The Qantas new bag tag test - how long will they last?

Hi Red Roo. Any update on when the tags will be sent out to the ones who haven't received theirs yet? Got some domestic trips coming up in April and would like to give them a go.

We are continuing to send out NGCI kits, with the majority of Gold kits having been issued. Depending on where your kit is in the delivery process relative to your booked flight dates, you may receive them in time for your flights.

Thanks for your patience, appreciate your interest in our new system.

Red Roo,

Just wondering, why was the silver and platinum tag made to look so similar?

Just to clarify, if the underlying concern is that a Silver Q Bag Tag could be confused with a Platinum one in terms of baggage priority, it's worth noting that the colour of the Q Bag Tag does not determine baggage priority. Having said that, I have passed your feedback on to the design team.

At bag drop, the baggage priority associated with the passenger's booking is associated with the Q Bag Tag.

You should be able to phone up the Frequent Flyer Service Centre and be told how far along the posting of your tags is. When I last called (before receiving mine), they were able to tell me what day they would be sent, so they have the information.

Went to re-check the bags in for the domestic transfer in SYD and was asked to remove the new tags on our bags. The comment was "we have already lost 8 today".

HAHAHAAHAHAA .. that's awesome.

Re: The Qantas new bag tag - do they upgrade them when they upgrade cards?

Not that I've attached my gold bag tags yet (since I tend to fly out of Albury for domestic flights or do international flights), but just wondered what will happen when I hit Plat in July - will I get another set of bag tags or am I likely to just keep my gold ones?

I'm not too fussed (since I'm in no rush to use them), but I did wonder if they'd replace them like they do the cards. Anyone found out yet?

You will get a new Platinum card and matching tags. When you go up a level, QF says you get new card and new tags; when you go down, just a new card.

I'm really sorry to think this, but whenever I see them on hand luggage/carry-on I roll my eyes and think derogatory things.

It's really weird for me as I should really care less. (And generally do about such things):-|

Maybe it's because they are basically ugly and bulky - my perception registers this subconciously or perhaps after having my hand cut several times over the years by various tags attached to handles it just gets to me.

FWIW, the best luggage tags I received were the Leather ones Qantas used to issue to [Old¹] Gold frequent flyers.

¹Until early this century, Gold was the top tier.

Me too - especially when the bags are such that it's quite clear they would NEVER be used as hold luggage; the only reason people would put the new RFID tags on them is for their DYKWIA value!

Me too - also have a few of the old QF First leather tags (both the maroon and grey versions). :D

I have the old style QP NB bag tags on my roll-aboard because I check it more often than not.

I'm fully aware that the elites see me putting my bag in the overheard bin and silently judge me. The problem is that they're fricken hard to take off. :(

I'm WP as of yesterday. Still waiting for QF to send me NGCI bag tags. I'm reading so much bad stuff about the reliability of these new tags that I might just stick with my QP NB ones regardless of my status?

How long have your been SG? If over 6 months then you should have a "Golden Set" ...

Yep, definitely not that long. More like a few weeks. Have been QP NB for a long time though. My "still waiting" comment was OT and was more relating to the fact that QP NBs haven't been sent NGCI tags yet.

I will probably try the tags out when I eventually get them, on a bag that I don't mind disappearing.

Anywho, just wanted to point out that sometimes there's is zero DYKWIA factor involved with people who have QFF bag tags on non-checked luggage. Mostly just laziness in my case.

Does anyone have any theories on whether the operation of the bag tag would be hindered if I completely covered it up in electrical tape?

Would make the bag easily identifiable on the carousel and also reduce the amount of eye-rolls I receive on the semi-occasional times I do take this bag aboard as hand luggage. :)

It will be fine.

Even better, you could use black tape and pretend you are CL

Black electrical tape wouldn't be so easy to spot when attached to a black bag. But I'd certainly get a laugh or two if I saw an obviously DIY CL bag tag in the wild. :)

Saw someone with the tag attached to a backpack which was definitely not suitable to check in...
