The totally off-topic thread

Must be why I rarely get an infection. However I use scotch as a prophylactic - prevention is better than cure.

Interesting that using alcohol as a prophylactic sometimes means people forget the prophylactic required when engaging in other activities. ;)

I drove to work in Melbourne today (shock horror).

There was an accident on Canterbury Rd, it looked like some poor chap wrote off his 911 Turbo (997 series). Not a cheap car to have a bingle in. I wanted to take a photo, but it wasn't safe to do so given I was driving.

I will be in Adelaide from late Monday night thru to Thursday afternoon and was pleased to be able to stay at West Lakes Resort this time seeing it is close to work. If the RAA office is still open in the West Lakes Shopping Centre I may try to do a Shintaro10x with Woolies gift cards.

Just don't take my Quota please... & Say hello to the girls for me, they do a great job at keying in all those numbers on multiple wish cards

A friend of mine just posted this one Facebook…A Teacher Tries To Avoid Drama, But A Jerky Question Sets Him Off
even if society thinks you just wanted to stay in school so you didn't have to grow up and "get a real job", parents think your useless, the government thinks your overpaid and dispensable and the kids will try to get you fired at every turn, I have heard teaching kids is hugely rewarding.
I was studying to be a high school maths teacher and stopped when I thought about the kind of attitude I would have to deal with each day and decided it wasn't worth it (especially given every single early childhood student teacher in my education classes hated (and would pass that hatred on) and didn't understand maths, trying to teach out someone else's phobia seemed… well I stopped studying).
I love teaching (adults). Its great to see people shine or learn a new skill.
My issue with this comic is he made his point, he didn't need to belittle the other person. Why put that in. Isn't that just bullying and he's undone everything he said at the start. Is it just me.
I know its a comic, but I've seen it before and it gets so many likes and comments about how teachers have a lot thrown at them from a seemingly ungrateful society, you can defend yourself without becoming a jerk yourself. Lawyers are also needed in society. I am not talking about petty civil law suits stuff, and I think most lawyers don't do that and didn't envisage doing that when they studied. I think they did it to help people or bring justice or both. Getting money from an inheritance, doing up the will, making sure your affairs are in order, helping someone who's life hinges on bankruptcy without this or that being paid to them (to which they are entitled for what ever reason), defending someones son or daughter who is wrongfully accused of a crime. Some people are motivated by money, some by holidays, some by being better than others, some by helping people.
The last picture was not needed and without it I think it is a much more powerful message.
Am I the only one?

shellthom - I think the whole comic shouldn't be in the context of an angry outburst... Now we all know teachers aren't paid that well, but it would be fairly remiss of other dinner party guests to rub it in like that.

I think teaching as a profession is undervalued and poorly regulated in our society.

From my own experience I can say that there are some fantastic teachers out there, but at the same time there are a lot of rubbish teachers.

As per my earlier post, education is a strange beast!

Yes the whole angry context was… but the last line for me is the clincher. He was educating the guests as to what teachers do daily. And while I read the text and mostly ignored the picture context, most of the points were quite true as far as things they do that people overlook. The last line in my mind goes against everything a teacher is meant to stand for because I can't ignore it as I could the pictures. I read only the text, was moved, then disappointed, reading the text in the context of the pictures is while understandable disappointing from the start. If he is a good educator he shouldn't have had to be aggressive or passive aggressive to get his point across to a peer. I would have though rational discussion or any of the points he made about how he makes a different, inspires, pushes, supports, advocates let alone educates the youth to be tomorrows leaders was enough. sigh. I just don't like people advocating bullying in any form. I am glad you understand.

Hey I layer as well. It is all about reading your own body, but sometimes if you cop a virus there is nothing you can do about it, despite how well you clothe yourself but it does not help if idiot co-workers come in if sick.
Agreed you can't do much about airborne viruses.

My theory of keeping warm works for me. Not bad though for someone with immune system issues.

Our favourite sight this financial year was a "Barclay's blue hire bike" sitting up on a balcony of a flat in London. Clearly it was stolen but where will it fit......ah ... the balcony will do.

There was someone who printed blue stickers with a 4 letter word in exactly the same font and went around sticking them onto those bicycles... let me see if I can find a pic

I'll be in ADL as well on Thursday (presume you mean 4 July) - arrive at 8.20am. Perhaps you, me and Shintaro10x should get together and you can extoll the virtues of RAA/RAC(Q) Woolies Gift cards.

Sounds like a meeting at an RAA office at West Lakes on Thursday. I am unsure whether my life Gold Member RACWA card will work there so we may need Shintaro10x to cut thru some red tape.

Same prophylactic for them too. I thought you were into vodka. Maybe its the vodka preventing infection, rather than the extra layers.

Extra layers of clothing aren't going to help bacterial inections. The ice in the glass drinking alcohol has been the cause of my many bacterial infections in recent years.

Can't win them all. :(
