The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

The seats you see on EF (with no QFF# inserted) are the ones available to Bronze. I assume this either an IT glitch or a quirk of having an infant

Newbie question...I know I've been here a while but I have travelled so little for so long...

I have booked FF flights MEL-OOL-MEL...when I booked the only flight out of OOL with FF seats was 7.15 on a Sunday morning. I thought I'd book it and keep an eye out to see if any later flights might open up and I'd cop the 5k point change fee (I'm at my brother's b'day party Sat night on the Gold Coast so really won't be enjoying a 7.15am flight out of OOL).
I've been checking, and it's not offering me anything. It's 2 weeks away...I'm thinking maybe I should fly out of BNE instead given so many more choices...but when I try to change my flight it will only allow me to choose flights out of OOL, I can't change my origin/destination online. Is that normal? If I rang Qantas would they be able to change me to BNE-MEL for the return leg?

Yes, give them a call if there's something online you want to change to. You'll pay the 5k plus I think service fee of it's an economy booking. I don't think I've ever had success changing an award booking online.

Only benefit of the Qantas lounge I can see are;
  • Boarding calls over the PA and flights on the monitor (the monitors in the EK lounge don't show QF flights), especially because Qantas flights ex-Auckland are... rarely on time in my experience
  • Kapiti Hokey Pokey Ice Cream available
  • L&P available
  • A (tiny bit) of natural light
Otherwise, the EK is superior in every other ways.

Anyone come across a scenario where the qantas seat selection map on a QF codeshare doesn't match that of the airline whose metal it actually is?

and expert flyer shows something different again

Yes, my last EK trip on a QF code. I would tend towards trusting what the operating airline says

Maybe if it's a block space codeshare? That can sometimes result in very different seat maps on the prime & codeshare flight numbers.

Just to confirm this refers to the QF “F” lounge that was to upgraded some time ago?

Just booked 2x CR using QF points on QF website to fly UL (MEL-MAA-MEL). Booked as 2 separate trips (should not have done that, but was distracted and things went bleh! anyways).

Booked one of the trips yesterday and one today. Got the PNRs, points deducted and taxes taken from card.

Given that the flight is operated by UL, I was unable to do seat selection on QF website. So took the PNRs, headed to UL MMB, but can't seem to find where to do seat selection or pre-order meals on UL MMB. Usually these used to be under the "Service Details" section, but that whole section is empty for my PNRs.

Short of calling UL CC and have them select the meals and seat, is there anything I'm missing?

Am I doing something wrong?

Note: Posting it in this thread because I used QF points on QF website to make the booking. Happy for the post to be moved if this thread isn't the right place.

@Ade , is the trip a fair way off? I have a vague memory of a previous UL trip of mine (paid) not having anything selectable until a few months out. That was a few years ago, though.

Nah, this trip is under 3 weeks, departure date 18 Jun … it is weird I can’t see anything under the service sections. MH and TG uses (I think) a similar system and I was able to select seats and meals immediately right after ticketing …

Newbie question. I had posted the same question in the relevant group but posting it here.

I am planning to fly the SYD-BLR-BOM-BLR-SYD route later this year. I am a Platinum FF and I will be booking either Red/Saver fare for this trip.

How will the luggage allowance work in my scenario? The website shows that I can check-in 50kgs, but I can't find any information on what happens once I reach BLR and have to collect my bags and check-in again for Mumbai.

Additionally can I check-in 2 bags for free? (Assuming I will be ok from SYD-BLR).

I am more concerned about the return leg because my bags will be checked in all the way to SYD from BOM. Do they now give additional allowance based on the QF status?

Has anyone had any experience on the same route recently?

Lastly, for a regular ticket without any status, is the allowance 30kgs or 15kgs from BOM-BLR-SYD?

I called both Qantas and Indigo, non of them gave me a straight answer.

hoping to understand how this will work as Indigo airlines are not part of one world.

Gee if you call both airlines and neither can give you a definitive answer, then it is bit of a worry.

Luckily we have AFF & it's wealth of experience.

I'm not a newbie but I have a question that belongs on this thread.

I have been collecting Velocity points for a few years now, since it is harder (now impossible) to get KF miles at 2:1 and with Velocity bonuses, better to let the points live in my account instead of expiring in Krisflyer.

So now I have 400k+ points (soon to be 600k) in Velocity but only 26k Qantas points. I heard about the new "better options for Qantas points" marketing spiel the last few months.... is this actually turning out to be a decent option for Qantas points?

I only get points from CC churning, minimum spend, flybuys, other little offers.

My travel needs - heading to Sth America via Europe or USA.
2023 - I used my KF points to go RTW in Biz with a lot of planning.
2024 - much harder now that the tools for finding awards don't work, so I paid for economy to Europe, then some old AAmiles to get to Sth America, then Velocity points on SIA metal from Sth America to Sth Africa, to Melbourne.
2025 - I want to just go direct to Chile SCL return or have more options to skip Asia and reach anywhere in USA/Europe in Business Class with the least amount of points.

26k QFF points won't get you very far, and the "?new Classic+ reward options are goung to be around, but at a substantial increase on the points requirement unfortunately.

In a very quick search for January, I see SYD-SCL for 204k points as a C+ reward (in economy) vs 79k for a CR reward involving 3 flights via LAX and Lima.

Bisiness? That's a whole other story tbh.

I'm not sure this is achieveable with such a low balance - even accounting for CC earn.

If it were me, I would consider looking at using the VA points stash on United over to say Houston or an easylt coast gateway and potentially a QF reward on LA from tgen. UA may even get you closer in eg GRU or GIG. AC may also be an option but that is a fair diversion north imo.

I'd consider QF points pointially for intra South America if required(and available)
