The totally off-topic thread

My 73 year old friend came to visit us at work. Now he had a heart transplant 5 years ago from a 23 year old motorbike rider.
He spends most of his "extra time" on charitable pursuits as payback for getting another chance at life. He has a very big smile and it shows us you can beat adversity.

That's great that your friend has a new lease on life, but tell me, has he taken up motorbike riding? :)

Look here: Standard selling fees

If I read that right, eBay keeps 10% (not counting any other optional fees you want).

So with Paymate and eBay fees I lose about 20%.

I have some brand new golf balls that I can probably sell for $200-$300. Not a great deal but these extortionists want a cut of $40-$60? Lets not go into a debate about it but why all these layers of extortion? Because they can?

I am going to see if I can sell them elsewhere for less than the net amount I would get from eBay. That will keep my conscious clean for a little longer. I may even donate them to others.

My goodness! What a rort!

I have just had a quick look at Paymate and I think if I sell something for $10 their take is ~$0.82! How much does eBay take?

Talk about legalised extortion. Not a bad income for doing nothing.

Any other alternatives to selling things?

I haven't read the last page (sorry if this is a duplicate), but I buy and sell a lot of furniture and other items on Gumtree. Yes its probably more popular in Sydney but it avoids the fees of ebay. I have sold on ebay as well but I have only ever had to post 2 things, everyone else collected so as gumtree now has TV ads and has been featured on a few different shows I think it is becoming more widely used.

You could consider Craigslist, the Weekend Shopper or Trading Post, I guess. I think the Weekend Shopper is free, but you need to relist frequently if your item doesn't sell.

You could also just bring stuff to Cash Converters I guess. That eliminates the guesswork as to whether someone will buy your goods, but naturally don't expect a great price (typically they will give you estimated market value minus a large cut).

I've had good success buying and selling through GumTree, well worth a look imo, I'm about to list a 4 stroke mulcher, anybody here want one?

You might have to give it away to avoid running afoul of the AFF T&Cs. ;)

Unfortunately I have no need of one.

Next two responses from me:

"What do you want for it?"

"You're dreamin'"

:p

Thanks. I shall have a look at Gumtree.

Normally don't answer private callers, but unfortunately due to some recent events I have to.

"Hello, this is Samira from telstra internet support, there is a problem with your internet connection" or some such rubbish, not bleedin' likely I tell them and hang up. Parasites, hope they get their come-uppance one day.

My thoughts are with you shellthom.

Shame you're not in ADL - my 4 stroke mulcher caught fire

What are they trying to achieve?

Apologies for asking but I don't get these types of calls.

They talk you into giving remote access and then raid your PC. Oh and they ask for a fee to cover all their hard work.

Had my first drive since my extended holiday & it felt good. I must remember to keep my fog/ditch lights on (where fitted) & turn them off at the end of the trip.

Apparently now that Sydney has a tram that actually goes somewhere of use, they are finding it to be somewhat popular!

Be careful that you only use fog lights when the visibility is poor, otherwise it is an offence to use them. So where did you go?

Depends what you call somewhere of use. It could be argued that the Casino, Convention Centre & Fish Markets have been places of note served by the light rail since 1997.

It does better service the inner west now but it could be said that it is close but not close enough to some places due to sticking to the disused freight rail corridor.
