What moral, practical or ethical obligation did the national Australian broadcaster have with respect to providing television programming services to Asia? (Let alone as opposed to any other area in the world?)

The ABC is seen as a generally accurate and fair broadcaster which provides regional news as well as Australian content. Every country that wants to be seen as participating and influential in its local area has a responsibility to be an honest broker and provide a media service.

Australian national radio was sold off by the previous Liberal government and now the frequency spouts hard core Christian religious propaganda. We lost a valuable resource and heaps of credibility when that news service was ceased. No lessons learnt at all.

Those qualities you mention should be an objective of the respective broadcasters, not just the ABC, and certainly the ABC does not and should not need to triumph itself as a crusader in that regard. Ergo why should it have to be obligated to remain as an Asian broadcaster. I think that's an unfair obligation really, and this is further compounded by the fact that the broadcaster and its decision makers have very little control over its funding, let alone strategic direction.

It probably does not help that the PM believes that the ABC is not on "Team Australia" - so be it, just be thankful the said person has not sliced the knees off Auntie... just yet.

Besides, the ABC could use a little bit of a refresher in accuracy and fairness, but suffice to say if everyone got a report card the ABC is getting the highest grades... so far.

Certainly fairer and more accurate then the commercial broadcasters in AU.

Not everyone feels they are getting their 0.08c worth!

I put them in the same bias camp as that ever decreasing Fairfax operation.

I cringe every time I hear "Team Australia".

It's in the Australian zeitgeist since the installation of the newest federal leadership, so you either respect it or you're not on the Team and thus not supporting your country!

Look on the bright side, at least there's no avatar of Hockey in a jumpsuit / cape with budgie smugglers on the outside...

I wonder what would happen if Australian public transport went to an open gate system very similar to many parts of Europe.
More rorting? More abuse?

I am surprised by the number of people that don't touch on or off regurlarly. I think the fines are not harsh enough.

Slow day at the office in the new job?

So how does it "work" in Europe and how would you not ensure that kind of behavioural culture?

Making fines harsher may or may not work, particularly with school children who evade fares, particularly those who plead the duty of care excuse to get on transport.

Kind of. Should go faster but need access to everything to do anything. Managed to get some literature for this review I need to do, but that's taken a bit.

Now I've just taken off work early because I need to go back to the government offices to get a document.

Ah yes, know the feeling - why is it never streamlined when starting a new role. You often end up sitting there for 2 weeks doing sod all!

My first deadline is in two weeks. Time is not on my side.

They say that the Swiss bureaucracy is designed not to be fair or simple, it is designed for procedural efficiency (likely from the point of view of the government). But they also say as long as you do the right thing, you will not be punished. That said, being ignorant is regarded as doing the wrong thing.
