I fear the cashless society which is coming like it or not.It is behind the ideas of crypto currencies-I just dont think they are the answer in current form.
If the society becomes cashless your money is just a figure on a ledger. If the Government decides interest rates are going negative there is nothing you can do except spend it all.

Next year drron interest rates will probably rise if the world economy really gets going better. The US employment growth is a bit of a guide. I doubt that Australian interest rates will go negative in the next couple of years.

Be thankful! The restaurants we ate at in Tulum were all cash only.... that’s US$600 pointless dollars :(

But when the next crash comes as it must with world debt far higher than 2008 it is just possible rates will go negative.
I think that will happen by 2026 and I hope to still be alive.

Pushka, the fees on credit cards etc really aren't that high, esp with Amex pushing into small business so hard that 2.5% would be extremely high. But when you run it all yourself and get paid cash you might be making 20-30% more if you aren't the sort who believes that the Government need to pay for schools, police and roads somehow.

In a small business of say 1-2 people, then fees of around 1.5% minimum really bite. It’s just another slug for - well, nothing really Not all cash businesses rip off the tax payer btw. Our business receives money via Invoice and direct payment to bank so a non issue to us but the merchant fees and restrictions are pretty onerous with credit cards. Like banks keeping a reserve of your funds in case of customer returns. Only a couple of our customers ask to pay by credit card but we don’t run one. And reckon they’d be miffed if we said we would add a surcharge to their Invoice.

These balcony crashes resulting in loss of life are awful. Always a happy gathering or party when they occur due to overcrowding and potential lack of maintenance. Very sad.

I don’t understand why providers are going the ‘no cash’ route. Given bank charges on every transaction it doesn’t make sense. The only ones winning are the banks.

And I wish policiticians would put brain into action before opening their mouth. Idiots. All of ‘em.

I have to disagree. Cash has a massive cost to business, just they seem to accept it without question vs cards which generally have a low charge if you negotiate properly.

Fine. We can agree to disagree then.

Cash can be a massive hassle in retail - especially the down time to bank it, the need to maintain float, get change when running low, security risk, extra measures likes safes for secure keeping, handling and the hygiene when in food service, customers claiming they handed over one note but got change for another, staff theft, balancing the till....

Those costs actually tend to outweigh bank charges on card use.

I rarely use cash - maybe my morning coffee and the farmers markets.

I was astounded when I arrived here from NZ 14 years ago and so many places in Sydney did not have EFTPOS - the local cinema, many restaurants etc. It was so mainstream in NZ that you'd even pay for the Saturday paper ($1!) or a carton of milk on card without issue and certainly no surcharges.

Is this new, when posting a thread response?
