I did post the following info in the thread about the arrival of the cards and bag tags, but in retrospect it may be worthwhile having a seperate thread about how well they stand up to wear and tear......

Well, my lovely gold bag tags arrived the day before I was heading to Rio de Janeiro for a week, so I thought I may as well give one a tryout to see how they stood up to the task.

As you can see by the photo, not very well!

The bag was loaded on in ADL, then transferred at SYD, AKL, SCL then off loaded at GIG.

I'll be interested to see how it stands up to the return journey!

I was going to try cabin luggage only to Hanoi today, but the need of safety shoes at the last minute has changed my mind. Purely for scientific reasons, I will attach a new WP tag to my luggage and supply before and after shots...

My routing is Qantas -MEL/SYD (thats where the most damage will occur methinks) SYD/BKK, Vietnam Airlines, BKK/HAN

But ... they were designed by Marc Newson. This can't be possible.

Actually, I expected this to happen. They're too big, and are destined to have an affinity to various nooks and crannies in various baggage handling belts.

Just look at the old Qantas bag tags and how they were ripped off all the time...

I took a few MH flights in June/July and was impressed with everything from check in, onboard service, seat allocation - exit rows all the way and I'm not a member of Enrich.

However after every flight my tags - QF SG ones and others saying - 'This is my bag' etc were all mysteriously no longer attached to my luggage. Dunno if there are souvenir hunters or it's airport policy to remove tags so they don't clog baggage processing.

I have never had any QF tags stolen when flying MH.

OK, we're not travelling every week like some of you - but I'm still able to use original QP tags (10 years old at least), and both Gold (4 years old) as well as the newer Platinum (2 years old)- and no damage to any of them after repeated fights to Asia, Europe and US... just lucky? I don't know!

I've had several "older style" bag tags destroyed -- mostly while in the US, presumably due to rough handling by people and/or baggage carousels.

My current estimate is that these fancy new tags will last around 2-3 months of travel apiece.

As I posted on another thread we have both new and old QF Platinum tags on our bags for our trip MEL-SYD-HNL and return. Let's see what we have left on return:!:

ps Flights are with QF & JQ.

Does anyone think taping (transparent) the tag down to the bag so that it is still machine readable, but less likely to be caught in a wayward pocket of a carousel or baggage trolley by flapping about? Not quite in alignment with the original design concept, I'm sure, but perhaps lessens the chances of damage or loss? I tuck my QP and SG/PS tags under the handle if possible and have not had too many mishaps - although that's not to say a couple have been wrecked.

My tags got their first workout today travelling from MEL->SYD. Two bits of good news - the luggage arrived in Sydney (not used to seeing bags without the paper labels on them!), and there is no sign of any damage to the tag.

Downside is that they bag did not seem afforded anything resembling priority handling

Two out of three ain't bad.

Priority handling, what's that?

Basically when the handlers specifically see a WP tag and "prioritize" it onto the conveyor last.

The priority handling isn't supposed to be about the colour of the tags (as Qantas even says you should share with family etc), but I assume instead that it's related to the data written on chip.

Domestically, priority baggage has never been a strong point with Qantas, so nothing will change !

I had my regular Adelaide to Sydney flight on Monday the 8th of November
Put my new tag on my carry on, even though they arent used in Adelaide

Arrived in Sydney

tag gone

didnt even last one flight

I never bothered with the previous style tags as they didnt actually do anything
Luckily I still have one left so will give it another try
