokker F27, one of the worlds most popular regional airplanes a few decades ago although there are still plenty flying in shall we say less developed countries.
They were noisy, bumpy and cramped airplanes in a 2+2 configuration. I used to enjoy watching the landing wheels retract, clearly visible out the window.

Hence the expression '10 tonne dog whistle'. :p

You are absolutely right. The twin turbo props used to make one hell of a din, a high pitched scream especially when they moved off from their parked position. The noise was not muffled much inside either.
I think it was a characteristic of the Rolls Royce Dart turboprops used in F28's and Viscounts.

Cool photo but I can't help but think... tax dollars not being used well...

Not our dollars, they are C130Hs of which we only ever owned half of the amount in that photo. I suspect it was a joint forcible entry exercise where units are tasked with generating aircraft at short notice for a mission requiring large numbers of aircraft. Not exactly a waste of money but more a practice for what could be a real requirement.
