In Memoriam - Dave Proctor. I'm sure some will know him. He was on both AFF & FT (thadocta was his handle), plus a range of other FF related websites.

Many thanks to Bundy Bear who alerted me yesterday after seeing mentions in his FB feed. We're awaiting further confirmation.

Had a red wine for Dave last night

I advised QF WP of the Facebook post and wanted to get him to see whether I was missing something, and it was confirmed by one of his family today.

His was the post that explained the origins of WP SG etc in the abbreviations thread.

Sad to hear. If I recall, I met Dave at the 1st FT AGM. Sad news. John.

It was most likely at the 2003 first Flyertalk QF AGM, that I first met a bunch of Fters for the first time and we then formalized the different abbreviations. WP, SC, PS, and NB.

There were 9 of us at that first gathering and sad to read that one of the group has died. :(

Last spoke to him at the 2015 FT AGM/Hangar tour. ..

RIP ...

I last spoke to Dave at the 2015 AGM and he was also in attendance for the 2008 when we was on the flight up from Sydney on QF175.

I seem to remember Dave being more of a beer drinker, so I will have one of them in his honour.

Have just downloaded HERE to Nexus 7 tablet, hoping to use as GPS and for offline maps on forthcoming trip. However at their download maps site i see Asia is 6,398.3MB, and Europe is 10,946.8MB, which totals 17,345.1MB which I understand is about 16.94 GB, which is rather more than my old tablet's total capacity.

Does this sound correct.

I was hoping to use the tablet for its larger screen rather than galaxy S3 with additional storage. Any suggestions appreciated.

Australian women's T20 team have beaten the English in the semi-final by 5 runs. Meg Lanning with 55 was the difference and the English middle order collapsed as usual

Click on Asia, choose the countries you actually require. Same for Europe. Each country is only a few hundred MB (except India)

THANKS! Have just made the fact known to my colleagues sitting around me ;)

On BBC news last night they were harping on about how the English team was undefeated up till this match, so that made it even more pleasurable for me

Though the general view of sports commentators is that the team were very very lucky to win, more as a result of an English collapse than good play on our side.
Not to take anything away from them, a win is a win but certainly not one of their best games.

Maybe a harder day in the office after the Men's result?

Walked down to reception at my usual Sydney hotel this morning. The lady whose wedding ring I had in my pocket for a few hours was sitting in reception! Good to catch up after a few years.

What were the circumstances of the England collapse?

Interesting that Australian womens cricket/soccer/netball are consistently worldclass but don't raise the same interest/$$$ as their male counterparts (yes blokes dont play netball).
There seems to be a chicken or the egg type of debate going on. They don't get media coverage so they dont get exposure or sponsorship, but the audience is significantly less so there is less media coverage and sponsorship.

I can understand men not watching womens sports as a rule but why don't women in general support the sisterhood?.

Recent government ads to encourage girls to be sporty (actually to just move) more or less describes the situation.

Competitions that my kids are involved all age divisions (schoolkids ages) consistently encounter female entries at 50% that of male entries.

Not that sure, only going on what the papers said which was the Australian win was more a result of some poor playing by England than brilliant play by Australia.
Whatever caused the collapse (they went from 1 for 89 chasing 132 to 7 for 117) it was still a win for Australia and there have been many men's matches won similarly. As I said a win is a win and good luck to them.

My god parents daughter had a stroke on Monday night (thankfully not on her mothers birthday which was the day before when she was looking good), so the end is hastening I think. She's lost speech and all movement in her right side (as expected). Got my tickets to CBR booked and now just moving the dates.
Unfortunately having had experience (my mother) with this a few suggestions that surprisingly the 'experts' (Prince of Wales head of neurology down) never suggested nor had used.
  • Typically we (humans) over-rely on verbal speech to communicate - BIG MISTAKE
  • Depending on stroke severity recovery can be near 100%
  • VERY VERY likely she can communicate with non-verbal means that require very little physical exertion

What I devised within hours of severe stroke (mistake made by PoW hospital after mum {medical experience from WW2} called ambulance saying pain radiating up and down the right side of my body, think I am having a stroke then discharged, stroke within 10 minutes of discharge - long sad story of repeated medical errors) where PoW said stroke so severe no chance of recovery, let her go.

  • She'd had a stroke not necessarily an IQ devaluation to zero
  • So talking in normal calm voice (so many people raise their voices as though the person has become deaf) said "Try to close both your eyes really tight and then keep them shut until I say open them."
  • It took her a few seconds to totally close them and after five seconds I said to open them - immediately open.
  • Then "Try to close your mouth really tight and then keep it shut until I say to open it."
  • Instantly mouth snapped shut.
  • So my response, "You can still talk to me can't you?" - left side of face smile.

I explained to her that we'd use this method, 'eyes' for yes and 'mouth' for no to talk and answer questions.

Despite apparent total loss of speech, with mum she would say 'djuba, djuba, djuba' when she tried to talk. However if she was asked to count to ten or say the alphabet - she could quite clearly as it apparently uses a different part of the brain.

Again the happiness it brought her from being able to say something 'correctly' was huge. Any win, no matter how small, is invaluable.

I'm not suggesting that you or your God parents inundate her with 'do this do that' but from my experience the relief visible for both my mother and those around her was immense and started to get accurate responses from the nursing staff to improve her situation.

Here's hoping!

Seriously? I try to stay out of the gender debate in sport but.

For starters the 2 levels of cricket are not the same. The best female Australian test cricketer would struggle to get a game in 2nd grade club cricket but more likely 3rd or 4th grade would be her level. The majority of her team mates would not make club cricket. There is very little interest in club cricket.

As for soccer, rugby league, rugby union, Australian rules etc the men are bigger, faster, stronger.

And I watched Jools Holland last night make the point that women's tennis was more entertaining because of the finese and skills used over just power.

I think you've overrated the ability of club cricket players.
I fully support my cousin who played soccer for the Australian under 18 or 21 women's team. And my daughter who has played for the school AFL team and soccer team and interschool athletics. but she doesn't like javelin that much she's afraid she might spear someone. (under 12s?)

Bigger, Faster, Stronger doesn't necessarily = more entertaining. Especially in sports that required finesse and skill just as much as speed and strength.

Thanks

Women make up a little more than half of the population, and therefore have the potential to influence ratings, media coverage and sponsorship. But it seems from very general observations within family and friends that women do not have the same level of interest in promoting/watching sports as their male counterparts. I am sure if women flexed their consumer muscles, taking over the TV controller and directing viewing away from men's football, cricket etc then ultimately the market might react.

Don't forget woman’s basketball.

Enough female sport on ABC which no one watches.

Sure that can happen and sports like flicking marbles could become extremely popular.

I can just see the future now. Let's create some new sports where men and women can compete equally without a gender gap. Tiddlywinks sounds exciting. Then no one feels left out.
