The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

26k QFF points won't get you very far, and the "?new Classic+ reward options are goung to be around, but at a substantial increase on the points requirement unfortunately.

In a very quick search for January, I see SYD-SCL for 204k points as a C+ reward (in economy) vs 79k for a CR reward involving 3 flights via LAX and Lima.
Being dynamic, the current lowest whY fares are $1200 to $1300 each way which is translating to 104,000 pts plus $198 each way. I couldn’t see any CRs in any class….
Business? That's a whole other story tbh.
Nothing at all! We lucked in with some J CRs back in Feb/Mar but they appeared to have been pulled on that route entirely. Also complicated by the block codeshare arrangement with LA.
I'm not sure this is achieveable with such a low balance - even accounting for CC earn.

If it were me, I would consider looking at using the VA points stash on United over to say Houston or an easylt coast gateway and potentially a QF reward on LA from tgen. UA may even get you closer in eg GRU or GIG. AC may also be an option but that is a fair diversion north imo.
Yep. VA pts with UA via Nth Am and down or just pay cash during a QF Sale.

I'd consider QF points pointially for intra South America if required(and available)
I did this also but it pays to check the cash fare v points.

Oops I forgot that I just looked at one way only, and yes the C+ are dynamic. I couldn't find CR on SYD-SCL either to compare directly.

If you can find them, SYD-SCL QF J return as CR is 216,800 pts and it was $599 taxes and fuel fines back in Oct (for travel Feb/Mar).

This may be the most inane question yet, but how do I post a new message (ie question) to any of these sub-threads/threads? I've watched the YouTube vids and trawled the posts etc but can't find the instructions (meaning, do I create a new thread or reply to one that asks a similar question or is there some icon I need to look for?).

Suggest you go to 'Forums' up the top, select the forum - or broad area you want to ask about, - (eg Qantas, or Virgin, or British Airways, or Accor etc), scroll down the recent topics there and if you see a similar topic (doesn't have to be exact), go to that thread and ask away.

If you enter the forum and go to post a new thread, by clicking 'post thread' in orange at the upper right, then start typing out a title, the system will suggest similar topics which you can choose if they suit, or just carry on creating a new topic. Absolutely no problem creating a new topic - its its identical to an existing one, a moderator will merge it.

Here's the 'post thread' button in the Commonwealth Bank forum if your question was about the Commonwealth bank.

I’ve seen a lot of first posts as new threads (I’ve actually reported a few dodgy first posts 😉).
I wasn't totally sure tbh - hence the ?

I did search trying to find a policy or whatnot, and the nearest I came was criteriavin the lounge invitations sub-forum(and referals) which mentioned a post limit, how new a member etc, but that implied it was forum specific. I went to AFF Help Desk and other areas but saw nothing obvious...

So yeah, I was a lil confused to be sure.

Pretty sure you’re not supposed to be able to post a link until after X posts.

If this is available anytime I want it, 216k + $600 is a good enough deal for a direct flight without having the hassle of flying long distances in economy (I can't afford paid biz) to get to Sth America . I'm taking a China Southern dreamliner from MEL-xCAN-FCO in a few months and dreading the 23 hours. Of course I'm doing 2 weeks in Europe before Sth America but I really hope the new Qantas A350s will open up something like MEL-EZE or MEL-GRU.

I might just end up paying cash for an economy flight to Sth America and maybe get some upgrade offer.

CR seats were never available anytime unfortunately, always strictly limited number of seats per flight and they will / have become even harder to find. But there was quite a lot of CR+ albeit in Economy for 104k each way.

That’s probably the best option if you can’t pay for Biz but you will still need more QFF points in your account to request upgrades in both directions.

random question, has anyone successfully claimed qantas price promise recently?

Through-checking pax and bags from QF domestic to OW int'l connection via SYD? Should this be doable?

My overnight guest messaged that in BNE they were checked to SYD only when departing on a QF domestic flight. They have a 12 hour break overnight in SYD before connecting to JL52. We were hoping that the bag would have travelled through to the destination (as per this QF guidance) but they need to be lugged around Sydney and they need get to T1 earlier than we wished. The trip is all on a single ticket, issued by JL.

The BNE check-in agent hinted on an overnight connection being the reason for short-checking the bags (and issuing BP to SYD only). Do we really have a bottleneck like this in SYD?

I have separate bookings MH623 KUL - SIN then the same evening QF52 SIN - BNE. Is there any possibility to have my bags tagged to BNE at KUL despite not booking the flights together?

It doesn't hurt to ask, but it's highly unlikely that MH will do that for you, sorry.

Now, in the past, there were services provided at Singapore Changi where you would go to a transfer desk for your connecting flight, and they would issue your BP and make arrangements for your bags to be collected and retagged to the final destination, but I'm not sure this is operating any more. Someone else may have a recent experience here.

The good news though, is that SIN is one of the better organized airports on the planet, and so even if you are forced to pass through immigration, collect bags, change terminals and go back through again, you will still have heaps of time between the scheduled arrival of MH623 and the scheduled departure of QF52.

Enjoy the trip!

Cheers,
Matt.
