The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Newbie here - booked tickets to Jakarta yesterday for my partner and I.
With DSC now on offer from today, is it best to cancel and rebook?

This DSC will see us both get to Gold at he completion of this trip.

Thanks
if you're within the 24 hour cancel window - and the fares haven't changed (much) then yes. I'd say do it. Gold is considered the sweet spot of the program and is definitely worth it over silver.

If you can without penalty but it does need to be a new booking to qualify.

We booked on a flex ticket, so should be ok.
In which order would it be best - book new ticket & cancel old or cancel existing & book new?

If this is in play cancel and rebook.

It‘s not something I do often, if ever but hotels I rebook first and cancel existing (but I’ve usually not spent $$s).

Here's some more detail from QF on the 'Cancel for any reason', within 24 hours, policy:

There's a few tricks and traps, but provided your journey originates from Australia, and was booked direct with QF, you are likely fine.

Cheers,
Matt.
Thanks for that. Seems like I will be all good.

Just need my partner to wake up and put in for DSC before I redo the bookings. She's currently away on the other side of the world.

Another issue that I'm currently having and not sure about other, but when I put my multi city search:

SYD - CGK, then CGK - BNE, it doesn't allow me to view other flight options. When clicking on 'show other flights' it crashes. Current and only connection options are SYD - CGK via MEL, and CGK - BNE via MEL. Good for extra status, but a pain that I can't select better connection times.

Is this a normal issue?

No, and someone else was reporting the same problem.

But it’s working for me on a basic multi-sector SYD-CGK//CGK-BNE.

Did you try and force it to route SYD-MEL/BNE-CGK etc?

No forcing the route.

Selecting Syd - CGK, and the only option it gives is via Mel, but the connection time is less than 2 hours, which i am worried about. Was hoping to make it a little longer.

Just on the phone to qantas now, trying to work our this free cancellation, and being told its a $500 fee.. Ah the joys..
Update: Confirmed no fees, flights cancelled and flights rebooked with DSC.. Thanks for the information. Looking forward to experiencing Gold after having just got Silver status.

Hi guys,

I'm looking at booking some economy reward seats from HKG to SYD end of Feb 2024. All I can see at the moment are CX flights, but I'm specifically after QF flights. I'm only a Bronze pleb so do I have to wait a little more for these to be opened up?

Looks pretty grim for QF flights. I can’t see any.

Welcome to AFF @Roger888 :)

I think as bronze you should be able to see any availability (noting that QFF releases premium seats to Bronze members 297 days out; econ I think doesn't differentiate). But SYD, as Plat, can definitely see them already, if there, and it looks like the cupboard is bare.

But on the positive side, QFF seems to be releasing seats in an ad-hoc fashion at various times, and not the predictable way of previously. So keep looking and you might get lucky.

Remember also that when Qantas says it has 'millions' (I think the figure is) of FF seats, it means mainly on other airlines, incl China Airlines most recently.

I did notice at least one day a CX “day flight” HKG-SYD. I’d personally take that over the QF red eye if travelling down the back of the bus.

G'day all, I'm taking my partner on a status run from SYD to CNS where I'll pay for my J seat and we'll use points for a reward seat for her. As far as I can tell I'll need to book these separately and then join them up via the call centre later.

When I do the individual booking and get to the seat selection part, I only see one seat available in J, either when I'm booking for the paid seat or the reward seat. However when I tried with a booking for two adults and get to the seat selection part, there are two seats available together. Is it safe for me to go ahead and do the separate bookings and expect to get the same seat availability?

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the advance allocation for seats in business based on status is close to being exhausted. You’re probably getting two seats because you might be logged in as silver? If separate bookings you might only find one seat is available for now, and the other will need to be allocated closer to the time (t-80 when the whole cabin is opened up). You’ll l8kely be able to move both of you together at that stage… although might be more interesting for 2 x windows given the route.

Great, thanks for the advice! Yes, logged in as Silver.

Hey All.
Due to my trip being for work and my wife is coming along with me I had to make 2 seperate bookings.
I am WP and she is bronze.
I selected my seats and call Qantas (Manila answered) They are telling me they cant move her to the seat next to me even though I can see it is empty.
They have linked the bookings, al though I still can't see here booking when I manage mine and she does not come up as another passenger to assign her seat on my booking.
They tell me all they can do is request it and when we get to the airport they will try to sit us together.
I have called before a they had sorted this out in the past.
Any ideas?

I should also probably mention that I booked higher fare seats than my wife for the additional DSC. SO hopefully that does not make any difference, but can't see why.

HUACA. I've never had an issue doing this. The difference is my wife is SG, but that shouldn't matter. Did it less than a week ago actually. I'm not sure if I spoke to HBA or elsewhere. The person made me think elsewhere but I could hear an Australian accent in the background. Annoyingly though previously this used to be a two minute call. This time she had to put me on hold for about 10 minutes while she did it.

A few options. Keep calling to get hobart. Wait until T-80 when seating opens up for the whole cabin, and select seats together. Confirm seats together now by sitting at the back of the plane with the other passenger.

Linking bookings is simply a note in the booking, it won’t cause the other passenger to show up on your booking.
