The Qantas Singapore Lounge

I'm surprised that people would risk using public computers for anything that requires a password, particularly email. If your email account is compromised, it is easy to compromise other accounts. Particularly risky for someone embarking on a long flight, as any warnings of the compromise won't be received until the end of the trip.

Agreed, desktop computers in lounges are very last decade.

So am I, perhaps I am even last century, but a desktop with a printer for me is one of the basic requirements for a lounge.

Look upthread, someone got it wrong with such a "so last decade" consideration and QF indeed backtracked and have now arranged for a printer service.

It is only last decade. We're not asking for shag carpet or a slide rule. :p

Most of what you said would be treated with indifference by many people who are not members of this forum, let alone who are not technologically knowledgeable.

I'm sure most reasonable people are aware of this risk. People should also take reasonable precautionary steps when using public terminals.

Mind, wifi can be intercepted (though that's a bit more advanced). Let alone eavesdropping risk in a lounge.

I think there's enough people who will want a computer available in the lounge who are willing to accept the risks. I just think there isn't enough to justify installing a dozen of them.

What hasn't been explained, though, is the mechanics of how this service is supplied. Is it a computer system with attached printer, standalone printer (with print from USB facility) or at the front desk (e.g. email front desk and they print for you)?

As for 'basic requirement', dare I say there are many lounges - even reputable - which would fail this criteria.

It has been explained, air print and collect at the service desk.

From memory from a sign.
The printer works via AirPrint (an Apple Service).

Basically it requires you to be on the Qantas WiFi network.

To print from an Apple device - select the printer and go.
To print from an Android device - need an AirPrint compatible app - eg PrintBot (note pro license is $4.50)
To print from PC - install an AirPrint driver - see How to enable AirPrint for Windows

I note that no instructions are given for Android/ PC in the lounge.

(Edit: beaten by markis10 who even had a photo :-(

Note I have not tested the above.

Thanks for pointing that out. As you can tell, I haven't read this entire thread thoroughly...

Do they have a terminal there anyway? Doesn't help much if you're trying to print something on your USB and you have no laptop, though the front desk are quite nice, so I guess they will be happy to help with this.

That looks great until the last step: "That's it. Now open any document or email on your device with iOS 4.2 or later installed and click on the Print option to print the document wirelessly[sic] over a WiFi connection."

What it you don't have a device with iOS?

LOL, I believe a normal print will work.

Visited the lounge again on the weekend and I am very undecided about it

Maybe I was too hungover/drunk/sunburnt but I never really felt relaxed or comfortable in there

May have been the screaming kids that the Father was just ignoring though...

The food/drinks were okay, the staff were so-so. They seemed to really look after some customers and then treat others rudely

I much prefer the MEL/SYD F lounge or even the SYD J lounge to be honest

I think the lounge is just too open/loud - Looks good but not that functional

Things happen slowly in Singapore ROFL. Good to see that QF Branding have their fingers on the pulse and eyes on the game lol

Well spotted by the way :D

Maybe a step too far - i'll give it a go on the 2nd ... although do you HAVE to have iTunes & Bonjour installed?

I have had a Mac for the last three years, and I have never had to use Bonjour (if it is even installed on my Mac). I don't think iTunes would be necessary, but as iOS is mentioned as a requirement, it would be installed anyway.

I don't ... and won't ... have any iDevices.

So does that mean no print?

Yes I did - see post #448 - see the reference to the mention of iOS ??!?!

This requires the person using the lounge to be prepared.

A desktop connected to a printer that anyone can use is much simpler.

It means they are catering for the majority as opposed to the minority, the only preparation most need is an iPad! In the last year I have noticed the majority of users sitting at a PC are kids, when its an adult they are normally using it as a chair with their own device.

You are assuming everyone has an iPad (or tablet).

I don't own either, so shoot me. But, I do carry a laptop more often than not, so I'm not exactly out of luck in a situation like this.

I don't get how the users of PCs could be kids when I thought their parents usually already have entertainment devices for them. (Well, yes, I suppose adults need to have their entertainment device as well, which may be the shared with the kids...) But, whatever. And adults using the computer system just for the chair - ridiculous (unless there are other computers available).

From reading the AirPrint for Windows activation help, it seems you need Bonjour to work it, and further to that (since Bonjour rarely comes on its own), you need to install iTunes. What a crock.... (I haven't Googled yet to see if there is a way around this)

Until you need to print something and someone is sitting at the computer.
