Re: [Repudiated by QF] QF removing Any Seat Awards (ASA) from 08 April

(completely OT and mods feel free to delete)

When I actively reconsider using a word because I think a portion of the audience will not understand, then I repudiate the richness of my language. Sometimes the lowest common denominator is useful. As some proudly judge others by their dress, then surely celebrating and embracing the breadth of our language is something to be maintained and linguistic dumbing down to be avoided? Actually we all use our vocabulary, and usually don't even stop to think whether the words we use will be understood by the audience (unless we face people who we know have a much poorer vocabulary than ourselves, in which case just shout louder).

Indeed it surprises me when a word I use is not understood.

After all, is my vocabulary so erudite, esoteric, arcane, and obfuscatory that it must be modified "for all the dummies"?

There's a lot of cogitation required for this thread, especially if your vocabulary is inchoate.

At least he is verbose.

And to think I was having to figure what SOOL meant from a post.
I do hope you don't find yourself "waiting For Godot" any time this year.

Being reversed into by a P-plater is not the best way to start the day...

Hopefully it wasn't your child who did it.

I'm not old enough to have a kid who drives! :shock:

Local high school student; they get to use my local gym for free over the holidays. Apparently no one taught him to check his mirrors before reversing (and to stop when someone leans on their horn)...

:oops: Sorry about aging you there. Hopefully they have insurance then. Or if they don't you do. The joys of comprehensive insurance were discovered by me a couple of years ago when a woman rear ended me and as we exchanged details she asked me not to report it because she wasn't insured.

My response was that I didn't care because I was insured and it would be reported as per CBR law that all car accidents be reported to the police regardless. My insurance company took care of everything and I never heard from them about her status.

No stress. Lets just say if I that was my kid, I'd have had him at 10 :p

I have insurance, but got my repairer to quote and its less than the excess, so we are just sorting it out ourselves. I'm not fussed as long as it gets fixed; they're a high school student so I don't think they are too flush with $$.

SOOL= cough out of luck

I really don't like some of these abbreviations. DH is another that riles me.

I automatically think of Richard Cranium rather than dear husband.

I would never have guessed.

DH and SO are stupid abbreviations but people love to use them for some reason unknown to me.

SOOL= ...

S can also stand for 'sod', which is more demure and commonly picked up from the sitcoms or other TV shows from Old Blighty.

Some abbreviations are nice for being a bit more genteel, or at least to add a bit of character. SWMBO comes to mind ;) as does DYWKIA.

I made a guess at SOOL as being 'sadly out of luck'. Should have known better and thought in expletive terms. Getting old like you, I suspect :(. It's a different world, mate - but fighting it will get you nowhere.

Old is right. :(

Not sure fighting is the right term but it is extremely confusing trying to decipher some of these abbreviations. A friend who is older sends some really weird text messages that take me a while to decipher.

I do not have the morivation to learn something I do not agree with. Oh well....

Well Australia's sporting reputation was restored today with an Australian team taking out the World Zodiac Paddling title today in the Gulf of Guinea somewhere off Gabon.
Modesty prevents me from naming the team.

Pics or it didn't happen. :mrgreen: :p
