The Qantas new bag tag test - how long will they last?

Well, arrived back into ADL today and there has been no further damage done to the tag other than what was shown in post 1.

Maybe I was just unlucky with the first part of the journey?

(Although, the rest of the business trip wasn't smooth sailing either;
  • my Blackberry died the day before I left and the replacement one kept switching off then restarting 2~3 times a day,
  • my laptop crashed on the 1st day after I arrived in Rio and the IT guys in our Brazil factory couldn't revive it,
  • I caught a cold on the 2nd day which stayed with me all week,
  • The day before I was leaving the roof of the hotel sprung a leak directly over my suitcase, which was open at the time....) :(
Anyway, I'm off to the US and then Germany in a few weeks time so I'll leave the tag on for those trips and see how it goes! ;)

Plat tag survived unscratched on SYD-BNE-SYD on a two-fold suitbag over the weekend.

My tag lasted well SYD-SIN-DEL. I saw a lot of WP tags on the checked luggage - and a fair few on hand luggage.

My SG tag was removed with force on yesterday's flight MEL-BNE.

Due to the industrial strength bungy cord the attachment point to the bag was ripped out as well thus destroying my waterproof duffle bag.

I wonder if that explains the 30 minute wait for our luggage?

Will call Qantas on Monday and may trial putting my tag inside the bag for my next flight in two weeks time.

Thanks russellferrier for reminding me! :)

I had been contacted by Qantas via email and requested to drop my tag off at my next flight in December (ADL-MEL-LAX-SAN-LAX-TPE-HKG-ADL) which I did, but I haven't heard anything since.

Time to contact Qantas methinks.

As I'm off to Germany next week I might put my second tag on the check-in case and see how that stands up.....

If I ever get the chance to try NGCI with checked luggage (might bring an empty suitcase just for the chance) I’ll put my tag in one of the outside zippered pockets and see if it’s read, if it is then I’ll send it away that way and hope/pray I see it again.

Waiting on some company to come up with a sleeve of some type that can be attached to the bag and the tag encased in it, to make it less likely machines… or *cough* people rip it off.

Just before Xmas, checked my bag in BNE-SYD. Bag arrived, tag did not. No damage to the bag at all, almost looks like it was intentionally removed.

I thought I'd give the new tags a try on my trip SYD-ADL-SYD over the past couple of days - first trip I've had recently where I've needed to check luggage.

The tag survived the trip with no noticeable damage to either it or the mdeium sized soft bag I had with me, however it refused to work on the NGCI scanners in SYD.

Went over to the manual checkin desks and mentioned the lack of a result from the automatic scanner to the woman at the desk, who then mentioned it to her colleague but didn't offer any further advice.

From their collective reactions I would say they are well and truly used to the inadequacies of the system so far.

As an update to my forcibly removed tag, contacted Qantas by phone and was told I have to take bag to airport for them to assess the damage (already repaired with needle, thread and palm). They then transferred me to the appropriate person in charge of tags which turned out to be Jetstar and, after two minutes of "that is not a valid booking reference", "yes it is" to and fro and was then transferred back to Qantas to hang forever in a holding pattern.

Hung up, waited ten minutes and called back to a lovely lady from overseas(?) who provided the information that replacement tags can be ordered online through my account/profile update.

Will see what happens now.

Well both of my old style platinum tags got ripped/missing after a recent trip to LOTFAP. One got broken I suspect in LAX, the other simply missing on return to BNE.

First time in 11 years of QF tags that I've ever had an issue..??

Rang QF to see if there was still any if the old-style tags left and they said no.... That was it :(

Thanks for reminding me, guess I don’t need to call them myself to see about an old style Gold tag :(

Ahhh. That takes me back to the day BP* with the old style gold tags. Mine are still good, slightly faded but still good after XX# years.

*BP Before Platinum.
#XX Too many

Mine are still all good after 2 x MEL - BKK return via SYD and 2 x MEL - AKL return once via SYD.

My bags were tagged with the paper Tags "First" at check in every time and they were pretty quick to arrive.

LOVE the description on Ebay...... should they have also used the abbreviation "DYKWIA"???
