Very interesting story. Your thought and hard work helped make a difference.
Yes. That’s it! Susan, the lady who smuggled him out of Cambodia must be beaming today.

On a more mundane note ... After a week in Iran, my main e-mail account has been suspended by Telstra for possible spamming. Skyped them and after a few queue prompts only then they say that area isn't open today.

Boy, its difficult to get anything printed at a hotel here.

I'm in the middle of selling a house and the printing and e-mail things aren't helping!

Hoping we will receive a tr for all these interesting destinations...

I pay to travel. As I mentioned earlier I wished someone had pushed me in my teens to become a pilot. The money is huge motivation. I'd be retired well before 40. But I'm still working on my way to 60.

Anyway once the AI singularity occurs it is all over for the human race anyway.
The Borg was an interesting concept. I look around me today and the Borg is becoming reality.

Yes humanity is doomed. That's the path we have chosen.

A good friend of mine is a pilot - trans Tasman flying a 777. He started flying as a teenager, building the hours etc

He turned 40 recently and rest assured he's a long way financally from being able to retire and he's good with money.

That is so true. Ron has been doing locums for 10 years now - all over Australia, anywhere from two weeks to 12 weeks, and he phones me twice a day !!
At least mine is only gone usually 3-4 nights per week. I get a brief call or text during the day, letting me know where to book his room for the night, (QF for the points) and then I call him and we talk during my drive home from work.

Poor cough probably lives in Melbourne or Sydney.

John,

Please go back and read the previous responses to your comment.

I know probably hundreds of pilots and not one of them was/is in a position to retire at 40 and in any case only a handful of them ever reach the really high paid jobs you are talking about. At the other end of the scale I know many who struggle to make just to make a decent living in General Aviation.

Why are they there then? Because they have a passion for aviation not just because they 'might' earn the big bucks. To even have a chance of earning those big bucks they needed, at some time or other, to have a passion for aviation. Also remember that in the military, for example, the pass rate is about 30% and of the other 70% some will have paid with their lives. (In the 15 months of my basic training one instructor and two students were killed.)

i.e. It's not as simple as saying I want to become a pilot.

We need to have a chat next time we meet and compare notes.

The pilot salaries I know about are at least double mine has ever been so not sure what they are doing wrong. I would also expect they have a much better superannuation plan than the rorting companies that manage my superannuation.

Do they expect the same income in retirement? I will be happy with half the income in retirement to what I'm earning now and I think I will have a comfortable life and still travel. My expectations are simple.

You have to remember, commercial pilots of a certain age have better arrangements and work place awards compared to younger pilots.

Also Certain Airlines like QF will pay more for ex military pilots (Higher Standard) compared to Ryan Air which would probably accept a sim certified pilot.

I know tour guides that earn huge amounts ..... I'd focus on attitude - not the profession.

I think that the longer I am away the more it is appreciated. But then nascence makes the heart grow fonder.

Watching the RL world cup today. An amusing moment in the Fiji Wales game where Fiji thrashed Wales.Over the PA came Tom Jones singing Delihah.Fiji scored a try when it came to the line-"She stood there laughing".

Or you might have insisted on learning only the technology that existed when you started out, and found that your employer didn't consider that wholly acceptable.

When it boils down to it, your whole attitude towards the profession just smacks of rudeness.

Won a couple of karaoke competitions with Delilah.
