I've had a productive afternoon. I've been food shopping, sent off for my AFF luggage tags (finally!) & booked my accommodation for Japan & one of my US destinations (PDX). I'll be staying in Skinjuku for about $120 AUD a night. Hotel looks alright.

Fantastic area - good choice.

Looking more at the hotel website, I've made a great choice! It's right next to a Metro station, convenience store on the ground floor & a coffee shop on the premises. And I get VFF points for it as well!

Last time I was there in 2011 I stayed in Nippori (which wasn't bad) but this place is cheaper but better!

I was going to recommend the E-Hotel........... however I then saw your next post ;)

I stayed there back in April for 1 night with Mrs Flashback. The rooms are tiny, but it's great for the price. It's comfortable/clean and that's all I really care about. We didn't arrive till late (had been at Disneyland all day) and left 10am'ish, so suited the purpose well.

I hate it when people ask a question but they don't fully ask the question. Had they had of given me the full information about what they were asking, I would not have bothered to answer the question because it isn't my area of expertise.

I'm basically only there to sleep so as long as it's comfortable/clean, that's good! I guess we'll find out in February!

Yep, it does the job nicely. Plenty of noodle bars and such around as well and open quite late.

Tralalalalalalalalalala!

I'm so glad I don't work in retail at this time of year! Apart from food shopping, I might not go to the shops now until the end of the year.

On line shopping is so much easier and you can do grocery shopping on line as well.

We do Woolworth's and also IGA on line shopping and it saves all the hassles of having to line up.

I now hate having to get Milk and bread in-between grocery orders.

I've used Woolies & Coles online (prefer Woolies) but I haven't tried IGA. I didn't know they did online. I'll have to tell my mum that. When I introduced her to the interweb, she wasn't in favour of online grocery shopping. I mostly shop for her. But when I'm not around, she tried it & loved it.

I see FB as a communication & information tool, much like this site is. It's an alternative way of communication.

With some people, I only see them in person & don't communicate with them in any other way. With others, it's online. Others are a combination of various ways.

There's good & bad about everything we do. I try to have more good than bad.
That is fine we are all different.

Personally I do not understand the obsession with Facebook or Twitter. The expectation from business is that I need to use one or both to be able to communicate and participate in promotions etc.

The world is an evil place and we are just making it easier for them. I visited the Lenovo website last week to look at some computers. The next day I received an email from Lenovo with something along the lines of "We know you are looking for a computer". I clicked on a link in their email and they traced what I was doing and then send me an email back. Sad.

I do not need Facebook or Twitter and to a lesser extent email. What I do need is make sure I browse the internet and at least once a day delete all cookies on machine as if I am a new person browsing their website. It is none of their business what I do.

To use why we are here as an example, I've had more success communicating with people from VA on Twitter than many people have had here talking to the VFF rep here. I haven't had good experiences with the GCC.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

I know people who use FB like you would use Twitter but are very anti Twitter.

Friend of mine who lives in Exeter (UK) recently posted this up on her Facebook Wall, showing that she managed to buy all of the items in the picture below from Marks & Spencer (apparently one of the more "upmarket" or expensive supermarket chains in the UK) for the princely sum of ten British Pounds Sterling.

UK groceries.jpg

For the complete record, she purchased:
  • sugarfree cranberry lemonade 500ml
  • sugarfree ginger beer 500ml
  • 3 x canned soups
  • 6 x fruit mince pies
  • 1 bag spinach leaves
  • 1 litre milk
  • 3 bananas
  • 6 tomatoes
  • 6 hot cross buns
  • 1 bag Maltesers

...and I should probably preface here that she works in health, is single and (obviously) leads a very healthy lifestyle! (She's not vegetarian from what I can guess / gather, though most of the food she has created and posts onto her Wall at times would be suitable for vegetarians)

But the main discussion was how much was groceries in Australia (or other countries, for that matter)? I don't think you could get everything in that list for $17 or even $20 in Australia, unless a lot of it was on special / in the Reduced To Clear basket. But to explain the discrepancy:
  • I think we get paid slightly more on average compared to in UK (not sure about, say, those receiving social security benefits), but for most professions for like-for-like jobs, you would get paid more in Australia than in UK.
  • Other things are much more expensive in the UK, e.g. renting a place to stay.
  • There are far more supermarket chains and a much larger demographic (in numbers and concentration) to target, hence ideal and intense competition ensues.

On the other hand, except for bread, milk, eggs, seasonal produce and a few other staples (flour, sugar), maybe we are "overpaying" for our groceries in Australia?

What do you all think?

Is that Lemonade half drunk already? LOL

I did notice this when I went to the US earlier this year. Same item (600ml bottle of Pepsi), same sort of store (convenience store), much more expensive in Australia. America was under $2 USD while the same bottle in Australia would have been $3 AUD & above at the same time.
