Saw this AWAC on finals for Hickam AFB HNL while we were at the Eat the Street markets at Ewa Beach on Sat 23 July.

It was an absolute screamer as I don't think the concept of hushkitting is in the AWAC's DNA.

The engines look so tiny compared to those on the 787's.

Yes, an E3 Sentry. Original JT3D turbojet engines. Most of the USAF JT3Ds were retrofitted to quieter and more modern engines - the Sentry seemed to miss out. Our 707s used to have the same - i could barely sleep at night on base at Richmond when one took off!

All USAF E3 were delivered with PW TF33 Turbofans not JT3D turbojets. They still make a hell of a racket, especially when living under the flight path of a USAF base, I do not think I heard a JT3 on take off but had many interrupted nights due to unexpected flight activities.
IIRC UK and French E3 have the CFM56 Turbofans.
USAF (K)C-135s were delivered with the J-57 turbojets then refitted a number of times with turbofans.
My father serviced these aircraft. along with many others, while he was I the USAAF (at the time) and can still quote these little facts....

Ahh yes, you are correct about the engines...

It will be busy in Darwin for a few weeks: No Cookies | NT News

Cool. Heading up to DRW tomorrow for 2 nights for the Cup. I guess the usual suspects from the nearby suburb of Ludmilla will have their piece in the letters to the editor section for the next month whinging about jet noise.

I remember getting ticked off once by some Customs chick for taking a photo of the Dash8 when we got back from Dili during Operation Pitch Black a few years ago. Still not quite sure how that was a breach of national security however I let her have her little power trip because after all, rule number one is the referee is always right. :p

Pics or it didn't happen

Of the cup, or Pitch Black? ;)

Anyone else in town for the cup or pitch black? Should we scramble an AFF gathering?

Oz, I tried PM but your mailbox is full.

Thanks CH, have deleted some and sent you a pm. A catch up would be great if it's not too late to rustle up some participants. We're staying at Melaleuca on Mitchell so I could always round up some stray backpackers if need be.

In the meantime I'd better go and pack! Hope VA don't have an issue with my hat box. :p

Spotted a couple of Herc's in formation flying slow over the NT on the weekend on FR24... Wonder what they were doing :p

Here's a little of tonight's action. According to the F18 captain I was with on the beach, most of this is around 200 feet, except the formation which was at 500.
