The totally off-topic thread

I was told today that I talk too much! It seems not everyone wants to hear every thought that I have. Downside (is there an upside?), I thought that the person who said this to me was a 'good friend'. Am I wrong in feeling aggrieved?

Oh well, life goes on and I'll try to consider other people's feelings when I engage in small talk.

I suffer from the urge to talk too much and have to consciously make the effort to button the lip (not always successfully). I think it is natural to feel a bit hurt by your friend's comment but I think (with the head not the heart) that it was probably done for the best of intentions.
I remember Pushka telling me to shut up when she was trying to take a photo - apparently every one she took I had my mouth open :)
I have to work on it as I know it is a failing.

Sometimes, it's not that what you say is wrong or not worth listening to.

I have / had the same problem. I talk a lot. As people know here on AFF, I'm a chronic for long posts (still really have to work on this). The problem is that the more you talk, the less you actually engage with people. At least anecdotal observations have shown that the people who are regarded as the most interesting are not those that necessarily talk well, but rather listen.

This is why when I chat with someone, even if I'm giving my opinion / learned opinion / expert opinion, I'll either tell myself to keep it short, or try and interject the talk somehow to get the other person to start talking (for example, I might go, "...but that's just my opinion - what do you think?"). Sometimes there's nothing wrong with not giving all the details, because if they want to know more, they will ask, and that will help bridge the conversation and promote rapport.

I have found that if I (or others in some cases) talk long enough in some situations, it has the opposite effect of communication and rather has just become annoying, no matter how well one spoke or how important the message is.

This all becomes more important in many arenas these days due to, on average, shortening attention spans.

Obviously, this doesn't necessarily apply in all instances, at all times. Lectures, podcasts, valedictorian speeches, eulogies, church mass... these can be lengthy without a break, though suffice to say even a good lecture will use other devices to help "break" and engage, e.g. humour to evoke a laugh from the audience.

Sometimes it's better to hear the more "brutal" advice from a good friend than someone you don't know. Someone you don't know is more likely to be diplomatic and not tell you, but regard you in an inferior light all the same. That may not matter to you in general, but it can be a matter depending on the circumstances.

And there we go... anat0l, the post is too long... :)

Oh dear. I remember that. St. Patrick's Day ball I think? Both dressed in green, it is an icky colour for me but it really suits you. Except they took a photo against a green background. Pretty sure I have your photo somewhere......

I looked like the jolly green leprechaun from memory! Ditched that gown. I think your green was quite attractive.

Just have to learn how to manage stuff. And hope I don't take too many risks in the process. And use online support groups (that are private) comprising of people who are going through exactly the same.
Unfortunately I gave up a long time ago and took way too many risks in the process. Still paying for those risks now but this is a totally different ball game. I am now not in control and at the mercy of my stupid rotten luck that has been following me around well before I was born.

AFF is my support group and has been quite good for a long time. Many people open up about their issues and you can see how they go about handling the issues they are faced.

The Expo light rail line from Santa Monica to the city of Los Angeles is proving to be very popular. Walk up the platform to the front of the train to get a seat on busy days. It is a really good way to get to shows/events at Staples Center and the rail cars are air conditioned.

IMO those that want to change 18C are correct. When three kids from QUT can be dragged thru the courts for three years and $250K + cost over silly Facebook posts - something is wrong!

Those who want to change 18C only seem to mention the first part, and ignore the rest of it about race, colour etc. Sorry but abuse because of someone's race is not acceptable. Don't call them a stupid pink $%#%^, just call them a stupid $%#%^. Those 3 idiots at QUT deserve all they get, everyone knows the reason for Oodgeroo Unit at QUT. The guy was clearly trying it on in using the facility. The long term generations of disadvantage for the people using the unit means it is not the place for petty political games. This is not segregation, the people using those facilities need all the help they can get.

Open disclosure - I had the privilege of tutoring for the Oodgeroo Unit when I was a postgraduate student.

I am a member of the pro-change group, and that is NOT my reason for objecting to a plebiscite. I outlined my reasons a few pages ago. The NO campaign is already trying to get the laws surrounding hate speech watered down or removed - why do you think that is? They aren't desiring it so they can talk about how gays are just like you and me, only gay. They are doing it so they can use words like f*gg*t and d*ke and call them perverts and unnatural. Now, you may very well think that in the privacy of your own mind, but can you not see how hurtful it would be for these people to be called names like that? Reinforcing ideas and feelings they have struggled against since realising they are not like everyone else in the (straight) world.

Survey after survey has shown that the majority of Australians favour marriage equality. Favours treating ALL our citizens the same. Telling them their love is no less of a thing than mine is. That the family they've built is no less valuable than yours or mine is.

I don't understand how any caring, compassionate person would be against that.

Please don't let us get into to the 'compassion' thing. 'Compassion' got a whole lot of people drowned.

The proposed changes to 18C will allow public debate to go ahead and not have members of the public being ruined for merely expressing an opinion which some-one decides has offended them. How can anyone defend 18C as it presently is when those poor uni kids are currently having their lives and careers ruined? I didn't see "f*gg*t and d*ke " amongst what they said on facebook!

BTW, when did "d*ke" become hate-speech or offensive? I remember the "d*kes on bikes" rumbling along Oxford Street in the Mardi Gras Parade, and not an asterisk in sight! See what I mean? The "d*kes on bikes" and the Gay Mardi Gras organisers could presumably be taken through the wringer because some-one thinks its offensive.

Its ludicrous, isn't it?

If the opinion polls are strongly in favour of Turnbull before the next election, should we skip it and save the money? :)

Edit: Ah. Now we see.

Labor insists that research suggests the plebiscite will fail if it is held.

Well, it seems that the Human Rights Commission need not investigate anything then. Its all obvious! :) "Everyone" knows .... But tThose students didn't say anything approaching "stupid pink $%#%^" or even , "stupid $%#%^", did they?

Just a pity that the HRC had their prosecution and action in train for almost a year before they actually told the students. Oops! Well, I guess it is the Human Rights Commission, after all. Secret investigations and prosecutions R Us.

Did anyone happen to see this report?
