The totally off-topic thread

You and me John, just the two of us.

I only recently joined Facebook and only because there is a group I was invited to join.

Not long after I signed up, Facebook canned my account because I was using a fake identity. I suspect if they got rid of all the fakes half of facebook would be gone! (my opinion only)

That feeling arriving back in MEL from a week or so in China... go to my car.

Flat battery.

Nothing like getting a jump in the long term car park ;)

Do you use Facebook?

As a non-facebook user, there is one aspect in particular about facebook that I think about, given that you know the activities, photos, whereabouts etc of people on facebook
When you finally meet or catch-up with that person, is the question "so what have you been upto?" now redundant?

I don't use Facebook to that extent that your question would be redundant. Work stuff doesn't generally go onto Facebook either.

Only to check up on my son's antics. I don't post on my facebook and I only have my son and niece as friends. My other son won't "friend" me
I have deleted a few friends because I was tired of their mindless postings. One in particular who only posted about her wonderful travels and her shopping exploits. Never worked once she got married.

If you were in a bank wearing your very nice solitaire diamond ring and bank robbers burst in, would you consider swallowing the diamond ring? If so, would it do much damage to you on the way through? I was thinking about this today when I put my ring between my teeth to put on hand cream.

That's why young people are abandoning FB - it's not cool to have the adults read what you say. They may be hiding their comments elsewhere - what is the latest thing anyway? .

(much to JohnK's pleasure) - hanging out at the park playing sports and chatting there. Parents are too busy hanging out online to figure it out.

I enjoy using social media, including Facebook. For me it has been on the whole a very positive experience far outweighing the negative aspects.

Adults can only read Facebook if the owner allows them to. And they can be "unfriended" silently too so I don't think that's the reason.

Diamond ring? I'd hide mine somewhere.

God I hate that - just stand in front of them and shush them - you are quite entitled to do so. Open air Skype convos and those tools who walk around with Bluetooth ear pieces having loud convos with the fairies really p*ss me off and I will not tolerate them doing so in a public environment - just plain selfish and rude - we all have times where we need to make / receive calls but at least go outside or go seek out a private corner somewhere.

...and why are their conversations so jolly mindless? Like the rest of the world wants to hear all the details about their social life......there seems to be no sense of boundaries or privacy. If I want to hear their stupid conversation I'll go and join in, but I DON'T, so DON'T inflict it on me.
Rant over, I will go back to being a grumpy old bird!

I think the worse thing about Facebook these days is that there is alternate and exclusive information not available via other media, hence almost "forcing" (for want of a better word) you to join. A recent example - Amex referrals. Lots of special offers for hotels, airlines, supermarket and others too.

Social media is pretty much the first to break news stories these days and have the entire world aware of it within seconds.

I totally agree. I have met some awesome people as a direct result. I can keep in touch with as many people or as few as I want.

I have friends in various places around the world & social media is a great way of keeping in contact with them.

My work colleagues & I have a secret group where we can organise swaps & the like. The atmosphere in my depot is so much friendlier as a result. We spend so much time here (and we are solo when actually driving) that on breaks & down time, quality human interaction is important.

One thing that annoys me is the connection between the various social groups. Eg Trip Advisor connects with Facebook. I like keeping things in discrete categories. And I'm sick of my games asking me to contact friends on Facebook to get extra lives etc. ;)

JohnK try being 60 plus in a store like DJs in Perth suburbs if you want to get perfectly ignored.

I went shopping at Myer Marion (SA) with the old man last Xmas. He ended up ringing their listed number and asked for some customer service.

A minute later a very sheepish employee appeared.

Totally agree. There are heaps of websites that ask/allow you to login with your Facebook details rather than registering with an email address. I guess that then gives Facebook and whoever else has paid for database access, to contact (read spam) all your "friends" with their marketing spiels too. I can't recall using my Facebook login for any other website; Big Brother is watching….
