The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Hiya Experts!

Hoping you can share your thoughts with me on best J seats on the refurbed A380 for a QF1 SYD to SIN.

As lowly Bronze my partner and I (thanks to the amazing advice here) know our likelihood of F upgrade is unlikely, so hoping to make the most of T-80.

We’ve currently picked 19A & 20A as we both love a window and I’m not fussed about sitting next to my partner (we have the whole holiday together haha) so we have skipped the middle row - but if available I’d love to pick something up with WP’s/WP1’s as I’m keen to make sure they haven’t run out of my chosen menu items by the time I order (few allergies to contend with that special meals don’t accommodate for).

Is the front small cabin where it’s at? Do they start orders/service there?

What are your favourite seats on QF1?

Not at all.

I mean if you want to provide flight details we can see how it looks, but you just never know the make up if who is on the list right up to the flight.

Is it likely? Probably not, but unless J is sold out right now, there's a non zero chance.
Thank you, it is QF1269 on 26 March. CBR - MEL.

If I do get lucky I'd like to go into the J lounge rather than upgrade on boarding, but that would be fine too.

Questions about the Qantas Sky Spritz for those that have had it...
1. By the name I assume it's Qantas' "signature drink" on their flights? Or do they have any others? I'm only somewhat aware of a few others like the Cathay Delight and JAL's Sky Time drink.
2. How would you describe its taste, or what sort of alcoholic drink it is? (I don't drink a lot of alcohol normally so I probably wouldn't be able to fully appreciate a cheap vs expensive wine or champagne for example)
3. The drinks menu mentions that it's "available on selected flights". On the QF flights that I have remembered to ask about it when flying in J, I've generally been told it's "no longer available". However, on the most recent flight I had, the FA told me they had provided two to other customers earlier and they were all out (not too fussed about this). I'm more curious as to which flights actually have this drink available, or if they serve it at the lounges too?

Hi there!

I’m not able to answer your questions about which flights it’s served on, other than international flights, but here’s a bit more info about the spritz itself-

It’s a wine based “coughtail” with added native Australian botanicals and fizzy (soda?) water, and was developed in conjunction with a well known winemaker from Mudgee.

If you’ve tried an Aperol Spritz coughtail, this is probably something you’d enjoy.

You can find a bit more detail here: Buy Sofi Sky Spritz with Davidson Plums and Finger Lime 24x250ml Cans | Qantas Wine

I'd say theres a fairly reasonable chance. Of course it depends on those ahead of you on the list. No promises given CBR is a fairly elite heavy place at times, but I'd feel chances for a silver are not too bad.

Good luck and enjoy the A220!

Ah that explains the QF/NZ page then. I was sure QF used to codeshare on some trans tasman flights though?

Ok so the full answer is simply "No" :)
Many years (decades?) since QF NZ codeshared trans Tasman. Supposed to be in competition now days for TT.
From google
  • "27 June 2007 — Qantas has sold its entire 4.2 per cent stake in Air New Zealand overnight. Air New Zealand said that Qantas had advised it after the close ..."
  • 25 Nov 2002 — Under the first tranche, Qantas will subscribe for convertible notes equal to a 4.99 per cent interest in Air Zealand at 44.5 NZ cents per share ..

I've heard flights called for people travelling on AirNZ in the Adelaide QP.
I think ADL is a "special case" as there is/are no defined AirNZ Koru lounge, so AirNZ/Koru pays QF for the priviledge.
If you go to the AirNZ Koru lounge website, its says so, under Loounge Access, other places where there is a defined AirNZ Koru, no QF lounge access.
So, still have to give it time, after dep the QF QP ADL lounge, (being a Koru member), to get through outgoing immi processing, and outgoing int sec screening downstairs, and then up the escalators to get into the enclosed zoo.

Hi experts!

Just wondering what’s the deal with earning QFF points when flying on domestic China flights with China Eastern MU flights number but the flight is operated by Shanghai Airlines (FM) which is a wholly owned subsidiary of China Eastern? The wording on the earning chart seems to suggest that it would qualify for QFF points based on the “marketing carrier” being a QFF partner and don’t see any specific wording on excluding codeshare flight.

Well, there is this:

Qantas Points are earned on all eligible booking classes, except on China Eastern codeshare flights operated by an airline other than Qantas.

Now if they own FM you would think points would be earned, but the above suggests otherwise.

May need to seek clarification from QFF.

Well I couldn’t find a MU operate flight that suits my schedule so I’ve went ahead to book the FM flight anyway. Worst case I’ll credit those to VS and redeem them for VA flights 😂

Any tips here much appreciated- if anyone knows if they do they start J service from the front smaller cabin on refurbed A380 (or elsewhere?) it would be great to know :D

IME yes the mini cabin gets served first.

But ahead of that, they tend to serve CL, then P1 then WP before everyone else (unless they are sleeping). They know your status and will take orders of higher status pax first. If something has run out I've usually been told during ordering not at serving time, given you fill in the meal card before take-off.

Good news, points upgrade for tomorrow came through this morn. 😁
There were still 3 seats avaiable.

They take orders from the front but it’s still done by FF status.
So a P1 in row 20 will get their choice before Bronze in row 11.

EDIT: Also the service order is switched around IME.
First service lunch/ dinner etc is mini cabin and moves backwards.
Breakfast prior to landing starts at the back of the J cabin and ends up the front.

Yes - though it is technically a oneworld lounge (an Affiliated Lounge), rather than a Qantas Lounge, there are arrangements for Qantas Club members here, when flying on QF or AA. Note that Qantas Club lounge invites & passes are not accepted at this lounge.
