The Qantas new bag tag test - how long will they last?

Received my replacement gold tag today, in fact they sent me two.

Haven't managed to use new system yet as my work uses one booking reference for two seperate persons departing BNE for MEL and it seems to throw the system meaning an encounter with a human to sort it out.

I have not had the opportunity to use my new bag tags yet but in any case I have no idea where they are just now. :(

And I still don't have my NGCI card and tags!!! So much for the comment in the Qantas magazine last month that everyone would have theirs by the end of February!

Neither do I. Although my current address is on a tropical island in Asia, so that might have an effect.

EDIT: Just received an email this morning asking me to confirm my overseas address, with suggestions that I should use an Australian address if appropriate... I guess they really don't like overaseas addresses.

With only 8 days to go till I go on my PS qualifying flight, I wonder if I'll see the new bronze QC card at all.

Got my Silver tags a few weeks after getting Silver status in Jan.

Attached tag to try it and gone after the first trip - Marky has done some good work there -

Off again tomorrow so will see how long #2 lasts.

Where was the flight from/to?

Also, welcome to AFF!

Well mine made it okay from SYD to NRT and back without any sign of damage or loss of a tag. Not that I expect them to last as unscathed in anything more substantial than this such as a RTW or significant trip through the States.

I did MEL-BNE-POM

Threw it on before I left to see how it went and as I couldn't rememer if NGCI was up and running at MEL when I travelled, it wasn't. :D

The bag came back as carry on and I can't remember seeing it when I got there so must have disappeared somewhere along the way to POM.

Pretty sure it was there in BNE when I changed flights.

Also, welcome to AFF!

Thanks :)

Well, it’s a domestic-only system for now, so while there were reports of thefts early on, as they’re a dime a dozen now, I’d say it was in POM where it went missing, and I can’t really say I’m surprised there… just something to keep in mind for future international travel.

mine have survived the following, unscathed:
several SYD/MEL/SYD
2 SYD/HKG/SYD
SYD/LAX/JFK...
and most significantly, a couple of AA flights internally in the US. And given the state they are in when my bags re-emerge from the AA system, that's no mean feat!

On the 11th of March I got an email from QF asking to verify my address so they could send me my pack. Hopefully I'll get them soon!!

Same email received here, also last Friday.

Interesting that another QFF member at my address (PS) got their tags three months ago, without the need to "verify" their address!

The cynic in me wonders if it's just QF's way of telling us that they know we haven't received our packs yet, that we haven't been forgotten (despite the end-of-February deadline being missed), so there's no need to deluge the call centre with enquiries!

Exactly this. Classic marketing tactic. I got the email too. It had a very outdated SC & Points balance for me too.

mine have survived 12 domestic flights now without too much issue...

the big test will come next month when i do my trip to the states...

We've sent out this email requesting verification/update of details as we've had quite a few kits returned to us due to incorrect mailing addresses. Kits 'returned to sender' create additional processing and rework, which prolongs the roll out period.

We would appreciate Members keeping their contact details up to date, as this allows us to have your kits delivered more quickly.

Thanks.

Hi Red Roo. Any update on when the tags will be sent out to the ones who haven't received theirs yet? Got some domestic trips coming up in April and would like to give them a go.

Red Roo,

Just wondering, why was the silver and platinum tag made to look so similar?

Just stumbled on this thread.

I had a HKG->SYD->BNE flight with the tags.
Checked in HKG at the train in the morning, caught the train to the airport in the afternoon and flew out that night.
Went to re-check the bags in for the domestic transfer in SYD and was asked to remove the new tags on our bags. The comment was "we have already lost 8 today".

I've only used it once since for checkin.

Cheers.

Red Roo,

Just wondering, why was the silver and platinum tag made to look so similar?

I would guess because Platinum is essentially a shade of grey, as is Silver, so they’re always going to be very similar to each other. They did differentiate the logo colour (red to white), but I’m guessing the vast majority of people using the bag tags don’t care, as the tag itself does exactly the same no matter what colour it is.

The only way they could have differentiated it more (IMO) would be to change Platinum to something else. I would have suggested Diamond, like the MPC, and then the tag could be white:

Red (QP) - Silver - Gold - White (Diamond) - Black (CL)

Would have worked quite well.
