The totally off-topic thread

Expensive day today.

Our three year old blood test machine ($18k) failed, outside its two year warranty (of course).
"Ok, s*** happens, how much to repair?"

"Standard minimum repair cost $4,644. Ninety day warranty on parts and labour - you pay shipping MEL-SYD-MEL. Or you can purchase an extended maintenance agreement for $6400 for four years."

"Take up the agreement and we'll replace your current dead machine with a brand new machine. You'll never see your old machine again."
"Or not, as you wish, and we'll fix your current machine (for at least $4644, but might be extra with parts once we have it back in the workshop)."

Hmmm... coriander thinks.... there's newer machines on market, maybe I just repair, sell it and move to an alternate brand machine.

"No problem, dr coriander, but be aware that we do not offer subsequent owner(s) a maintenance agreement, and the 90 day warranty on current repair applies only to current owner."

"Ok, what if I sell the practice - does maintenance agreement continue with new owner?"
"No. Read the "No assignment" bit in clause #3 - you will need to pay out full four years of agreement.
We *may* transfer the agreement to the new practice owner if you are retiring."
"Oh, can I have that in writing?"
"No. There *may* be an offer made. You have always been a good customer, so I wouldn't worry about it."
"Ok, so I keep the machine, but lease it to the new owner."
"Yes, as long as you abide by Clause #2 stating that you will be responsible for the use and maintenance of the machine and that it remains at current premises."

Why do I feel that I've been royally screwed over?

Sorry I posted my belief that AFF is a form of social media. Seems to have caused a storm in a teacup. I'm sure there are bigger matters that warrant discussion.
What's wrong with discussion?

I am simply questioning that AFF/Flyertalk be considered social media along with Facebook/Twitter.

A similar discussion would be trying to compare Test match cricket, One dayers and mickey mouse cricket. The first one is pure cricket. The last one is a joke and should not be referred by the name of cricket.

This is such a hoot. If you received the "community newsletter" last week, I had a few lines about my favourite threads. BUT my first comments were:
Will I get shot down if I say AFF for me is like Facebook – but for grown-ups?

They decided not to include that line, and now here we are discussing it.

I had a tonne of empathy ... until I worked out ... VET* :D

* only joking - my two ladies love you guys/girls.

Lets draw an analogy, or perhaps a metaphor or whatever the grammar thread tells me is correct. (Sir Joh didn't buy me a fancy edumucation)

Just like people who don't know how to play golf have No Freedom to Intone (NFI), is it true that people who don't use social media have No Freedom to Intone as well?

When I hear someone referring to social media they are referring to Facebook/Twitter/MySpace etc.

So if by definition sites such as AFF, Flyertalk are social media then including Facebook/Twitter/MySpace in the same category is extremely misleading. Chalk and cheese.

I'll stick to my interpretation thanks.

I'd recommend Austraian consumer law. In particular, what is the reasonable working life of a blood test machine - fit for purpose of whatever. Much as apple's one year warranty for their products is overridden because their products should last longer than 1 year, I imagine an $18000 blood test machine can be expected to last longer than 2 years.

Don't worry about it ...
It would seem that only one person thinks that some social media isn't social media.

Please stop trying to correct me. I don't have to accept anyone's definition of social media.

How does one play gold?

That's F'ing GOLD!!! PMSL!!!

Don't correct me, But I'll correct you.

Oh and for your edification, you can reject whatever you like. It doesn't mean you're not wrong. Tell me again how you can admit when you're wrong.

The fact you participate in off-topic threads on such forums, firmly makes it a form of social media.

I participate in social media as long as Facebook/Twitter/MySpace are not referred to as Social media. It really is that simple. AFF and Facebook/Twitter cannot both be labelled in the same category. It makes no sense.

At least to me it doesn't make sense but there are those that think participating on Facebook/Twitter is important. Sorry....

AFF/FT/Whirlpool etc are forms of social media, Facebook, Twitter (MySpace - what's that ?? :p ) are also forms of social media. Whether it makes sense to you or not does not change the fact that they are.

You participate in social media but only those areas of it that you feel comfortable with.
Why it should make any difference to you that the facts are distorted or changed to suit your continued participation here is something I can't quite understand

If you are following the discussion it all started with the number 1 thing that makes men happy

"Lots of followers on social media"

Couldn't be further from the truth. Couldn't care less about popularity. I don't do social media. Why is that so difficult to comprehend?

Why do we all have to agree with stupid definitions?

This reminds me of the discussion a while back where someone was asking post after post why I didn't think airlines like Qantas were 'public transport'. The answer was simply that I didn't consider them public transport (with the then unstated joiner- "and so bloody what if I don't"? :)).

FWIW: I too don't consider AFF 'social media' - if it was, I'd have to stop participating. And those that don't like what I do and don't consider - please see the above ;)

..., and for those hung up on the meaning of various words and phrases, I think I brought this out before:

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master — that's all.'

Here's something mildly interesting (to me). I'm currently at the nearest point on land which is the anti-pole (or antipode)to where I live:

Anyone been to the actual antipode location to where they live? (Kiwis have a better chance than Aussies!)

Myspace was one of the first big social networking sites, until the rise of Facebook overtook it. It still exists, but is now owned by Murdoch's Limited News.

Re the Social Media definition. If a definition isn't invented when 'something' exists, does that mean the 'something' cant be described by that definition?

Actually I think Social Media is a Key driver of society and Government today. So fundamental to everyones daily life. Twin edged sword.

I went to Europe from Sydney in 1976 on the good ship MS Taras Shevchenko, pretty much in a straight line from Curacao to Southampton, which would have gone very close. We were meant to go to the Azores, but didn't :(
