Did you end up having anything taken? So hopefully just bruised up. I take it you were attacked in a fairly remote or area with not many people (either at all and/or at the time).

Darwin, if you're up there, you're due for an appraisal...

Nope. Glasses knocked around a bit and will need replacing, but didn't lose anything. He was after my phone (called it a camera as I had taken a couple of non descript photos of a derelect building just before the incident ). Assault should be in the vision of CCTV from a train station, plus likely the thug left a nearby pub which also is required to have CCTV. No direct witnesesses. One cabbie saw the guy, but didn't see the assault AFAIK.
Police were really good and are treating it seriously. The charge of attempted robbery using violence isn't a minor one in the UK.

As some of you know, I ended up in admissions last night. Was the victim of assault with intention to rob (or maybe just attempted robbery. Or whatever charge fits best). Could be simply described as an attempted mugging with assault thrown in really. There are many morons in this world...
Wow, bad news Mal but glad that you're still in one piece! Hope you get over the effects asap.

Not nice when that happens. I was robbed in Vietnam. They slashed my bag of me in the street. A woman in Thailand had the same thing happen to her but they were amateurs. She was killed by the knife. Guess I should be glad they knew what they were doing.

Personal robberies do more than physical damage though. Hope they catch the crims for you and they do the time.

It's actually interesting that this thug just decided to hurt you and that's it. I've always had the view that if a thug doesn't get what they want from you, often the next time you're awake you'll either have lost a limb or a part of your body, or you'll be in a wooden box having never woken up.

London being London, there are cameras everywhere. Well, that's the theory anyway.......

Good to see police treating it with a modicum of gravity.

What area was that Mal?
We are all pleased you got thru this attack and lived to tell us about it.
Are you buying a lottery ticket?

That is not good. I hope all is OK.

Not sure what you mean by Word documents with only Normal style. Do you mean... no bolding, no italics, no underlining, no headings or variance in sizes, no formatting at all?

I mean not using the Styles in Word at all; having all formatting being manual overrides to Word's Normal style, so it's Normal+Bold, Normal+24pt font, etc. I turn on formatting marks, and have seen spaces used to indent, rather than paragraph formatting or even tabs!
I am harsh about that, particularly if the applicant claims expert levels of Word and their CV as a sample document does not aupport that claim. I might react differently if I were in a different profession, of course. :)

Yeah I'm OK. Black eye, three stitches below my eyebrow, some other minor scratches, and other brusing around the face.

Could be worse, and I'm back out today making the most of the beautiful sun :)

Ouch. Hope you're alright.

Mind if I send you image scanned .PDF's? ... :p

I always used .pdf. Those days are over now though. :D

I'm guessing that applying for a job to work for Katie would require submitting a CV via a .doc or .docx file rather than .pdf. Guess it would be easier to filter out the duds straight away. :)

Fanstastic.

I couldn't care less about Word or styles used. I can do my job though but that is not as important?

Katie works in a position where advanced use of Word and word processing would be an essential criterion for the job. So I could understand why that would be of paramount importance.

I guess the other point is when there is one job and 100-200 applicants, you can afford to be blithely discriminating (but not to the point of infringing on race, religion, etc.)

I am soooo glad I am retired and I don't have to know about CVs and all that stuff

How do I do multiple 'like' ;):D.

Yeah well... some of us still are in the "race". And as much as the older generation thinks we're a bunch of non-self-sufficient softies, it's comparatively cut-throat to apply for a job these days compared to the years ago. Not to mention people working shorter time spans at companies (no more same job for 20-40 years, or rarely), contracts are frequently a year with annual review (no multi-year contracts unless it is tied to a project or programme) and a university degree is no longer a large advantage, it's usually just merely mandatory.

It still surprises my father when I tell him that my new contracts are all one year long, which is reviewed after the year. The review is usually a rubber stamp, but hearing "one year contract" or "yearly contracts" seems to equate to "lousy job".

C'est la vie, I guess.

The points you outline are precisely why mrs.dr.ron and I made the comments we did. We know it's tough out there. Retirement is a point of relief from that battle - but then the battle becomes one with the effects of age :(.
