Would like to but leave for CAN on Sunday morning (27th). Will look at activities and see if there is something informal where I could tag along
Come for the drinks at least. I don't think those need bookings?

Yep, PJObrien's is a 'walk up' activity.

Not that it helps OzFest, but that will change in 6 weeks. :)

I was wondering about that, and how Victoria must be dragging the chain with these changes

That (the smoking laws in Vic) is one of the reasons I chose not to bother racing from the Airport to Hilton and then onto PJ O'Briens for the opening night festivities. By the time we'd get there (10pm), we'd be ready for a bit of shut eye anyway. Withe min LW in tow, I'm not willing to subject her to smoking at such a tender age.

Shano,

Be aware that PJ's can be quite smokey.
Good point Straitman, I was also thinking that the smoking laws had changed, but not as yet.

May be best to leave the better two thirds at home.

Not sure it is just Victoria. The changes do not come into effect in NSW until 1 July 2007!

The rest of the world is years behind. In some countries smoking is still permitted in restaurants. :(

Maybe the hospitality groups lobbying over there was stronger, suggesting that business would be devastated by not allowing smoking in pubs etc. Doesn't seem to have had much effect on business over here. If anything, the people that used to stay away because of the smoke now go out more as well.

I dont knwo about you oz_mark, but it irritated me every time I went over east and had to put up with smokers whilst eating. I was surprised it took them so long, its usually us lagging behind them

Been smoke-free in NZ for a while. Now if they'd only force smokers into the alley out the back instead of the footpath out the front. :(

That's the experience in NZ too. Lots of doom and gloom predicted by restaurants and bars before they went smokefree, but hasn't come to that.

Much the same. Quite amazing how much more pleasant it is to eat a meal without second hand smoke wafting across you. It was quite noticeabale the difference when I was in Melbourne earlier this year.

Trying not to get too on topic, but in the last two years, in what smoky restaurant were you eating a meal in Melbourne?

Can't remember which one it was, but was near some smokers, and as always, the smoke blew in my direction. Technically, I suppose they classed it as an outdoor area, as it was in one of those open (but with roof) areas, at the front of some of the restaurants.
