Yeah well... some of us still are in the "race". And as much as the older generation thinks we're a bunch of non-self-sufficient softies, it's comparatively cut-throat to apply for a job these days compared to the years ago. Not to mention people working shorter time spans at companies (no more same job for 20-40 years, or rarely), contracts are frequently a year with annual review (no multi-year contracts unless it is tied to a project or programme) and a university degree is no longer a large advantage, it's usually just merely mandatory.

It still surprises my father when I tell him that my new contracts are all one year long, which is reviewed after the year. The review is usually a rubber stamp, but hearing "one year contract" or "yearly contracts" seems to equate to "lousy job".

C'est la vie, I guess.

Yep, it certainly ain't easy. Took me 60 job applications to get my current position. And people wonder why I don't quit when I'm treated like cough. Still waiting to hear back from an interview I had last October; certainly wouldn't work for people that have no respect for others....

I understand that all too well. I have a son and several nieces and nephews all in the real world !!

The points you outline are precisely why mrs.dr.ron and I made the comments we did. We know it's tough out there. Retirement is a point of relief from that battle - but then the battle becomes one with the effects of age :(.

Me and my broken leg totally agree ;)

Work is overrated.

Why bother when you could be out there playing golf on a day like today. ;)

I aim to be semi retired at 45 and fully retired at 55... Let's see how that goes. I have a plan..

I couldn't care less about Word or styles used. I can do my job though but that is not as important?

And you wouldn't be applying for a job in my team, JohnK (nor would JessicaTam for that matter!)

Expert use of Microsoft Word in and of itself isn't a primary criterion for my team, but I'd be quite suspicious if someone claims expert level knowledge of Word, and has a CV with no template or styles, and all manually overridden formatting. It calls into suspicion any other expertise claims that they make.

As I hire writers, I want to see their writing ability and their tool skills evident in their CV. If there's spelling mistakes, bad grammar, inconsistent punctuation, I take that much more seriously than non-writer-hiring-managers would. I have seen these kinds of mistakes many times, sometimes I've perhaps overlooked them, but when there's a better CV in the pile, then the mistake-laden ones will be overlooked.

Or even if there are spelling mistakes, bad grammar etc? ;)

Goodness. I've forgotten to collect a package worth 2.63 million dollars  and now I'm going to be charged $20USD for storage once I give them my bank account details....

I never knew you went to Nigeria or Burkina Faso. :)

Does anyone know of a (low or 0% interest) CC that one can transfer a personal loan balance to. Daughter says she is paying too much interest on personal loan and 'dad's bank' isn't too keen on 'lending' the cash.

This one is reputable. I don't fall for those Nigerian scams. ;)

Apparently I purchased this package from Charlotteville Texas and it is currently at the Douglas Airport. A bucket of oil maybe?

Well done. You might just be able to buy a (second?) house in Australia with $2.63 million.

Not to mention all the QFF points I'll get by using my EDR credit card. :D.

Depending on eligibility try Police Bank/ Customs bank, 0% for 9 months and the rate at the moment is 11.79% from memory

They are also amazingly helpful
