And Singapore/Malaysia/much of Thailand are closer or just as close to the equator, yet somehow they don't seem to have the same incidence of skin cancer. Could it be something to do with many Q'landers just not getting the correlation between UV exposure and skin cancer.

I know firsthand here in TH that they absolutely *hate* having a tan and will not only lather on SPF50, but also wear long sleeved shirts, balaclavas and hats whenever they work out in the sun. Maybe their aversion to tanning, is helping reduce their skin cancer risk?

Unfortunately I believe it is because they think the whiter the skin the better. Their pharmacies and beauty stores carry lots of "whitening" products. Their thoughts of skin cancers arent part of the decision.

Yes, that is indeed the reason why; I was using that aversion to getting darker, as an example that the "slip, slop, slap" theory, is quite possibly why they don't have such a high rate.

Regardless of their reasons, ensuring they protect themselves against the harsh sun, seems to be working; can't speak about the other countries mentioned, as I don't have firsthand knowledge.

I do remember shooting at the Conrad Bali once, and a Japanese tourist was lying in the sun, but covered from head to toe in several towels - just her (??) sunglasses could be seen. Made me wonder why she actually bothered. ;)

Efudex is what I have for some skin issues. It is prescription only to knock off stuff in between visits to the dermatologist.

I used Efudex about 2 years ago and it was not a good experience. Skin blistered and turned red and was not a good sight. I will not use it again.
I visit my skin cancer guy every 6 months

When a person has numerous warrants out for their arrest or has overstayed their visa, it's probably not a good idea to draw attention to yourself on public transport.

I'm expecting an example of the former to appear in the media tomorrow (Thursday).

I had a good experience with Aldara cream removing a bcc on my nose a few years ago, better than another excision and subsequent scar.

I remember reading that some avoid tanning, as a tan is the sign of a peasant that works in the fields.

That's the one I used :D

One would think being a huge David Eddings fan that I could remember :o

Large tropical thunderstorm here in Negombo (just north of Colombo), news stations reporting possibly over 300 missing following a land slide east of here, not good news at all.

Sri Lanka landslides: At least 16 dead, hundreds missing as a tea-growing region is swamped - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

my first thought was tragically selfish "bugger i hope it doesn't screw my holiday that i have finally got Mrs C and 2 of the delinquents C to come on" leaving tomorrow
then my second thought was of the people and the likely difficulties in tea country of rescue , then having some knowledge of the likely medical and prehospital response in Sri Lanka of the remote likelihood of any survivors surviving

Puts the holiday into perspective really

Excuse my ignorance - would that be the Sugar Shaker?

Yes it is. Ugliest building in town. So better to be in it, looking out at the great views! :)

The staff here are very nice. I had a very long chat with the manager. This HI is not going to another chain anytime soon according to him.

I thought it was to avoid looking like the people from the Isaan region as they are regarded as the peasants?

Who said racism only exists in Western countries?

"Whiter skin is better" would be the (massive generalisation) prevailing thinking in most Asian nations.

And I doubt anyone said racism only exists in Western countries- have you ever read the letters section in a SIN newspaper? So many racist letters, especially against mainland Chinese.

I actually understand their concerns and POV but wouldn't pen my name to them in a paper!

Missed you by that much! Checked out Tuesday - my first "shaker" stay ... the staff are excellent.

I hope he is right but given IBA recently moved management from IHG to Mecure for Cooinda, I am not so sure. As it stands its a good example of indigenous business doing well. I think I have had over 20 stays at the shaker, yet to set foot on any of those balconies.

Straitman, am not very tech savvy - could you clarify different browser? If I use a different device - eg a laptop and a desktop on the same wireless connection, is that then considered a different browser? If not, how do we access a different browser?
I use three different browsers. Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox. Not Internet Explorer as I use a Mac computer.
