Well yes Joh was the premier of Queensland, unlike those other 2. Having experienced the tip of Joh's corruption in my life and hearing all the other stories about people who got much worse than my family; not hearing similar stories from friends/family in NSW and WA about those 2, I'd say Joh was very different. Perhaps get the 4 Corners anniversary app and watch "The Moonlight State".

As for 20 odd years, try 14 years and you might be close.

Up here in QLD the political press (both QLD & National) have referred to the ALP rule as being 20 odd years.....I have no regret in stating the same! Not too mentioned that it feels like 30+ years!

As for Joh and his years....well, I also lived in QLD throughout his period in office. Not sure why we are even talking about Joh & events from 20 + years ago.......I guess the result today is very painful for some;)

Oh they were premier were they and they set up a whole web of corruption through out multiple government departments? Or were they insolated people who were kicked out once caught. Seriously 21 years of absolute corruption through all levels of government and public life can not be compared to those 2 people. I'll wait for you to tell us our Joh did great things for Queensland. Yep, and his mates did well as well.

It's not having a majority in parliament that corrupts, it's being in power too long. The (now ex) Govt was in too long, and was morally corrupt - plus the extent of their other issues should slowly come out as the LNP tries to untangle the mess.

Perhaps you should try reading The Australian, and watching the ABC both have correctly quoted 14 years. I'd certainly love to see you quote any press that has said 20 odd years. No need to make it up.

Why are we talking about Joh and corruption? because some people are trying to pretend that Joh didn't rule over the most pervasively corruption government in the history of this country. People are trying to pretend that evil old fool didn't deliberately destroy lives, just to benefit the pockets of himself and his friends.

The only painful thing about this result is it isn't South Australia, 2 or 3 years ago. :p

Whatever! And let me guess Johannes wasn't in power too long, in your opinion. oh and his government wasn't morally corrupt either, in your opinion. :?:

I can see you take no joy in the result........just as well you don't live up here anymore:shock:

Can do for PM is just around the corner;)

AAP were using the phrase "nearly 20 years". Close enough?

Joh led a corrupt Government. He was booted out, and is very lucky he managed to escape prosecution. However, the same rot has managed to creep in again.

I don't know how you managed to mangle my view that much to determine that. Whether it's LNP or Labor - Terms longer than 6-9 years cause complacency and allow rot to set in. As examples hallmarking back to Joh days, the Police service is under scrutiny for exactly the same problems that the police had during the Joh era.

Yes we all know your views on right wing politicians. And it is ALP folklore how corrupt Joh was and how great Whitlam was.And of course you know all this from knowing those people.
Just remember it was Mike Ahern who set up the Fitzgerald inquiry. When I moved to QLD I got to know Mike Ahern and several of Joh's ministers.I doubt that the corruption you talk about was widespread through Government departments. The Police Force was found to be riddled with corruption.
Of course I grew up in NSW-believe me corruption was rife there as well-the police force and politicians on both sides.I remember well the Balmain welding Company and Wings Travel. And of course when the Anti-corruption watchdog was set up in NSW it was by Nick Greiner-and it has a lot more teeth than the body set up in QLD by the ALP.
And just to end when there is corruption by politicians it usually involves both sides-no one wants to lose a place at the table when the goodies are carved up.

Annaq has stepped down as leader and will quit Parliament on Friday. So By election for South Brisbane.
Will Andrew Fraser stand?

So more public money to be wasted. Perhaps Ms Bligh can contribute towards the cost of the by election!!!!

I am putting my money on that She will be off overseas heading to a cushy job thanks to Julia :p

If Bob Carr could get dusted off and get handed a job then Anna should have high hopes.

Hahaha - now they can all fit into any bog standard three door hatchback:mrgreen:

This could be a epic fail by the ALP if they then try and get Andrew Fraser in and then it becomes another seat for the LNP.

She only won South Brisbane by a small margin.

For a lot of the night the leadership of that electorate was changing.

She hasn't won anything yet with the seat undeclared at 69% counted, and Fraser has already said no, however I wold not be surprised if Kate Jones moves.

Wasn't that long ago that the hopelessly corrupt National/Country Party was thrown out in much the same fashion.
If we look back through Australian politics this happens quite a lot. Win with landslide victories and then removed with landslide losses.

Do remember that absolute power is highly corruptive and I truly hope QLD doesn't go back to those disgraceful days of when Joh ruled.
Good old Joh's legacy. Sad times for Queensland and I would say he is one of the main reasons Queensland is 20 years behind....

Not quite, it was the Labor party that removed the upper house in Queensland, even if it was nominated rather than elected, it would have provided some check and balance in subsequent years as it does elsewhere. At least its absence makes voting quick on election day.

This stuff really should be split off to another thread ...

.. there is a Joker in the pack with this election.

It's the amount of vote the Katter AP received - it seems to have made most predictions inaccurate and cost the defeated government more the the incoming.

Referring my mention of the rebate parties/candidates may get - it seems that Queensland have changed they way it's done, ensuring maximum return for established parties while stiffing anyone else.

Funding and Disclosure

$40K per seat won for "Registered Political Parties" (who have been around and won seats for at least the prior election).

52% of "Electoral Expenditure" for any candidate that garners at least 4% of the primary vote.

The Katter mob may well collect quite a substantial sum from the latter.
