Mr FM spent most of his first day on a trolley in Emergency when he had brain abscesses - I didn't mind though as I was just grateful he was being treated...

There is nothing like the feeling of relief when you are on that trolley and know that people around you are working to sort out the problem and get you better.

I was at a conference this week, and one of the sessions discussed gender diversity in various industries.

A woman gave an example: Her son had a female GP and female paediatrician and when he broke his arm was treated by a female orthopaedic surgeon. He turned to his mum and asked if boys could be doctors?

:)

In a similar vein, my niece who has a PhD took her 3 year old daughter to Hospital for tonsillectomy. Niece was allowed into Theatre donning the paper cap and sterilised gown. Daughter piped up - 'that's better Mummy, now you look like a real Doctor '

It's about getting the best use of points. Some don't see that.

I can save 360,000 points and book a return business class airfare to Thailand for myself, wife and daughter or I can book 4.5 returns in economy for wife and daughter and pay for economy airfare for myself to maintain status and ensure our trips are comfortable.

That to me is an efficient use of points as wife and daughter will more than likely go back to Thailand 3 times/year which means I need 6 trips. Just because an airline values a premium airfare at some obscene amount doesn't make it the best value. The best value is what I'm prepared to pay and I can do without a bigger seat for a few hours.

And realistically some people can take a long time to earn those types of points without business expenditure or churning credit cards. So yes a load of hogwash. It's all about the best value for the individual.

My reading of this is the JohnK is just expressing his opinion. Nothing more nothing less.
The interesting thing is other people make "sweeping" statements on other topics but are not called out for it.
Soory I really think some people don't like JohnK and will find any reason to put him down. Not right

I suppose I better also say The above comment is IMO before I get slammed for make it a sweeping statement

I think Flinders Medical Centre has different colours.
When I was training medical students had to wear different colour head coverings.

Today I had someone wear those disposable undies in preparation for an operation on his head. No one dared say anything. I suppose his ears could jut out where the legs should have gone.

Yes. I read a similar story about an older guy having a (therapeutic) massage. His wife didn't tell him....

Just paid $5000 to rebuild a blown up automatic transmission in a car that is worth $8000 redbook. Now it drives so smooth and also very smooth when idling. Additional part included replacing the engine mounts which were cracked.
Automatic transmissions have planetary gears - sun, planet, ring. The broken parts were the ring gears. We had no 1st gear nor reverse outside Michelago near Canberra on a Sunday night several weeks ago.

Had to either fix it or the car is worth nothing. Or get a cheap auto from the wreckers so it drives and then get rid of it?

An interesting read-
https://medium.com/@thefatshadow/wh...sitting-next-to-you-on-the-plane-85006e263778

This one is locked. So a couple of paragraphs-
The anxiety doesn’t subside once I buy a ticket — it distills, intensifying for weeks leading up to the flight. I think about how to eliminate every other stressor. Passengers hate it when someone takes too long loading their bag into the overhead compartments. I pay to check a bag, so that my fellow passengers won’t have any additional reasons to complain about me.
I practice how I will sit on the plane, pushing my body against the cabin wall, one arm holding the other firmly over my chest, so that I will make no physical contact with the person sitting next to me. I bring mints, so I won’t need anything to drink, so that the flight attendant won’t have to reach across the row for the fat person. I research whether the airports I’ll pass through have a history of confiscating seat belt extenders. If I bring my own, I’ll be spared the white hot spotlight of asking the flight attendant for one.

In that way, air travel is sadly familiar, a microcosm of what happens so often as a fat person. I am watched — and judged harshly — as I try — and fail — to fit into a space that was made for someone else. I am always too big, always too much, always unacceptable. I must make myself smaller and smaller, reducing and reducing endlessly, my stubborn body resisting at every turn. Still, I am never quite small enough to make anyone else comfortable.

Our Health Minister seems rather miffed that our new Hospital did not stop the ramping that occurred across Adelaide today.

Heard that Ambulances were being diverted from Footscray and Sunshine Hospital to Royal Melbourne today. Just drove past Footscray Hospital and saw nearly a dozen Ambulances waiting to offload patients.

I think it's fair to say value *can* be in the eye of the beholder. Value works at two levels... if 1,000,000 FF points could buy a brand new rolls Royce valued at $600k, or two toyotas valued at $20k each, the rolls Royce is factually the best value. But someone might need two cars, so the best personal value is to take the toyotas. But that doesn't mean they are factually the best value.

Warning: Opinion Ahead!

Well... no. The more precise conclusion is that the Rolls Royce is financially the best value.

There seems to be an inherent assumption that the concept of "value" only refers to the financial aspect. While in many cases this may be true, that doesn't equate to the idea of "value" as a proxy for "money" as a fact. It just so happens to be one of the most common metrics... and frankly today, it's rather unfortunate that many businesses consider it to be the only metric / dimension. There are several factors which should be considered in the value of a business (or business decision) that encompass much more than just financial return - some of those factors should be given either imperative or at least equal standing to the financial ones, and in many cases such factors are difficult or impossible to quantify, let alone be comparable.

So it is no "fact" that the Rolls Royce is the best value for points in your example; it is only so far as if you define "value" to mean financial value. And I won't even go down the rabbit hole of extending the financial angle by thinking about the long term effects of someone's situation in the view of 1 fancy car versus 2 not so fancy cars (e.g. loss of utility, cost of upkeep, risk of theft, etc.). And to claim that "value" can only be a fact if it is understood or de facto financial - I think we can all agree this is not reasonable.

Of course, just to throw back the devil's advocate... you could redeem the 1M points for the Rolls Royce, flog the Rolls Royce, buy the two Toyotas and pocket the difference!

All the same colour at the ones I work in
I see some wearing their scrubs outside the hospital catching the bus/train. Not a good look.
Given all the discussion on scrubs, I asked Dr FM if she still wears scrubs, she said definitely depending on the environment. Apparently whatever rotation she is doing at the moment means she doesn't have to, so is enjoying wearing normal clothes. Given her passion for fashion, I find it hard to believe she would ever wear her scrubs outside the hospital!
