The totally off-topic thread

A considerable number of posts concerning house prices, and some related discussion, have been moved to the housing affordability discussion thread:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ousing-affordability-discussion-68657-15.html

It could be argued that some of the posts that were moved were not about housing affordability, but broader discussion of work/jobs etc. Perhaps that thread should be renamed to "Wide ranging discussions on housing, jobs and the ongoing tensions between Boomers and Millenials".

Now its confusing to read but we will get over it.

I did like Toms reference that the Off Topic Thread was getting like Facebook; surprisingly I check Facebook and AFF Off topic thread when I wake up in the morning.

I think you learn more from reading the TOTT than Facebook.

Well in a conceivable future, teachers might also go the way of the dodo. Reminds me of a DS9 episode.

I thought that reality was much, much closer; say, almost now? After all, most parents think their kids are pretty well off with just Google anyway, so who needs a teacher?

In seriousness, I think we are some way off replacing human teachers, though having bad or ineffective teachers certainly doesn't help the profession's cause. Even teaching technology subjects, I'm finding that I'm overestimating the technical abilities / intuition of most of my students, even though they kick my backside skill-wise in other arenas.

Received a letter in the mail today; saying that my vote wasn't recorded.
price is $58.50 not sure why I made the effort to walk 2 miles to vote.

Ouch. There's no right of appeal for this either of I'm correct?

You'd think there'd be a right of appeal, otherwise - as much as it would be stupid for the AEC to be unscrupulous - they could just write a whole bunch of fines willy-nilly?

Now who has the burden of proof and how one proves that they really were voting is a different thing... Stat Dec? With a witness? More like, if one was there when the rolls were marked (you hand over your ID), how is it possible they did not check off the name, which is what they must do before handing over the ballot papers?

Has been on the news that this is a scam. That is not the penalty.

How does it work? Do they have a bogus address, BPAY setup or URL where you can send a cheque / pay the fine?

Actually just had a re-read of the notice, looks genuine, its from 19 March when I registered for pre polling as I was going to be away in New Zealand.

Just not my day today.
Crazy traffic.Get every red light.Idiots galore on the road.
Go to fill up-tanker has just arrived and stayion closed.Go to the next and get rudest operator yet.
Cant get details of where I am staying for work tomorrow night and leave ~ 0800.
Get notice to pick up kindle from Officeworks at 1830.Open till 2000.But they have moved since I was last there.
Find it and go to click and collect-told girl has just gone home.Well find someone else.
Leaving nearly get wiped out by ute and trailer going through red light.
Then nearly collect 2 young kids on bikes, without lights and bike path beside road anyway.
Now ATO wont except my BAS statement online or let me pay the BAS.
Got to get better tomorrow.

Sounds like one of my days drron. Hang in there tomorrow could get better but no guarantee. ;)

We've received letter in past and did not pay fine. All four of us went to vote but only 3 marked off.

If the letter was sent by the AEC or something, then surely you can look up the AEC's details online then call them to verify the fine. Then you can work out why the fine was sent and/or how you could otherwise prove you don't deserve the fine.

So it's not legally enforceable? So what's the point of that particular law then?

drron that was a sign. You need to pay the BAS on a credit card but no smooth talking to my Svetlana on the ATO hot line.
Had two small trucks in the 3 to 5 tonne range fly thru the same set of red lights on successive mornings at close to 80 km speed. I was very lucky and I know it.

Just not my day today..............Got to get better tomorrow.
Good grief - don't tell me you are going start posting FML or such?

Going hungry or thirsty tonight? Sleeping in a secure room in a warm bed? Not that bad after all huh? ;)

Any lousy excuse will get one off the fine - you were sick in bed etc. Just like with the early voters - supposed to be a good reason (such as travel and not near ANY booth) but not enforced.

And no ID required when you vote. You just state your name and address. As for not getting checked off - easy - they rule the line through some-one else. Human error, just like many things.

Not if you have voted. Why should I pay a fine when I have voted but receive a fine due to incompetence? Tough luck?
