The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

IME yes the mini cabin gets served first.

But ahead of that, they tend to serve CL, then P1 then WP before everyone else (unless they are sleeping). They know your status and will take orders of higher status pax first. If something has run out I've usually been told during ordering not at serving time, given you fill in the meal card before take-off.
Thanks for confirming :)

Very happy to report at T-80 I’ve moved us to the front cabin. We’re first to board anyway (disability- last off too so not the perk people might think it is lol) and we usually get to have a good chat to the CSM before anyone else boards, so I might take a look at the menu then and flag if I only have limited options available so they might be able to pop what I can eat on order earlier than other lower tier pax.

Anyway I’m assuming not many people make use of the refurbished bar still?

I have just a simple domestic return rewards booking with 2 adults - a possible change of circumstances may mean that only 1 of us is now able to take the trip.

Knowing Qantas and their monumental screw-ups with rewards bookings, what are the chances of Qantas completely screwing up / cancelling the trip in full inadvertently, rather than just cancelling 1 adult? Surely this shouldn't be too difficult but I'm a bit weary.

Honestly I'd prefer to wear the 12k pts cancellation fee (as crazy as it sounds, but it is Qantas after all) and re-book with 1 adult, rather than having to deal with phone staff to try to re-instate their mistake if they do actually cancel both adults instead of just the one - but there's no more award seats for the same flights.

The dramas have usually been with partner awards and not reissuing tickets - it’s then impossible to get the seats back. At least on QF metal, they can release seats to correct a stuff up.

But that aside, can you see the option online to split the ticket? I’ve never done it but presumably that ought to work for booking on QF metal and then cancel just one (if required)?

Maybe someone else has done that recently and can advise if good/bad idea.

I've not done it myself, but believe you can self-serve for this action:

Cheers,
Matt

I used the (premium) call centre to successfully split a ticket into two and then cancel one of them last year.

But if you can do it online as others posted, that perhaps reduces the risk.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look if it can be done via the MMB Portal and if course if it can be (if we do need to change), I'll self serve.

Logged into the MMB portal and separated passengers - we've now got 1 x PNR each and all looks fine (checked the RJ website and e-ticket numbers for both are showing).

Can't believe how easy it was (emphasising this due to mostly issues with Qantas)! I'm shocked! 😂😂

Cool. Handy to know that it works!

Is it usual to not be able to check in online for QF11?

I've tried through the website and through the app but get an 'unable to check in, locate staff member' message both ways. I've rung Qantas and they have advised that the flight is already "under airport control" and that is why I can't check in. This has never happened to me before so it rattled me a bit as I'm on a reward booking and know a lot of people have had trouble with last minute reward bookings being cancelled or lost. The Qantas agent on the phone assured me there are no problems with my booking but it still feels unusual to me.

They may want to see your passport / confirm the APIS data / ESTA, or there's been a seat or cabin change, or something else. Many potential reasons for this. I've been in the same situation several times (though, going to Asia or Europe) and it's been all good always.

Hi all, how soon does everyone find their Gold card / tags arrive after meeting status ? Do Q tags still get sent out ? :)
2-4 weeks would be quite usual, if I've understood correctly. Hope for two but prepare to have just one tag.

Im going SYD-LAX August this year and I want to use my points. I have accumulated enough points but I am not great at using them. Of course when I have enough points there are no reward flights available other than economy. I was hoping to fly Premium econ at minimum. If there are no reward seats available for that class, what is my best road to get there? If I book econ can you use the points for a guaranteed upgrade or is it always going to be a bidding situation and just wait and see if you get it ?

There are no "guaranteed" upgrades so yes you would go onto the lottery, and depending on your status, odds may not be in your favour (sorry)

August is still a peak travel time and rewards have been snapped up in premium cabins months ago

There is speculation that dome more may be released sometime soon with the announcement of QFF changes - but that is all it is - speculation.. and even if so, no knowing if any for LAX when you want alas.

Thankyou, glad to hear that it's still useful.

So I logged into the app precisely at 80hrs prior to the flight and I managed to snag 4D on my upcoming flight (B737).

Seems most of Rows 4 and 5 are still available so maybe not that many "savvy" travellers / higher tiered members or perhaps a light(er) load?

At OLCI (t-24) all seats open up for free including emergency exit.

I did notice prior to T-80, Rows 13 and 14 were available for selection with a fee.

Now at <T-80, those seats are all now crossed out / unavailable. They must be due to be released at 24hrs prior to the flight as per your advising.

If they are - which would you pick - Row 13/14 or Row 4? Rows 13/14 would have the advantage of being slightly more spacious due to the movable armrest, but Row 4 is pretty much at the front.

Row 4. Convenience of being able to put bags under the seat in front, proximity to front = easier to leave the aircraft, and more likelihood of there being an empty middle seat (at least in my experience)

Thanks, it's been almost 10 years since I flew QFd (pre-onboard Wi-Fi days) so haven't had any recent experience on it.

I've looked at the seat map now - Row 4 is now all occupied.

I've got an aisle seat. :)

Also set another reminder to select seats for the return leg.

You must expect to be ejected from row 4 if some elites book the flight late.

Happened to me and many others.
What do they call it..... Operational move or something, it stinks.
