The totally off-topic thread

A Currrent Affair on Ch9 tonight has a segment on Fly Buys & EDR & how it's not all it's cracked up to be. They clearly haven't spoken to the AFFer based in SA with a love of cat food & penchant for taco seasoning! :)

There's a huge "phobia" (or whatever) out there which basically says that purchasing points (or purchasing for the sole purpose of points) is a stupid idea, up there with acknowledging Scientology.

On top of that, ACA focuses highly on only Y fares (since they seem to be the "easiest" to get, i.e. need less points saved up to get them, they use less points than J or F, and most people wouldn't even think of J or F due to the cash price anyway) and families (viz. the common 2 adults and 2 kids, which probably means wheeling out the Y fares because even J or F for 2+2, though at identical rates with points, is still onerously difficult due to the absolute expense required, and the rate becomes less important than the absolute cost in this case).

Certainly, most of the dynamics we talk about here are mainly cater best to individual flyers and, to a lesser extent, couples.

I thought they just wanted something for nothing?

Once in a blue moon Fly Buys have a competition where you have a chance at winning one million Fly Buys points when you shop at 5 places eg Coles, K-Mart etc.

Other than that I've just been able to redeem points for a $25.00 gift card every now & then.

ozbeachbabe, do you know who the reporter is?

If I thought I'd get to marry Nicole Kidman or Katie Holmes or whoever, I'd take Scientology seriously.

Booked in B. Was thinking of getting an ODU, but I think I'll take my chances :)

Oh, there was some footballer at the next table during lunch today (Paddington in BNE), and I'm informed he has a statue nearby. No idea who he was, but the more sporting people at lunch did.

No Tracy Grimshaw just mentioned last night what was on tonight's program.

They showed some guy in a suit giving his 2c worth but I'm assuming he was some kind of consumer advocate.

Sir Walter Lewis, the Emperor of Lang Park, or Lockyer are the 2 main contenders.

I have just done a Google image search and indeed it was Darren Lockyer.

I'd recognise Wally Lewis (despite not being a sports fan) and it wasn't him :)

Perhaps ;) Saying that <science or engineering hat on, mostly guessing and conjecture>, the change in perception is a combination of humidity change as well as oxygen concentration (partial pressure / ambient pressure) (thus also affecting the functions of the body). These two factors change dramatically due to the aircraft environment (very low humidity, as well as at 8,000 ft that is just about the threshold where most people will still be relatively comfortable with the level of oxygen / pressure).

Of course, at 39,000 ft this will also change your perceptions. You won't feel a thing at all (literally) :o. So yes, guilty as charged. Q.E.D. :)

Thanks for that - I may have some understanding of physiology.... ;)

Way to take a tongue in cheek comment and suck the life out of it.:p

Well I wouldn't know if an op up was going to happen.

I've just bumped myself and colleague to a later flight. No charge of course, but it means that we've lost 23J/K.

As a fellow scientist (somewhere down the line; OK you doctor, me engineer) I thought you might've taken some more humour out of it. Even in a Sheldon Cooper-esque kind of manner. :p

23J to 36F. I most certainly will be trying for an ODU.

Awesome story on the news about the Chinese 4th helicopter regiment. Apparently, they can fly in "any" weather. I suppose he didn't say how long or far they could fly.

For those two, you'd have better luck being a Catholic - at least to become their final rather than first husband. ;)

Weii I learned from the ACA story that all I need to do to get a $40 toaster is spend $14K on groceries at Coles!

Pity they don't even mention points you can earn from the Woollies EDR MC or NAB credit card for Fly Buys.

Most people do not have the time, understanding, patience and simply do not care about all these loyalty programs. If they decide to go on holidays it will be a last minute research and try and purchase the cheapest flights.

A friend who died recently went to Greece every year for ~7 weeks and bought the cheapest economy airfares possible to get there. I tried to explain all these ways that he could get there in business and he said simply "I do not care about any of those schemes. I can handle ~24 hours in economy and love the travel experience." Although he was a member of Krisflyer he did not want to play "their game" and would let points expire.

And here I am running around all over the place researching ways of getting to Thailand in highly overrated business class products for ~$1,700 when all I really need is an economy class airfare <$1,000 and sit in the comforts of a Qantas aircraft in 80AK, 40CDG or even 23BJ and in the process accumulate easy QFF points for my next round the world.

It is all relative....
