Earplugs / grommets.
Earplugs minimise noise a lot - they won't block them out, though. Given it is loud enough (e.g. shouting) or you recognise it, you'll still "hear" things (but a lot less than without them, of course).
Adding layers, e.g. good ear muffs, will further minimise the effect.
Of course most people's antidote for listening to noise they don't like, is to put on noise cancelling headphones and play noises that they do like.
