So, how do people respond to emails like that?

Actually these days that could even be considered sexual harassment. Imagine if you'd drawn some kind of parallel to female anatomy. Hell would break loose. It isnt just one way although it currently seems that way.

Its not harassment as there is no victim, its not directed at an individual. If I used the C word, which I would never use, then there would be course to counsel me on using better words and communication, being appropriate. This is a single instance ever that I have used this term.

My boss responded that he will talk to head of IT and ask why its almost a week with no assistance/resolution.

It doesnt need to be directed at anyone. If someone reads it and is offended by it then it can be harassment.

As blackcat20 has responded, there does not need to be a particular victim. Using a generic 'gender' term is enough if used disparagingly. Confusion about 'who is the victim' is what is getting people into nasty situations these days. The men here might have found that offensive. Just as I would get a little bothered if someone here posted "silly women".

No. It can be offensive and warrant counselling but that doesnt make it harassment.

People need to get a fix on what exactly harassment is, its continued behaviour.

No it certainly doesn’t need to be repetitive. A ‘once off’ is enough. You might need a refix on that.

I'll take the counsel from our employment lawyers and HR, theres a difference between single offensive event and continued behaviour that is harassment. By continued, it could be 2 or more verbal or written incidences or actions in seconds that trips the trigger.

Dont get me wrong, both are bad.

The HRC should be ashamed of themselves-only using he or she.Surely that is insulting and demeaning to some.
Yes I have my tongue firmly implanted in my cheek. The world is-as one FTer's handle-Helena handbasket.

Reading the US papers a Congress staffer who has accused a politician of sexual harassment claims that many years ago she was wearing a short skirt and a passing pollie said-"nice legs."
Apparently she has suffered mental anguish ever since.

On the other hand it is to be applauded that some protected species of males are finally facing the music.

Like all things in life there is middle ground. The incident you describe about the legs to me demeans the claims of those who suffered more personal and actual physical contact.

Just talking about such things at a lunch yesterday with 50-something women. One woman in particular was describing some of the things they as schoolkids were asked to do as part of drama studies. That teacher was eventually charged a couple of years ago but not proven. When she was describing her lessons then it was pretty abhorrent what he had them all do. As a teen she was very uncomfortable with it but in those days you just kind of accepted it, as a grandmother now she still shudders about it.
