Hence the comment about placing an excessive burden on the health care system. It is a perfectly valid letter that applies equally to australia. My wife had to have a doctor's visit for a note for being absent from a 3 or 4 hour shift for a migraine. A known medical condition that occurs on a regular predictable basis, that she rarely takes time from work to handle (as evidenced by her sick leave balance). So we paid the non-bulk billing practice more than what she would've earned for the shift to get a sick note for a few hours when the employer knows damn well that she was definitely unfit for work.

I guess the real question is, are you always concerned about being flooded? Sun during the day, and a storm late in the day and overnight wouldn't concern me, but are the storms impinging into the day hours resulting in worrying all the time?

As amaroo says, depends on where you live and the upgrades to stormwater drains. Our home is not an issue, but my work (Fortitude Valley) is on the low side of the suburb and as I have posted in the past month, our road has flooded twice. Virgin HQ floods every time there is a decent heavy rain (particularly when Breakfast Creek is already at high tide)

A car travels at a constant speed of 70 km/h. What is the net external force acting on the car?

This can't be that difficult for a first year engineer to solve, right?

Depends on the size of the net or who's pushing?

Well I'm only a dentist but if I remember from school when it's not accelerating F = ma = m x 0m/s2 = 0N

Anyway i'd recommend getting a car that can accelerate like a scalded cat

That's in the horizontal direction ~ vertically, there's gravity in there, too. But of course if it's an African Swallow you might need to know the wingspan....

Are Drs notes still required for non unsual absences these days? (Ie not Friday/Monday/PH timing). We haven't required them for ages.

I'm allowed 15 days a year. 6 of them can be casual (no certificate) but there's rules for consecutive days. Also for shiftworkers, we need them either side of days off.

The net force in the vertical direction is 0. Assuming it is travelling on a uniform infinite plane with gravity acting perpendicular to the plane.

Doctor, I have a "migraine" or "gastro"......need a certificate for work;) No doctor can easily dispute these 2 illnesses!

Some kids are hard to impress. Waiting to disembark from QF9 and the pilot came out of the coughpit and asked a little kid standing at the forward steps to the J cabin if he wanted to tour the coughpit. The kid pretty much screws up his face and lets out a defiant no. I guess, like everyone else, he was pretty eager to get off the plane.

That's a major issue and there are a few of them, including within the healthcare sector.

How does a Dr handle malingerers? You might know they aren't sick but just want a day off. Does a Dr sign the certificate?

I thought this issue had passed anyway with personal leave provisions of three days pa and as part of the normal 10 day sick leave package.

Many doctors in my experience simply write "due to a medical condition" on the certificate. On the form I fill in, it asks me the nature of illness so I write "as per medical certificate."

Recently I took a day off - I was so sore after ice skating for the first time as an adult. I didn't even fall over! I didn't go to the doctor as it was a Sunday but should have had a certificate because I had a day off the day before. So I put "sporting related muscle soreness" on the form which wasn't questioned.

Laziness is... not ironing your shirts because you know it will be covered with a pullover and a jacket, and neither is likely to be (or at least it is unlikely that both will be) taken off all day long.

Welcome to the club (when I don't wear a suit to work in winter!).

Ha.. in the UK you can have 7 days off before you need to 'prove' it. Not that I've ever had to do so.........

Experiencing train delays already.

Come over here and then start whinging about it :) Breathe of wind? Delays.

Living in Melbourne, there is always that idea that living in QLD is the ultimate ("beautiful one day, perfect the next"). Has the weather changed dramatically in the past 10 years or so, because it seems the dream dies off a little more every year.
I have been here 7 years.

That statement was a huge marketing lie. Middle of December and I am cold. The past few days sweat was dripping off me. No power again last night.

Should have chosen the contract job at Avon with a ~1 hour commute each way.

Malingerers are usually (but not always) those who have exhausted all normal sick leave provisions.
Personally I will only sign a sick certificate if I believe there is a medical need for one beyond covering the time the patient spent in the Emergency Dept.

There are a few more legitimate "excuses".

Depression. Swelling. Discomfort in the abdomen caused by inflammation in spine or lower back. There are days where I am not feeling well and I cannot go to the doctor. Especially waiting to see doctor.

I wouldn't want to work for a company that wants a certificate for 1 days absence.

Oh. And I will use up my 10 days sick leave each year. No prizes for having 100 days of unused sick leave when you leave the company.

Do people really come to the emergency room for a (assumed) mild illness to get a day off work?
