All sick leave taken here has to be justified with a medical certificate which states the exact condition you were suffering. This is basically to ascertain that your condition was as such that you really were incapacitated in such a way that working was not ideal or impossible.

If you know your doctor really well, I suppose you could still make an embellished or phony-baloney excuse that doesn't sound suspicious. Claiming a sickie because you got really drunk last night would be frowned upon, because the view is that you can avoid getting drunk much more than you can, say, avoid getting the flu.

A pattern of sickies with no clear medical basis can get you audited and summarily dismissed.

Since a visit to a doctor here can be quite expensive, depending on how badly sick you are and/or your medical insurance plan, you might be better off just riding through the illness at work.

Oh John. Did I touch a nerve?

Don't judge. Sick leave is there to be used and should be used.

Doctors appointments! Should people schedule these in their own time?

Here is a pet hate of mine. You have a cold, coughing, runny nose and you still go into the office? Why? To share it with everyone? Anyone that comes into work in this condition should be sent home immediately.

I gave other examples earlier. Headache. Stiffness. Swollen fingers, wrist, arms. Stomach aches.

Should I just be brave and soldier on? No prizes for unused sick leave.

Dont forget "Mental health day". Its the new "RSI". As distinct from someone suffering from depression.

clazman does your Perth office have a "departures lounge" for those regular Monday and Friday "sick day" long weekenders?

Do people really come to the emergency room for a (assumed) mild illness to get a day off work?
Mild illness? Is there such a thing? We are all different and are affected differently by illnesses. What's OK by you to go to work is not OK for someone else.

Hangover is good enough reason to be sick and not go to work.

Anyway pharmacies are able to issue certificates for minor ailments these days.

1216 hours or 30.4 weeks sick leave available here:shock:

And that's what could be very useful should someone holding that amount get a chronic illness or injury - which, let's face it, is more likely as we get older. But, hopefully, it's just good insurance that never needs to be used.

On the other hand, someone who has made a point of using their 'entitlement' year-by-year as they have gone along no longer has that as a safeguard should they have the misfortune to get a truly debilitating illness or injury.

Remember - in many work places sick leave is not coughulative.

Many in such environments have the philosophy of "use it or lose it" ...

Exactly!!!

Looks like Ed Cowan could be ready for a Test call-up if they decide to drop Watson or Rogers. Back-to-back centuries (147 & 158) has him in really good form.

No chance. He doesn't play for NSW.

Some work places insist on "pooled" sick leave... one of those Aussie initiatives that makes this country the land of [-]opportunity[/-] entitlement.

I worked in my career job for 36 years and had 3 x single sick days in all that time

.

I would have no idea what my sick leave is; I always though that you are entitled to 10 days sick leave per year and that it didn't accumulate.

I have had around 3 days sick leave in 18 months while in WA, only 1 day where I didn't come to work, as I just didn't feel well enough to even get out of bed.

If staff are sick then I wish they didn't come to work to spread their germs, some of us can catch certain colds faster than others.

I agree that you shouldn't use up your sick leave because its available, but then there is no way I am going to be as healthy as JohnM.

In 2007 I was off work for 10 days and spent 3 days of that in hospital as I had caught pneumonia in summer.

4 weeks Max can be accrued at our work. We all have income protection insurance in case something serious comes along.

Friday evening for me shall be at Amanda's on the Edge Restaurant at Pokolbin - work Christmas party. Plenty of wine to be had.

Too many people living to Work rather then working to live these days.

One ex-boss, worked himself into the ground that by the time he was 49 he had a heart attack. Now a couple of years later, he is selling his business (over 3 years) has resumed smoking, gaining weight, exercising less, working longer hours. He will probably have a fatal heart attack or stroke at work.

Also annoying is fellow workers constantly coming to work sick, not sniffles but full blown colds/flu's. I told off one manger, that his coming in sick will lead to others getting sick and more lost productivity then him staying at home for one day. A day or 2 later most of the department is home sick but he is still coming in sick.

Unfortunately some of us are sicker more often than others.

And the company is still miles in front with my productivity.

All this talk on sick leave made me look at my payslip, seems I have 1680 hours of sick leave or 42 weeks

Hopefully I will never use much of this. Only 3 off days past 8 years.

I guess I enjoy work and the people I work with to not want to stay at home!

except lurk on here to plan my trips

I rely on the people I work with and they me. If I am not up to it I don't go to work, and I don't expect other staff members to either.

Just my 2c

In the modern time of political correctness you need to be careful what you say, but some people do seem to be sick quite frequently.

FWIW, I rarely use sick leave. If I am sick I will work from home (or the hotel) and occasionally take sick leave.

The longest period of sick leave was when I had a planned surgery.

Reminds me of the last time I had a rather bad (man) flu. I could barely speak, but as I was working remotely I didn't have to take time off. Unfortunately I spent a good 8 hours a day 2 days straight on back2back conf calls, so it wasn't much fun
