The Qantas Singapore Lounge

Was in the lounge myself last night, very comfortable, friendly staff, delicious coughtails and plenty off space.

Apart from the gentleman who continued to sip his drink and read his book whilst his toddler was screaming to the point of turning purple for about 20 minutes, everything was fine and dandy.

Looking forward to my next trip now, it certainly is a relief after 5 hours on a China Southern flight...

Ah, yes, I must have been seated quite near you. There were a few toddlers and a few tantrums. I do not envy parents who travel with children around that age.

The Qantas Singapore Lounge will be my initial visit, mainly to use the internet access to make contact with my Singapore contacts and confirm final arrangements for dinner/drinks.
Just as well you won't have any need for a desktop or a printer.

And how hard is it for Qantas to provide 1 desktop that is off limits to children?

I can't think of one lounge in the world that I've been too which specifically says that children are not allowed to use these computers.

Frankly, I don't know why it only seems like SIN where kids want to use the computers, especially these days when parents are usually toting iPads or their smartphones to keep the munchkins busy.

To be honest, in the previous SIN QF/BA F Lounge, there were only 4-6 computers, but I never saw kids on them once. They were always occupied with adults. Of course, in those days, devices like iPads didn't exist.

Actually there are quite a few lounges that mention children should not be using the computers unsupervised. And supervised does not mean sitting away from them drinking and occasionally looking over.

My statement was for 1 computer in the lounge for people to use to do some printing and catching up on emails. Sitting a child down to play games on Facebook for 2 hours is not going to achieve that outcome.

In my experience Australians tend to travel with their children more than other nationalities and being a Qantas lounge there is a greater chance of seeing children using the computers.

I am still not convinced though that it is the children wanting to use computers but rather the parents wanting to dump their children somewhere where they do not need to supervise them.

Who needs a desktop for checking emails in this day and age

There are still people who don't carry tablets or laptops. And smartphones are great little devices but their size is also a weakness for those who are not so visually agile when they need to do more serious work.

Certainly you might not need a whole giant bank of them, but I think a couple would not be out of place.

I carry a netbook or tablet, but prefer to use a desktop in airline lounges. Much easier; don't have to worry about wifi logins etc and much easier to print if you need to. Also much bigger screens, which make life easier.

I would think anyone needing to do do serious work in a lounge would be doing so on their own laptop

No need to carry a tablet or a laptop. A phone is the only gadget I need on holidays and I am not going to try and use it to surf the internet for the things I need to do.

All Qantas had to do when they split with BA was to split the desktops in the First Lounge 2 each and install a printer. Also no idea why they removed the dozen or desktops they had in the Business lounge before the renovations.

Can WPs use the EK lounges even if they're not travelling on an EK flight?

Platinum One, Platinum and Gold Frequent Flyers have access to the Emirates lounge where available across Australia, Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, LHR access only if on EK, otherwise you just need to be flying EK or QF as your next onward flight.

Serious worker, yes. But JohnK is not referring to his doing some serious work - as he said, check email, print off a few things.

I probably wouldn't want to be doing any serious work on a public system for a couple of reasons, unless the laptop packed it. One is that the system is likely to lack the resources required to complete that work (at least, computing resources). Two is that it is a public system. I at least always try to restart the computer when I use a public system, as well as use whatever programs installed on there to check for traces.

Warehouses are not supposed to have desktops.

I thought I saw a desktop or two at IKEA. Not that they were for sale, of course. ;)

Some lounges are using laptops these days instead of desktops - they're just Kensington locked to the desk. Have to admit surprise how people don't knock them off, though...
